Claude Code for Business Websites

How to use Anthropic's agentic coding tool on a real business website without breaking it, from the team that rebuilt eseospace.com with it.

Last verified against Anthropic's documentation: September 2026. eSEOspace is not affiliated with Anthropic; "Claude" and "Claude Code" are Anthropic's products, named here to describe how we use them.

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool: it reads a project, edits files and runs commands on your behalf, with you approving what it does. This hub is for business owners, marketers and agency teams who want to use it on real websites without breaking them.

We rebuilt and now run eseospace.com with Claude Code as our day-to-day engineering partner, so everything here comes from doing the work: the setup we use, the files we give it, the checks we never skip and the mistakes that taught us those checks.

How we rebuilt eseospace.com with Claude Code

A 2,200-page WordPress site moved to a static build: the decisions, the numbers, what the AI did well and where it went wrong.

What Claude Code is, in plain terms

Most AI chat tools give you code to paste somewhere. Claude Code works inside your project instead. You describe the change, it reads the relevant files, proposes a plan, edits the files, runs commands such as a build or a test, and shows you the result. You decide how much it may do without asking.

According to Anthropic's overview, you can use it in a terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains editors, in a desktop app and on the web, and it works with a paid Claude plan or an Anthropic Console account. The terminal is where most people start.

What it is good for on a business website

These are tasks we hand to Claude Code on client and in-house sites, with a person reviewing every change:

  • Site-wide fixes: updating a phone number, a price or an outdated claim on every page where it appears, including the copies hidden in structured data.
  • SEO housekeeping: checking titles and meta descriptions, building redirect maps after a redesign, finding broken internal links, adding or correcting schema markup.
  • Migrations: moving content from one platform to another and checking that every URL still resolves.
  • Content operations: turning approved drafts into published pages with the right template, images, internal links and sitemap entries.
  • Audits: reading hundreds of pages and flagging statements that are outdated or unsupported, so a person can decide what to change.

It is weaker where judgment matters more than typing: choosing what your brand should say, deciding pricing, or knowing which facts about your business are true. Those stay with people.

Getting started safely

  1. Install it using the method in Anthropic's quickstart. It runs on macOS, Linux, Windows and WSL.
  2. Work on a copy. Put the site in git and create a branch before the first session, so every change can be reviewed and undone.
  3. Run /init in the project to create a starter CLAUDE.md, then edit it. This file is the instructions Claude reads at the start of every session. Our CLAUDE.md templates show what to put in it.
  4. Plan before editing. Plan mode lets Claude read and propose without changing files. Anthropic's best practices recommend exploring and planning first, then implementing, then committing.
  5. Give it a way to check its work: a build command, a link checker, a screenshot, a test. It closes the loop far better when it can verify.
  6. Review the diff before anything is committed, and never let a session deploy to production without a person checking the result.

The rules we follow on every site

  • Secrets such as API keys and passwords never go into prompts or into CLAUDE.md; we block the AI from reading environment files in the project's permission settings.
  • One task per session. We clear the conversation between unrelated jobs so old context does not leak into new work.
  • Every bulk edit runs first on a copy, then twice on the real files, and the second run must change nothing. If it does, the edit is not safe to repeat.
  • Facts come from primary sources. When the AI states a date, a law or a platform rule, we check it before it is published.
  • Before deploying, we check git log for changes made by anyone else, so two sessions never overwrite each other's work.

Anthropic's security documentation covers the permission system, sandboxing and how to handle untrusted content; read it before connecting Claude Code to anything sensitive.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?

You can start without deep coding knowledge, but you need to understand your project well enough to judge the result: what should change, what must not, and how to tell if the site still works. Git and a staging copy make that much safer.

Is Claude Code free?

No. Anthropic lists it as available with paid Claude plans or through an Anthropic Console account billed by usage. Check Anthropic's current plans before you budget.

Can Claude Code work on a WordPress or Shopify site?

Yes, when it has access to the files: a WordPress theme or plugin in a local or staging copy, or a Shopify theme pulled down with Shopify's CLI. It cannot safely change a live site through its admin screen, and you should not let it try.

Will pages built with AI rank worse on Google?

Google judges the page, not the tool used to build it. Pages rank on usefulness, accuracy and a sound technical setup, which is why the review and fact-checking steps above matter more than the tool.

Can eSEOspace set this up for my team?

Yes. We set up projects, write the CLAUDE.md and permission files, and run AI-assisted builds and migrations with our own review process. Contact us to talk it through.

Want a site built or migrated this way?

We use Claude Code with a human review on every change, for new builds, migrations and site-wide fixes.
