What is Stellar Roofing Company?

Stellar Roofing Company is a West Michigan roofing contractor with an office in Kentwood, just south of Grand Rapids. It works on houses and on commercial, multi-family and industrial buildings, and covers the whole life of a roof: inspection, repair, maintenance, full replacement and new construction. It describes itself as "100% West Michigan owned."

The company's own history, from its About page: founder Paul Aikens started in roofing in 2006 under an experienced roofer, went out on his own in 2012, and for several years worked mainly as the crew that builders, general contractors and other roofing companies hired to do their roofs. In 2016 it began working directly with homeowners and building owners under its own name. The company says that after 2020 it put much more weight on roof repair, offering homeowners who had been quoted a full replacement the option of repairing only the damaged area.

The company gives these volume figures: 5,600+ roofing projects in West Michigan since 2012, made up of 4,000+ homes and 1,600+ businesses. It also says Paul Aikens has personally completed 6,000+ roofing projects since 2006, counting the years before and during Stellar. These are the company's own numbers.

Two themes run through the whole site. First, it says the people who inspect a roof are the people who fix it, rather than a separate sales team. Second, it argues for paying once for a complete roof system instead of choosing the lowest bid, and it says plainly that it is "not built for" buyers collecting many quotes to find the cheapest one.

Who owns and runs Stellar Roofing Company?

The site names seven team members, each with a bio page:

NameRole (as published)Credentials the site lists
Paul AikensFounder & OwnerMichigan Licensed Residential Builder; GAF, CertainTeed and Mule-Hide certified
Anders RasmussenHead of Operations, Lead Inspector (a partner in the company)HAAG Certified Inspector (Residential); GAF, CertainTeed, Mule-Hide, Metal Sales; OSHA 30-Hour; Michigan salesperson license; B.S. Business Administration, Liberty University
Alyssa RasmussenHead of AdministrationNot listed

Ralph Simon SalazarSenior Roofing TechnicianBio on the site
Jassar ReyesHead ForemanBio on the site
Ashton RasmussenRoofing Technician ApprenticeBio on the site

Paul Aikens is the owner and still works on roofs himself; his bio says he does "a couple dozen jobs a year." Anders Rasmussen joined in 2024 and runs operations, the inspectors and estimators. The company is careful to say that Haag certification is held by the two inspectors in their own names: Anders Rasmussen for residential roofs and Mihles Pena for commercial roofs. Haag is a credential for individual inspectors, not a company certification.

Is Stellar Roofing Company legit?

Here is what can be checked:

  • A real office and phone line. The site publishes a street address (4540 E Paris Ave SE Ste A, Kentwood, MI 49512), a phone number, (616) 840-1927, and an email address on every page.
  • Better Business Bureau. The company's BBB profile, checked on 19 October 2026, shows it as a BBB Accredited Business since 28 February 2025 with an A+ rating. BBB lists the business as an LLC that started on 23 August 2012, with Paul M Aikens as President, and an alternate name, Stellar Roof Repair, LLC. The profile's data showed no complaints filed in the last three years.
  • A state builder's license. The site lists a Michigan Residential Builder license issued by LARA, number 262000779. You can look it up yourself on the State of Michigan's license search. A license record may show a different legal name from the brand (BBB, for example, also lists Stellar Roof Repair, LLC).
  • Named people. Seven team members are named with photos, roles and credential lists, and the owner signs the cost pages with his license number.
  • Insurance. The company says it carries workers' compensation on all employees, general liability, and coverage on its vehicles, tools and equipment, and office and shop. Ask for a certificate of insurance before work starts; the company itself tells customers to do this with any roofer.
  • Published reviews. The site says it is "rated 5.0 from 165 Google reviews" and reproduces the written ones on its reviews page. Those figures are as shown on the company's site.
  • A gallery of priced jobs. Its project gallery shows real jobs with photos, the time on the roof and what it cost, rather than stock images.

The company says it also handles overlapping trades on a roofing job, such as siding, gutters, fascia and framing, because it is a licensed builder. It installs architectural and designer asphalt shingles from GAF and CertainTeed, and standing-seam and panel metal from Metal Sales and Central States. Its site says it does not install three-tab shingles, and that it does not lay a new roof over an old one ("we never overlay").

Roof repair, in detail

Repair is the service Stellar puts first. Its repair page lists these specific jobs:

  • Leak repair: tracing water to its real entry point (and any second source), water-testing where needed, fixing it and checking it is dry.
  • Flashing repair: chimneys, walls, valleys, skylights and pipe boots, rebuilt as a system with kick-out flashing at walls and counter flashing cut into masonry.
  • Missing shingles: replacing and color-matching shingles, and checking why they came off.
  • Skylight repair: sorting leaks from condensation, rebuilding flashing or replacing the skylight, and fixing interior trim while the ceiling is open.
  • Wind and hail damage: inspection by a Haag Certified inspector with test squares and claim documentation.
  • Flat roof repair: ponding, failed seams and blisters on TPO, EPDM and modified bitumen.
  • Structural repair: sagging rooflines, rotted decking, sistering rafters and reframing sections.

It repairs asphalt shingle (architectural and three-tab), standing-seam and panel metal, TPO, EPDM, modified bitumen and coated roofs. On how it decides between repair and replacement, the site says repair usually fits when damage is limited to one area, the deck is sound, the roof has life left and there is one layer of shingles. Replacement usually fits when the roof is 20 or more years old and worn across slopes, leaks keep appearing in new places, there are two layers, or the deck is bad in more than one area. For some problems it offers two options side by side: a smaller fix with realistic expectations, and a fuller repair of the root cause with a stronger warranty.

Roof replacement and new installation

Every replacement is a full tear-off to the bare deck. The company lists what a complete replacement includes:

  • Tear-off and disposal of every old layer, then replacement of any soft or rotted decking
  • Synthetic underlayment, and ice and water shield at eaves, valleys and penetrations, run past where ice dams form
  • Starter strip and ridge cap; new drip edge; all new step and counter flashing, with kick-out flashing at every wall
  • Ridge and intake ventilation sized to the attic
  • Six nails per shingle, hand-sealed in cold weather
  • Permit, cleanup, magnetic nail sweep and permit close-out
  • The manufacturer's enhanced warranty registered for you, plus a written workmanship warranty

Materials. Architectural asphalt shingles (GAF and CertainTeed) are what the company calls the best value for most West Michigan homes, rated 20 to 30 years. Standing-seam metal from Metal Sales and Central States, in 24-gauge steel with a Kynar 500 finish, is the premium option the company quotes at 40 to 70 years; it recommends standing seam over exposed-fastener panels on houses and keeps exposed-fastener panels for barns and outbuildings. For flat sections on a house (porches, additions, dormers), its first choice is modified bitumen, because the granulated cap sheet can usually be matched to the shingles. The site also has pages on tile, slate and cedar shake.

New installation covers new construction, additions and commercial new builds. The company says it prefers to be involved before the trusses are set, and it offers roof design and consultation to architects, builders and general contractors.

Commercial and flat roofing

On the commercial side, Stellar works with property owners, managers and developers on offices, retail centers, industrial buildings, warehouses, apartment complexes, restaurants, churches and schools. Its published systems and typical service lives:

SystemWhat the company says about it
EPDM (rubber)Long the most common flat roof in West Michigan; dark surface helps shed snow; 20 to 30 years
TPOWhite, reflective, heat-welded seams; typically costs less than EPDM
Modified bitumenMulti-layer, self-adhered or torch-applied; good with many curbs and penetrations; 15 to 25 years
Recover ("reskin")A new approved membrane over the old one when the deck is sound and there is one dry existing layer
Silicone and acrylic coatingsAdds roughly 10 to 20 years to a sound flat or metal roof; moisture survey and adhesion test first
Tapered insulationBuilds drainage slope into roofs that pond water; designed in-house

The company recommends twice-a-year inspections for commercial roofs, with a written report, and notes that most manufacturer warranties require documented periodic inspection. It also says it can finance commercial roofs (see financing).

Storm damage and insurance claims

After hail or wind, the company inspects the roof, documents damage with photos and a written report, and supports the insurance claim. Its storm inspections are done by its two Haag Certified inspectors: Anders Rasmussen for residential roofs and Mihles Pena for commercial ones.

The company is clear about what a roofer can and cannot do. Its insurance page says that under Michigan law a roofing company cannot negotiate a claim or interpret your policy; only a licensed adjuster can. What it says it does is inspect, write a full scope of what the roof needs to code and manufacturer spec, submit that documentation to your carrier on your behalf, and meet your adjuster on the roof. For large disputes it points homeowners to a licensed public adjuster or an attorney, and to Michigan's Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) for complaints.

Its suggested order of steps is: document the storm, get an inspection before calling the carrier, file promptly within your policy's deadline, ask for the roofer to be present at the adjuster's visit, read the written scope, and don't sign anything you don't understand. The site also notes that Michigan doesn't allow a roofer to waive or pay your deductible. This guide is not insurance or legal advice; for questions about your own policy, talk to your agent, a licensed adjuster or an attorney.

Emergency repair and winter snow removal

Emergencies. The company says its phone is watched around the clock: call or text (616) 840-1927, and leave a message or text if it goes to voicemail. For a true emergency it says it usually gets out within 24 hours, as long as the weather allows and the roof is safe to access. It tarps or otherwise stabilizes the roof, then returns for the permanent repair. Its FAQ says emergency work is priced at a premium, "typically starting around $850." For an active leak, it asks people to skip the web form and call.

Roof snow and ice removal. In winter the company removes snow and ice from roofs (and only roofs) across its service area. Its general rule for when to clear a roof is when all three are true: roughly 6 to 8 inches has built up, the two-week forecast stays below 35 degrees, and more snow is coming. It cautions against chipping ice, using salt or climbing an icy roof, and notes that tile roofs can't be cleared the same way because tiles crack underfoot. It describes snow removal as a way through the winter, not a permanent fix; the lasting fix for ice dams is attic air sealing, insulation and balanced ventilation. Snow removal pricing is not published.

How much does Stellar Roofing Company cost?

Stellar publishes more pricing than most roofers. These are the figures on its site when we checked on 19 October 2026. Its terms describe them as planning ranges, not binding quotes; the final price comes in writing after an on-site inspection.

WorkPublished priceNotes
Inspection or estimateFreeNo obligation; written, with photos
Minimum repair$500Every repair starts here
Minor repair$500 to about $1,500Pipe boot, a few shingles, a section of flashing; a few hours to half a day
Moderate repairAbout $1,500 to $4,000Most chimney re-flashes, valleys; usually a full day
Skylight replacement$2,000 to $3,000 per skylightFrom the repair cost page
Major repair$4,000 and upStructural work, rebuilt sections; a large fieldstone chimney can reach $6,000 to $7,000
Emergency workTypically from around $850From the FAQ
Asphalt shingle replacementAbout $500 to $1,000+ per square ($5 to $10+ per sq ft)Full tear-off and complete system
Standing-seam metalFrom about $12 per sq ft; can exceed $25 to $30Three to five times asphalt
Residential flat sections (modified bitumen)$6.25 to $12 per sq ftPorches, additions, dormers
Commercial flat roofsAbout $6 to $12 per sq ftTPO about $6 to $10, EPDM $6.50 to $11, modified bitumen $6.25 to $12
Coatings and restoration$2.50 to $8 per sq ftTapered insulation adds $2 to $4 per sq ft where needed

Worked examples from the site. For a 2,000-square-foot house, the replacement cost page gives three cases: a simple single-story ranch with a 4/12 pitch (about 22 squares) at roughly $12,000 to $16,000 in architectural shingles; a steeper two-story colonial with dormers, a chimney and a skylight (about 28 squares) at roughly $18,000 to $26,000; and the same colonial in standing-seam metal at $34,000 to $70,000. Those ranges exclude significant deck or structural repair.

Real jobs from its gallery, as the company lists them: a pipe boot replacement for about $500; chimney flashing plus three pipe boots for about $1,600 in three hours; a two-sided valley leak repair for about $3,000; a skylight replacement with interior trim for about $3,800; a hip section rebuild with new framing and ventilation for about $2,600; and a full tear-off and rebuild of a residential EPDM flat roof for about $10,800.

What moves the price, according to the company: roof size in squares (not the home's floor area), pitch and complexity, the material, the number of old layers, rotted decking, code items such as ice and water shield and ventilation, and other trades like siding and gutters. It says steep roofs (8/12 and up) often add 10 to 25 percent more labor per square. Rotted decking found at tear-off is either priced as an allowance up front or approved by you, with photos, before it is replaced.

Snow removal, maintenance plans and the online quote tool don't have published prices. Ask when you call.

Financing and payment

The company says it offers financing on everything from a small repair to a full replacement, residential and commercial, through several lenders that cover different credit situations. You apply at the estimate, and it says most decisions come back the same day. Storm-claim customers can use financing for the deductible or for any gap between the claim and the full job. The company says commercial financing is available for repairs, coatings, recovers and replacements.

It does not publish rates, payment amounts or lender names. Its financing page says approval amounts and terms are set by the lender, not by Stellar, and depend on your credit. Accepted payment methods (card, check and so on) are not listed on the site, so ask when you schedule.

Warranties

The company keeps two kinds of coverage separate, and its warranty page stresses that none of it is automatic: what you qualify for depends on the system, the products and the building, and your actual terms are written on your proposal.

  • GAF (residential). As a GAF Certified Plus contractor, the company says it can register System Plus and Silver Pledge. Under GAF's terms revised 1 July 2026, as the page summarizes them: lifetime limited coverage on manufacturing defects with 50 years non-prorated, covering material, labor, tear-off and disposal on covered repairs. Silver Pledge adds misapplication coverage (10 years on Timberline NS and HDZ; 15 years on UHDZ, AS II and Designer). Three-tab shingles are no longer eligible for either.
  • CertainTeed (residential). As a CertainTeed ShingleMaster, it says it can register SureStart PLUS 3-Star on qualifying Integrity Roof System jobs, which adds 10 years of 100% non-prorated labor and material coverage and is transferable to a new owner. The company says it will give you the exact transfer terms in writing.
  • Commercial. GAF Emerald Pledge on qualifying silicone coating systems (10, 15 or 20 year terms, set by the building's specification) and Mule-Hide TPO system warranties up to 20 years.
  • Stellar craftsmanship warranty. Written per project. The warranty page says it ranges from 5 to 10 years in practice, and up to 20 years on qualifying full replacements and repairs. Your term is stated on your proposal.

What happens step by step

  1. You reach out. Call or text, send the web form, or use the instant online quote. The company says it replies the same business day and usually schedules a visit within a few days in the Grand Rapids metro, sooner for an active leak.
  2. Satellite measurement. The roof is measured by satellite before anyone arrives.
  3. On-site inspection. An inspector checks the roof covering, flashing, valleys, vents, skylights, layers, deck, gutters and, where possible, the attic's insulation and ventilation. Everything is recorded on an inspection sheet with photos. You don't have to be home. A virtual inspection by video call is also offered.
  4. Written, itemized estimate. Line-by-line pricing (materials, labor, tear-off, disposal, permit, warranty), with repair and replacement side by side where both apply, and a summary at the top written for your roof.
  5. You decide. The company says there is no obligation and no follow-up campaign.
  6. Preparation. Landscaping tarped, A/C covered, plywood against siding, dumpsters staged.
  7. Tear-off and installation. Every layer to the deck, soft decking replaced (as agreed in advance), then the full system installed, with project management checking the work.
  8. Close-out. Magnetic sweep, haul-off, permit close-out, a final walk with you, and warranty registration.

How it compares with other options

OptionWhat you typically getTypical trade-off
Stellar Roofing CompanyFree written inspection, published price ranges, in-house crews, repair or replacement, manufacturer-registered warranties, storm documentationSays plainly it is not built for lowest-bid shoppers; $500 minimum on any repair
A large regional or national roofing chainBig crews, often a sales rep and a separate install crewThe person who quotes may not be the person who does the work; repair work may be less of a focus
Out-of-town storm crewFast availability after a big stormMay not be around later for warranty work; check license, address and reviews
Handyman or general contractorLow cost for small patchesOften caulk-based fixes; no manufacturer warranty registration
Home inspectorA general look at the roof as part of a home purchaseUsually from a ladder or drone; no repair pricing

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

A good fit if you…

  • Live or own a building in one of its 12 Michigan counties
  • Want a straight repair-or-replace answer, in writing, with photos
  • Want published price ranges before anyone visits
  • Have storm damage and want detailed documentation for your insurer
  • Own or manage a commercial flat roof and want maintenance, a coating or a recover
  • Need help in winter with ice dams or a heavy snow load

Look elsewhere if you…

  • Want the lowest possible bid: the company says that is not who it is built for
  • Need a very small fix for less than $500
  • Want an overlay (a new layer over old shingles): it only does full tear-offs
  • Want three-tab shingles on a new roof
  • Are outside its listed counties
  • Need someone to negotiate your insurance claim: that is a public adjuster's or attorney's job

Questions to ask before you hire

  1. Which warranty tier, manufacturer and craftsmanship, will my roof qualify for, and how long is the craftsmanship term on my job?
  2. How will rotted decking be handled: an allowance in the price, or approval with photos before it is replaced?
  3. Who will inspect my roof, and who will be the foreman on site?
  4. Can I see your certificate of insurance and your builder's license record?
  5. For a storm job: will your inspector be at the adjuster's visit?
  6. Which lenders do you use, and how do I see their rates and terms before I sign?
  7. If I'm in Northern Michigan, how is scheduling handled from the Kentwood office?

How to get started

  1. For an active leak, call or text (616) 840-1927 right away rather than using a form.
  2. For a price, use the free estimate form or the instant roof quote tool.
  3. For a condition check after a storm, before a home sale or for peace of mind, schedule a free inspection.
  4. Read the roofing cost guide and the warranty page before your visit.
  5. Email info@roofstellar.com with general questions.
