ChatGPT ads in one minute

OpenAI started testing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. on February 9, 2026, and opened a self-serve Ads Manager on May 5, 2026. As of October 2026, ChatGPT ads run in more than 60 countries and businesses can sign up and buy them directly in 63 countries. OpenAI still describes the product as a beta.

Ads appear below a ChatGPT response, clearly labeled as sponsored and separated from the answer. They are shown to users on the Free and Go plans; Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts are ad-free, and OpenAI does not show ads to accounts identified as under 18. Ads are not eligible to appear near personal health, mental health or political conversations, and OpenAI says advertisers cannot influence ChatGPT's answers and never see users' chats.

You can buy views (CPM), clicks (CPC) or conversions (optimized bidding, billed per click or per thousand impressions) in an auction. Campaigns need a minimum daily budget of $25, there is no account minimum, and targeting works through context hints, location, platform and custom audiences rather than keywords. The guides below go deeper, in the order most businesses need them.

FAQ

Quick answers about ChatGPT ads

Are ChatGPT ads available to every business?
Businesses whose legal entity is based in one of the 63 countries where Ads Manager is available can sign up at ads.openai.com. Ads still go through review, account verification and billing setup before they run, and some categories are restricted: finance, health and legal advertisers are reviewed case by case and only in the U.S., and political ads, alcohol, tobacco, gambling and dating are not allowed.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
There is no account minimum, but each campaign needs a daily budget of at least $25 in the U.S. Pricing is set by auction. For click campaigns OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click; that is a starting point, not an average price. OpenAI has not published average CPMs, CPCs or conversion rates.
Who sees ads in ChatGPT?
Users on the Free and Go plans, including some logged-out users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don't see ads, accounts identified as under 18 don't see ads, and Temporary Chats don't show ads.
Can I target keywords in ChatGPT ads?
No. You can add context hints that describe the conversations your ad is relevant to, but OpenAI says they are not exact-match keywords and don't guarantee delivery. You can also target by country or region, platform, and custom audiences.
Do ChatGPT ads affect ChatGPT's answers?
OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter ChatGPT's responses. Organic visibility in ChatGPT answers is a separate discipline, often called generative engine optimization (GEO).
How do I measure ChatGPT ad results?
Install the OpenAI Pixel or connect the Conversions API, keep UTM parameters on your landing pages, and track conversions in your own analytics. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions.
