Overview

The search happens at 11pm, on a phone, with the dog in the back seat

Someone types "emergency vet near me open now" and reads about one screen before deciding. They need four things in that screen: whether you are open at this hour tonight, whether you take the species in the carrier, a phone number their thumb can hit, and some sense of what walking through the door will cost. Hours buried in a footer graphic, a holiday schedule nobody updated, or a contact form where a phone number should be, and they are already driving to the hospital that answered the question. That is why local SEO for an animal hospital is less about keywords than about whether your open hours, species list and phone number are correct and visible in the exact places an owner checks in a panic.

The daytime version of the problem is different but just as specific. Plenty of general practices are booked weeks out or closed to new clients entirely, so the honest job of the site is to say so, name the waitlist, and tell people where to go after hours instead of letting them find out by calling. Meanwhile a second audience is shopping calmly for boarding over Thanksgiving, a groomer who can handle a matted doodle, or a trainer for a reactive rescue, and those buyers want vaccine requirements, drop-off windows, staff-to-dog ratios and photographs of the actual runs before they will fill anything in.

And a third audience never books at all. Pet product brands lose their own branded search to marketplaces, get compared on price against an autoship subscription, and still have to keep every claim inside what the label law allows. One website often has to serve all three: the emergency, the appointment, and the cart.

What makes this hard

What makes pets and veterinary different

Owners treat animals like family and pay out of pocket for nearly all of it, which makes urgency and cost the two forces behind almost every search in this category. The practical consequences show up in places that generic local marketing never touches, starting with how a hospital profile is set up. Getting the profile right for a 24-hour hospital is a different job than it is for a nine-to-five clinic.

"Open now" is the entire query

Emergency and urgent care searches filter on hours before anything else, so special hours for Thanksgiving, July 4 and the winter holidays matter more than any page you write. If "24 hours" actually means an overnight answering service that routes to a referral hospital, the site and the profile need to say which, because an owner who drives to a locked door leaves a review about it.

Booking is split across four vendors

The schedule lives in Cornerstone, AVImark, ezyVet, Shepherd or Pulse; requests arrive through PetDesk, Vetstoria, Weave or a form that just emails the front desk; boarding and grooming run on a separate calendar such as Gingr or Time To Pet; and the pharmacy sits on a Vetsource or Covetrus storefront on another domain. The website is the only place a client sees all of that as one business.

💊

The refill quietly leaves for Chewy

Heartworm, flea and tick preventives and chronic-condition refills are recurring revenue that walks out the moment an owner cannot find your home-delivery pharmacy in two clicks and searches instead. Prescription authorization requests then arrive by fax from a competitor, and the practice pays staff time to hand the sale away.

🦎

Species is a filter nobody publishes

"Exotic vet near me," "avian vet," "reptile vet" and "cat only clinic" are high-intent searches with thin local supply, and owners of rabbits, birds, bearded dragons and ferrets are used to being turned away by phone. Saying plainly which species you see, which you do not, and whether you are a Cat Friendly Practice or a Fear Free hospital answers a question most sites make people call to ask.

⚖️

Boards, diplomates and label law

State veterinary boards regulate practice advertising, board-certified specialist claims belong to diplomates of ABVS-recognized colleges, and telehealth is limited by whether a valid veterinary-client-patient relationship exists in that state. On the product side, a topical flea and tick pesticide answers to EPA, an ingestible answers to FDA, and a food or treat carries AAFCO label obligations, which puts brands under the same kind of claim discipline we work with in food and beverage.

💔

Reviews land on the worst day of someone's life

The one-star reviews in this category cluster around euthanasia, an emergency estimate and a case that did not end well, and grief and invoices are not arguments you can win in public. Responses have to acknowledge the loss, stay off the medical record, and move the conversation to a practice manager, which is a different template than the one a groomer needs for a bad haircut.

How we work

How we build these sites

We structure the site around the moments that actually drive a visit rather than a services dropdown. Emergency and urgent care, wellness plans and puppy or kitten packages, spay and neuter, anesthetic dental with pre-anesthetic bloodwork explained, surgery, diagnostic imaging, senior care and quality-of-life assessment, end-of-life and in-home euthanasia with cremation options, plus a real page for whichever species you accept. Cost gets addressed rather than deflected: how estimates work, what a deposit covers, that most pet insurance reimburses the owner after they pay rather than billing you directly, which carriers offer direct pay, and whether you take CareCredit or Scratchpay.

Then we make the handoffs survivable. The site becomes the front door to whatever you already run, so an appointment request reaches the right queue, boarding and grooming route to their own booking tool with the vaccine requirements stated before the form, refill requests go to your own pharmacy instead of a search engine, and the online store or home-delivery pharmacy is built to feel like part of the hospital rather than a bounce to a stranger's domain. For product brands that sell direct, that is a full ecommerce build: subscriptions that compete with autoship, size and weight-band selection, ingredient and sourcing pages, a stockist and retailer locator, and shipping rules that account for perishable or restricted items.

The rest is discipline about content and records. Intake forms should not be collecting clinical history that belongs in your practice software, photography should show your exam rooms, your kennels and your team rather than stock retrievers, doctor bios should carry credentials and species interests and stay editable as associates change, and multi-location groups get a real page, profile and set of hours per hospital instead of one page with a location dropdown.

The process

How the engagement runs

A hospital at capacity and a brand fighting for its own branded search need opposite things, so we start with which one you are.

1

Find out what you are short of

Emergency volume, new clients, dentals and surgeries, boarding occupancy over the holidays, or cart revenue. That decides what gets built first, and whether the site should be recruiting clients or filtering them.

2

Audit the client journey you already have

We follow a real appointment request, a refill and a boarding booking end to end, and note every place the trail crosses a vendor, dies in an inbox or asks somebody to call during business hours.

3

Map the area and the species

Which hospitals near you are corporate-owned and heavily marketed, who takes exotics, who is open overnight, who is closed to new clients, and which questions owners in your area are searching that nobody local has answered.

4

Build and connect

Design and content first, then the wiring: booking, forms, pharmacy, store, call handling and reviews, set up so your front desk keeps using the software it already knows.

5

Run it against the calendar

Heartworm and flea and tick season, kitten and puppy season, holiday boarding filling months out, July 4 lost-pet and noise anxiety traffic, and Halloween and Thanksgiving toxicity calls are all predictable. We plan content, hours and profile updates ahead of them instead of reacting.

FAQ

Questions pet businesses ask us

We are already booked out and not accepting new clients. Why would we invest in the website?
Because the site is doing damage right now if it does not say so. Owners are calling, waiting on hold and getting turned away, which costs your team hours and produces reviews. A site that states your new-client status, names your waitlist and referral hospitals, and points existing clients at refills, records and self-service reduces phone volume. It also means that when you add a doctor and reopen, you are not starting from nothing.
Can the website actually connect to our practice management software?
It depends on the system and what your client communication vendor exposes. Some setups support real-time online scheduling against live openings, others only support a structured request that lands in a queue for the front desk to confirm. We find out which one you have before we design the booking flow, and if the honest answer is a request rather than instant booking, we make the site set that expectation instead of implying a confirmed appointment.
How do we stop losing refills and preventives to online retailers?
Make your own pharmacy the easiest path from every page a client is already on. That means the refill link in the main navigation rather than buried in a client portal, the home-delivery store presented under your branding, autoship offered on preventives, and reminder emails that link straight to your cart. You will not beat a marketplace on price alone, so the argument the site should make is authorization, correct dosing by weight, manufacturer guarantees and the fact that your team already has the record.
Should we publish prices for things like euthanasia, spays and emergency exams?
At minimum publish an exam fee and explain how estimates work, because those calls are consuming your phones and the alternative is that owners assume the worst. End-of-life is the page where this matters most: what happens during the appointment, whether you offer in-home visits, cremation and memorial options, and payment expectations. Written calmly and in advance, it spares a grieving client from asking, and it is often the most read page on a veterinary site.
We make pet food and supplements. Can our own site compete with the big marketplaces?
Not on price or delivery speed, so the site has to win on the things a marketplace listing cannot carry: sourcing and formulation detail, feeding guidance by weight and life stage, veterinary review of the content, subscription terms better than autoship, and a stockist locator for owners who prefer to buy in person. The same product-page and subscription mechanics we use across ecommerce apply, with the added constraint that label and health claims for animal food and supplements are regulated and cannot be written like human wellness copy.
Do you only build for veterinary practices?
No. Pets and veterinary is one of the verticals we work in, and the rest are on our industries page. What transfers from other categories is local search, booking and store mechanics. What is specific here is emergency intent, species filtering, board advertising rules, the pharmacy relationship and a client base that pays for everything out of pocket.
