Headless CMS in one minute

A traditional CMS like classic WordPress stores your content and also renders the website from its own themes and templates. A headless CMS keeps only the first job. Editors still write and organize content in a familiar admin, but the CMS delivers that content through an API, usually REST or GraphQL, and a separate front end decides how it looks. That front end is often a framework such as Next.js, but the same content can also feed a mobile app, a storefront, kiosks or anything else that can call an API.

Separating the two gives you freedom: developers can choose the front-end stack, pages can be pre-rendered and served from a CDN for speed, content can be reused across channels, and the editing system doesn't have to be exposed to the public internet. The trade-offs are just as real. You need developers to build and maintain the front end, editors may lose some of the visual page-building they're used to unless the platform offers live preview or visual editing, and SEO essentials such as rendering, metadata, sitemaps and redirects become the front end's responsibility rather than a plugin's.

The guides below walk through that decision in order: understand the architecture, decide whether it fits, choose a platform and front end, plan the migration, and get it built.

Signs a headless CMS fits

Headless pays off when several of these are true. If none are, a well-built traditional CMS is usually the better choice.

✓
Content must reach a site, app and other channels
✓
Your developers want a modern front-end stack
✓
Page speed is a competitive priority
✓
The current CMS limits what the site can do
✓
You run multiple sites or brands from one content source
✓
Commerce needs a custom storefront experience
✓
Security requires the admin off the public web
✓
You have, or can hire, front-end development capacity

FAQ

Quick answers about headless CMS

What is a headless CMS?
A content management system that stores and manages content but doesn't render the website itself. It delivers content through an API, usually REST or GraphQL, to a separate front end such as a Next.js site, a mobile app or a storefront.
Is a headless CMS good for SEO?
It can be excellent for SEO, but only if the front end is built for it. Pages should be server-rendered or pre-rendered so search engines and AI crawlers see full HTML, and metadata, structured data, sitemaps, canonical tags and redirects have to be handled in the front end rather than by a CMS plugin.
Is headless more expensive than a traditional CMS?
Usually it costs more up front, because the front end is custom built and needs ongoing development. It can pay for itself when performance, multi-channel publishing or flexibility matter to the business; for a simple brochure site, a traditional CMS is often the better value.
Can I keep WordPress and go headless?
Yes. Headless WordPress keeps the familiar admin for editors and serves content through the REST API or GraphQL to a separate front end. It's a common first step for teams that like WordPress editing but want a faster, more flexible site.
Which headless CMS should I choose?
It depends on who edits content, how complex your content model is, whether you want open-source and self-hosted or a managed SaaS platform, and your budget. Our platform comparisons and use-case guides above break the choice down.
How do I migrate to a headless CMS without losing traffic?
Map every existing URL to its new location, set up 301 redirects, carry over titles, meta descriptions and structured data, keep internal links intact, and test rendering before launch. Our migration guides cover the steps for each starting platform.
