Why build an agent

An agent should finish a job, not just answer a question

A chatbot answers. An agent acts: it reads the request, chooses a step, uses your tools, checks what happened and keeps going until the job is done or it needs a person. That makes agents useful for work that crosses several systems and follows rules, such as handling a support request, qualifying a lead or preparing a report from scattered records.

It also makes them riskier. An agent that can update a record or send an email can do those things wrongly, and a demo rarely shows you how often that happens. Most of the work in a dependable agent is not the model. It is the permissions, the tests, the approval steps and the logs around it. That is the part we focus on.

We use AI agents in our own engineering. We run our own large website with Claude Code, and the rebuild case study covers what worked and what went wrong. We also built LedgerMCP, an MCP server for bookkeeping, and we publish an independent AI Agent Leaderboard that no one can pay to appear on. eSEOspace is a member of the Claude Partner Network. Claude and Claude Code are Anthropic's products.

What we build

AI agent development services

Custom agents for a specific job, the connections they need, and the upkeep that keeps them accurate. Every project starts narrow and grows only after it has proved itself.

  • Customer Support Agents

Answer routine questions from your own policies and records, look up orders or accounts, and hand anything sensitive to a person with the full context attached.

  • Lead Intake & Sales Agents

Qualify inquiries, update your CRM, draft follow-ups and book calls, so new leads get a quick first response and your team spends its time on the right ones.

  • Back-Office Agents

Read documents, move data between systems, reconcile records and prepare reports, with exceptions flagged for someone to decide.

  • Research & Reporting Agents

Gather information from your approved sources, compare it, cite where it came from and write the first draft of the brief or report.

  • MCP Servers & Integrations

Connect models to your CRM, database or internal tools through secure, documented connections, with the permissions scoped to what each agent needs.

  • Audits & Rescues

Already have an agent or pilot that is unreliable or too expensive? We review its prompts, tools, permissions and costs, then tell you what to fix or whether to stop.

How we work

The guardrails on every agent

An AI model can be confidently wrong, and it can be tricked by instructions hidden in the emails and web pages it reads. So we design every agent as if both will happen.

  • Least-privilege access for every tool
  • Secrets kept out of prompts and code
  • Human approval for risky or irreversible actions
  • Treat outside content as untrusted input
  • Spending and rate limits
  • A test set built from your real work
  • Tests re-run before every change ships
  • A log of every step and tool call
  • Staging before production
  • An off switch your team controls
  • A named person who owns the agent
  • Handover docs your team can use

A straight answer

When you should not build an agent

Plenty of jobs do not need one. If the steps are always the same, ordinary automation is cheaper, faster and easier to trust. If a good product already does the job, buy it. If a mistake would be expensive and nobody has time to review the work, or if nobody can say what a good result looks like, an agent will only make the problem harder to see.

We would rather tell you that during scoping than sell you a build you do not need. If plain software is the better answer, our AI-powered software and CRM and Claude Code development teams can build that instead.

The process

How an agent project runs

One job at a time, tested on your real work, with a person signing off at each stage.

  1. Pick the Job

We choose one job worth automating, write down what a good result looks like, and check whether plain software or an existing product would do it better.

  2. Test Models

We collect real examples from your work, including the awkward ones, and run the shortlisted models against them before any big build.

  3. Build

We connect the tools, set the permissions, write the instructions and add the approval steps, all in version control on a staging copy.

  4. Supervised Launch

The agent starts with a person approving its actions. We widen what it can do alone only when the results justify it.

  5. Measure & Maintain

We track quality, cost per task and how often people step in, then re-test when models, tools or your process change.

Choosing a model

We pick the model after testing, not before

Models change quickly, and the best one for coding may not be the best one for reading contracts or answering customers. We track the independent benchmarks on our coding, knowledge work and reliability boards, and the methodology explains how they are combined and where they fall short.

A benchmark only narrows the list. The decision comes from running your own examples, then weighing quality against cost per task, speed, and where your data is allowed to go. Where the job allows it, we also build so the model can be swapped later without rebuilding the agent, because this week's leader may not stay on top.

Pricing

Quoted per project, after scoping

Every agent is different, so we scope the job first and then give you a fixed quote for the build. The main cost drivers are how many systems it connects to, how much risk its actions carry and how much testing that requires. AI model usage is billed by the provider, separately from our fees, and we estimate it per task before you commit. Ongoing work can run on a monthly plan.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software that uses an AI model to work toward a goal: it decides on the next step, uses tools such as your CRM or inbox, checks the result, and carries on until the job is done or it needs a person. Our agent vs. chatbot guide explains the difference in plain English.
Do I need a custom agent, or will an off-the-shelf tool do?
Often an existing product is enough, and we will tell you when it is. Custom work makes sense when the job depends on your own systems or rules, when no product handles it well, or when per-seat or per-resolution pricing would cost more than owning the agent. Our AI agent guides compare the products by job.
Which AI model will you use?
The one that fits the job, your data rules and your budget. We start with the independent benchmarks on our AI Agent Leaderboard, then test the shortlisted models on examples of your own work, because a benchmark rank does not tell you how a model handles your data. Disclosure: eSEOspace is a member of the Claude Partner Network, and no one can pay for a position on the leaderboard.
How much does an AI agent cost?
We quote each project after scoping it, because cost depends on how many systems the agent touches, how much risk its actions carry and how much testing that risk calls for. Model usage is billed separately by the AI provider, and we estimate it per task before you commit. Our AI agent pricing guide explains the pricing models you will run into.
How long does it take to build one?
It depends on the job and on how quickly we can get access to your systems. We give you a timeline after scoping, and we prefer to launch one narrow job first, then widen it once the results hold up.
Can an agent work with the software we already use?
Usually, if the software has an API or an MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI models to tools, and we can build a server where none exists. We built LedgerMCP, an MCP server for bookkeeping. If a system has no way in, we will say so during scoping.
How do you keep an agent from doing something wrong?
We assume it will make mistakes and limit the damage they can do. It gets only the permissions the job needs, a person approves actions that are risky or hard to undo, spending has limits, every action is logged, and it can be switched off. Our guide to AI agent security risks covers the threats we design against.
Can you build agents for healthcare, legal or financial work?
We can build the tooling, but a qualified professional at your organization has to review the output and stay responsible for it. We will also need your compliance requirements up front, including which vendors may handle your data and whether you need agreements with them. We do not give legal, medical or tax advice.
Who looks after the agent once it is live?
Agents need upkeep: models change, the software they connect to changes, and your processes change. We can look after it on a monthly plan, or hand it over to your team with documentation.

Have a job you want an agent to do?

Tell us what the job is, which tools it touches and what a mistake would cost. We'll tell you plainly whether an agent is the right answer, and if it is, we'll outline the scope, the safeguards and a quote.
