Claude Code vs Replit Agent for website work: which fits your site?

This article is part of our Claude Code Guide: what Claude Code is, how to use it safely on a business website, and how to budget for and choose help. Want it set up for your team? See Claude Code consulting.

Choose Replit Agent if you want one place to build, host and publish a new site or app from plain-English prompts, with the hosting, database and domain handled inside Replit. Choose Claude Code if you already have a website in a git repository, on a host you want to keep, and you want an agent that works on those files where they live. Both are capable agents that write and run real code, and both can use Claude models, so the decision is mostly about where your site lives and who will look after it.

Replit Agent is the AI agent inside Replit, a browser-based platform that also hosts what you build. Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It runs in your terminal, an IDE, the Claude desktop app or the browser, and it isn't a hosting service: you deploy to whatever host you already use.

Plans, models and features below are as of October 2026, taken from each vendor's own pages. Our comparison of Claude Code vs Lovable, Bolt and v0 covers Replit briefly alongside other app builders.

Key Takeaways

  • Replit's pricing page lists Core at $20 per month ($18 per month billed annually) and Pro at $100 per month ($90 billed annually). Enterprise can now be bought inside the product, but no Enterprise price is printed.
  • Replit Agent offers Claude models in its paid modes: Claude Sonnet 5 and Sonnet 4.6 in Power Mode, and Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Opus 5 and others in Max Mode, billed from Replit credits.
  • Replit's checkpoints capture code, project files, the AI conversation and database contents, and a rollback can include the development database. Claude Code's checkpoints cover file edits it makes, not Bash changes or remote systems such as databases or deployments.
  • Replit runs a Lighthouse-based SEO rating after each publish, and its SEO Agent turns findings into fixes on paid plans. It works only on apps published on Replit.
  • Replit uses your prompts and content to improve its models. Only Pro users can opt out, and Enterprise content is not used. Claude's consumer plans have a training setting you can turn off, and Team, Enterprise and API use is not trained on by default.
  • With either tool, a person should review every change before it reaches the live site.

What each tool is

Replit describes itself as "the AI platform that helps you turn your ideas into real outcomes," where you "create, launch, and grow apps, sites, tools, and businesses in one place." Replit Agent is the part you chat with. It builds, debugs and changes your project in Replit's cloud workspace, and Replit can then publish it, attach a custom domain or sell you one. It can also push to and import from GitHub.

Claude Code, in Anthropic's words, "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools." It works on a folder of files on your computer, or on a GitHub repository in a cloud session, and it leaves hosting to you. Our explainer on what Claude Code is covers the basics.

Put simply, Replit is a platform that includes an agent, and Claude Code is an agent that plugs into the platform you already have.

Pricing in October 2026

Replit

Replit's pricing page shows Core at $20 per month, or $18 per month billed annually, with "$20 towards more powerful models" and "Up to 30 hours of chat on Free Mode." Pro is $100 per month, or $90 billed annually, with "$100 towards most powerful models," "10 parallel agents" and "Up to 15 collaborators." Core lets you invite up to 5 builders. Pro has no per-user fees: everyone works from the same plan and pooled credits, and unused Pro credits roll over for two months.

The free Starter plan gives daily Agent credits and one published app, which "will automatically go down after 30 days." Plan Mode and full build need Core.

Agent work in Power and Max Modes uses "effort-based pricing based on request complexity," and "Replit asks for confirmation before a paid action starts." Each request produces one checkpoint, and simpler requests usually cost less than complex builds. Hosting is billed separately by usage (outbound data, compute, requests and databases), and Core includes 100 GiB of outbound data transfer.

Enterprise is now self-serve: builders on any plan "can move to Enterprise without leaving the product," with "Unlimited seats: No per-seat costs." No Enterprise price is printed.

Claude Code

Claude Code is included in Claude Pro ($20 per month billed monthly, or $200 a year), Max (from $100 per month), every Team seat ($25 per month billed monthly or $20 annually for a Standard seat) and Enterprise, within each plan's usage limits. It is not in the free plan. You can also pay per token through an Anthropic Console account. Our Claude Code pricing guide has the details. Confirm current prices on Anthropic's pricing page.

What this means

The entry prices match, but they buy different things. Replit's plan includes hosting tools and credits that pay for Agent, publishing and storage from one balance. A Claude plan pays for the agent only, and your hosting bill stays wherever it is today.

Claude models inside Replit

Replit's model selector reference lists Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Sonnet 4.6 in Power Mode, and Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Opus 4.8, Claude Opus 5 and Claude Opus 5 Fast in Max Mode, alongside GPT-6 and Kimi models. Free Mode "always uses intelligent model routing," so you don't pick the model there. Replit says the in-app list is the source of truth for your account.

So the model is not the main difference; the tooling around it is.

Where each one fits website work

Replit Agent suits you if:

  • You are starting a new site, landing page or small web app and want it hosted without setting up a separate host.
  • You want to start from the look of an existing site. Replit's Import from URL "recreates a website as a design frame," though Replit is clear that the import "recreates look and feel as a starting point, not a pixel copy of your markup."
  • You want built-in SEO checks on what you publish. After every publish, Replit "runs an SEO audit and shows an SEO rating," and SEO Agent turns findings into one-click fixes on paid plans.
  • Several non-developers will build together from one shared credit balance. If you later move off a hosted platform, plan for the hosting, database and domain it handled; our comparison of Claude Code vs website builders covers that trade-off.

Claude Code suits you if:

  • Your site already exists on WordPress, Shopify, a static host or a framework such as Next.js, and you want to keep that host.
  • The work is sitewide: hundreds of pages of markup, redirects, structured data or content moves. Claude Code works across the whole repository and runs your own build and test commands.
  • You want project rules in a CLAUDE.md file and permission rules in your settings, kept in git with the site.

When we rebuilt eseospace.com with Claude Code, a first attempt at a clean Next.js rebuild was abandoned on day one because it broke the theme's animations, accordions, widgets and menus. A person decided to keep the theme's own JavaScript instead. The lesson applies to any tool that "recreates" a site: check that what matters on the old site still works on the new one. Our rebuild case study has the details, and moving content between platforms covers migrations.

Undo, review and safety

Replit's checkpoints "automatically capture your complete project state," including "connected databases," and a rollback restores the app "to any previous checkpoint state with a single click." By default, though, a rollback doesn't change your database: you choose to include the development database, and Replit says production databases aren't restored this way. Replit also offers GitHub sync and "Download as zip," so you can keep a copy outside Replit.

Claude Code's checkpoints let you rewind its file edits, but Anthropic says checkpointing "does not track files modified by Bash commands," and that actions on remote systems (databases, APIs, deployments) "can't be checkpointed." On a real website, git is your safety net with Claude Code. Our guide to checkpoints and rewind explains what can and can't be undone.

For both tools:

  1. Don't publish straight from the agent. Replit's SEO Agent shows fixes as "Ready for review" before you apply them to the main version. Use that step, and read the change. With Claude Code, work on a branch and review the diff before anything deploys.
  2. Keep secrets out of prompts. Replit has a Secrets tool for keys. With Claude Code, keep keys in environment files your permission settings block it from reading, never in a prompt or CLAUDE.md.

Privacy and data use

Replit's model improvement page says: "We use content you provide, including your prompts, instructions, context, and responses generated for you, to help develop and improve our models and AI features." It adds: "This control is available to Pro users. For Enterprise users, Replit does not use customer content to train its models." On Starter and Core, the page gives no opt-out.

For Claude Code, Anthropic trains on data from Free, Pro and Max accounts only when the model-training setting is on, and you can turn it off. Under commercial terms (Team, Enterprise and the API), Anthropic "does not train generative models using code or prompts sent to Claude Code" unless the customer opts in.

Replit Enterprise adds SSO with SCIM, audit logs streamed to your security tools, and admin controls to "require private deployments, ban public apps, mandate security scans, and pin deployment geographies." If your site handles client or regulated data, check both vendors' current terms with your advisers. This is a summary, not legal advice.

How to decide

  1. Start from where your site lives. New project with no host: Replit is the shorter path. Existing site on a host you like: Claude Code.
  2. Decide who maintains it. A non-developer who wants one dashboard may prefer Replit; a team with git and a review process, Claude Code.
  3. Price both properly. Compare a Claude plan plus your current hosting with Replit Core or Pro plus usage-billed hosting and paid Agent modes.
  4. Pilot on a copy with one real task, and have a person review the result before it goes live.

Conclusion

Replit Agent and Claude Code can both build real websites, and both can run Claude models. Replit wraps the agent in a platform that hosts, publishes and audits what you build, which suits new projects and teams that want one place for everything. Claude Code works on the site you already have, in git, on the host you already pay for, which suits existing sites and sitewide changes. Pick by where the site lives and who will look after it, and keep a person reviewing every change. If you would rather have an existing site rebuilt or maintained this way, our Claude Code development team can help. More guides are in our Claude Code Guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Claude models in Replit?

Yes, as of October 2026. Builders on Core and Pro can choose Claude models in Power Mode (Sonnet 5, Sonnet 4.6) or Max Mode (Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Opus 4.8, Opus 5 and Opus 5 Fast). The cost comes out of your Replit credits. Free Mode picks the model for you.

Is Replit cheaper than Claude Code?

Both start at $20 per month billed monthly. Replit's credits also pay for publishing and storage, while a Claude plan covers the agent only, so add your current hosting to the Claude side before comparing.

Can Replit work on my existing WordPress or Shopify site?

Replit's Import from URL recreates a site's look and feel as a starting point, not a copy of its markup, so it is a way to rebuild rather than edit in place. Replit also documents reviewing any live website for links, responsiveness and accessibility. If the site's code is in GitHub, Replit can import the repository and open a pull request with a change; Claude Code works on those files where they already live.

Can I move a Replit project to Claude Code later?

Yes. Sync the project to GitHub or download it as a zip, then open it with Claude Code. You will need to replace anything Replit provided, such as hosting, the database and stored secrets.

Does Replit train on my code?

Replit says it uses your prompts, context and generated responses to improve its models. Pro users can opt out in Settings, and Replit does not train on Enterprise customer content. Check the current page before you put client data into any tool.
