Claude.ai chat vs Claude Code vs the Claude API: which one does your business need?
Claude.ai chat vs Claude Code vs the Claude API: which one does your business need?

Most businesses need Claude.ai chat first, Claude Code when someone will change files on a website or app, and the Claude API only when you are building Claude into your own software. They are three ways to use the same family of AI models, and they do different jobs.
Claude.ai is the chat app: you type, Claude answers, and you copy what you need. Claude Code is an agent that works on files and runs commands in a project folder, so it can make the change instead of describing it. The Claude API is the developer connection your own software uses to send text to Claude and get answers back, billed per use. The quickest way to choose is by the job you want done, and the decision table below does exactly that.
Two details save money. The Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans include both chat and Claude Code under one subscription, as of October 2026. The API is billed separately, per token, through the Claude Console.
Key Takeaways
- Claude.ai chat is for conversation, writing and analysis of things you paste or upload. In the desktop app, Anthropic describes the Chat tab as "General conversation with no file access."
- Claude Code is for changing a project: it reads and edits files, runs commands and checks its work. It is included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, not in the free plan.
- The Claude API is for software you build, such as a CRM feature or a support tool. It is billed per million tokens; Sonnet 5.5 is $2 input and $10 output per million tokens as of October 2026.
- Chat and Claude Code usage on a subscription "counts towards the same usage limit," according to Anthropic support.
- Claude Cowork, in the Claude desktop, web and mobile apps on paid plans, is a fourth option for non-technical delegated work. Anthropic says it "uses the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required."
The three products in plain terms
Claude.ai (chat)
The Claude app on the web, desktop and phone. You have a conversation. You can upload documents such as PDFs, Word files and spreadsheets, and keep files in a project for repeated use. Claude answers in text and can create files such as documents, and the result stays in the chat until you copy or download it. Nothing on your website changes unless you change it.
Claude Code
Anthropic calls it "an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools." You point it at a folder, usually a copy of your website's code in git, and give it a task. It gathers context, makes changes, runs a check such as a build, and reports back. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains editors, in the desktop app's Code tab and in the browser at claude.ai/code. Our plain-English guide to Claude Code covers how it works.
The Claude API
The API is how software talks to Claude. Anthropic's developer docs describe two ways to build: the Messages API, "Direct model prompting access," and Claude Managed Agents, a "Pre-built, configurable agent harness that runs in managed infrastructure." You get an API key from the Claude Console, your developer writes code that sends requests, and you pay for the tokens used. Tokens are the small chunks of text models read and write; a page of text is many hundreds of them.
Decision table: which one for which job
| Job | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Draft a blog post, email or proposal | Claude.ai chat | Conversation and editing; no files need to change |
| Summarize a PDF, contract or report | Claude.ai chat | Upload the file and ask; review the summary yourself |
| Analyze a spreadsheet export once | Claude.ai chat | Upload a CSV or XLSX and ask questions |
| Update titles and meta descriptions on 300 pages | Claude Code | It edits the files directly and can check every page |
| Fix a layout bug across a site template | Claude Code | It reads the code, edits it and runs the build |
| Build a redirect map for a site migration | Claude Code | It can crawl, compare URL lists and write the redirects file |
| Build a small internal tool or report script | Claude Code | It writes and runs code in your project |
| Add an AI feature to your CRM or website, such as lead summaries | Claude API | Your software calls Claude every time it runs |
| Classify thousands of support tickets every day | Claude API | Automated, high-volume, billed per use |
| Hand off research or file organizing without a terminal | Claude Cowork | Agentic work in the Claude apps, on paid plans |
A simple rule: if a person reads the answer, use chat. If files in a project need to change, use Claude Code. If software needs Claude's help every time it runs, use the API. For more ideas of the second kind, see 25 things Claude Code can do on a business website.
Where Claude Code and the API overlap
Claude Code can itself run on API billing. The product page says: "When used with a Claude Console account, Claude Code consumes API tokens at standard API pricing." Some teams choose this for automation, such as running Claude Code in a CI pipeline (the automated checks that run when code changes). Anthropic also offers the Agent SDK, which "gives you the same tools, agent loop, and context management that power Claude Code, programmable in Python and TypeScript."
Be careful with one setting. If an API key is set in your computer's environment, Anthropic support says "Claude Code will use this API key for authentication instead of your Claude subscription." A developer who has a key set for another project may run up API charges without noticing. Run /usage inside Claude Code to see session cost and plan usage, and check your environment before you start.
Some features need a subscription and do not work with a Console key: cloud sessions, the Desktop app, routines, Remote Control and the Chrome extension, among others. Anthropic's feature availability page has the full list.
What each costs as of October 2026
All prices are USD from claude.com/pricing and Anthropic's pricing docs, checked October 14, 2026. Confirm on Anthropic's pricing page before you buy, because plans change.
| Option | Chat | Claude Code | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Yes | No | $0 |
| Pro | Yes | Yes | $20/month billed monthly, or $17/month billed annually ($200 up front) |
| Max | Yes | Yes | $100 or $200/month, monthly billing only |
| Team | Yes | Yes, every seat | Standard $25/seat monthly or $20 annual; Premium $125 monthly or $100 annual; 2-seat minimum |
| Enterprise | Yes | Yes | US$20/seat/month billed annually, 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates |
| API (Console) | No app plan | Yes, at API prices | Per token: Sonnet 5.5 $2 in / $10 out; Opus 5.5 $4 / $20; Haiku 5.5 $0.10 / $0.50 per million tokens (prompts up to 100K) |
Two common misreadings. First, Max plans now include monthly API credits ($100 on Max 5x, $200 on Max 20x), but Anthropic says these do not cover "Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop, or web." Second, Team API credits "can't be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps." Don't count either toward your Claude Code budget. Our Claude Code pricing guide explains the plans and limits in detail.
Usage limits are shared
On subscription plans, chat and Claude Code draw from the same allowance. Anthropic support says usage in claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop "counts towards the same usage limit," and Pro and Max have "a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit." Anthropic also notes the difference in weight: chat is "Lower intensity," while Claude Code is "Higher intensity," because each coding session includes file context, tool calls and multi-step reasoning.
In practice, a person who chats lightly and runs a few Claude Code tasks a week may be fine on Pro. A person running long site-wide jobs every day will hit limits sooner. Anthropic publishes multipliers between plans, not exact hours, so watch /usage during your first weeks rather than guessing.
Data and privacy differences
Which terms apply depends on the plan, not the product. Anthropic's docs say Consumer Terms apply to Free, Pro and Max, and Commercial Terms apply to Team, Enterprise and API users. On consumer plans, Anthropic trains new models on your data when the training setting is on, "including when you use Claude Code from these accounts." Under commercial terms, Anthropic says it does not train on code or prompts sent to Claude Code unless the customer opts in.
If your website code or client data is sensitive, a commercial plan and a check of the training setting come first. This is a summary, not legal advice. Ask counsel to review the terms for your situation.
One rule applies to all three: never paste passwords, API keys or customer records into a prompt. Anthropic's API docs say to keep keys "out of source control, client-side code, and prompts."
When you need more than one
Many small businesses end up using two. A common pattern: the marketing team uses chat for drafting and research, and one technical person uses Claude Code on the website repository. The API comes in later, when the business wants Claude inside its own tools, such as summarizing new leads in the CRM. We describe that kind of build in how we integrate ChatGPT and Claude into custom business software.
If nobody on your team works with code, start with chat and Cowork, and read whether non-developers can use Claude Code before buying seats for it.
Conclusion
Choose by the job. Chat is for answers people read, Claude Code is for changes to files in a project, and the API is for software that calls Claude on its own. A Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan covers chat and Claude Code together; the API is a separate, per-token bill. If you want Claude built into your CRM or internal software, our AI software and CRM development team does that work, and our Claude Code development service handles website builds and changes. Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Code included with Claude Pro?
Yes. As of October 2026, Claude Code is included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. The free plan does not include it. Usage is shared with your chat use on the same plan.
Do I need an API key to use Claude Code?
No. You can sign in with a paid Claude subscription. An API key from the Claude Console is an alternative that bills per token. If both exist, a key set in your environment takes over, so check which one you are using.
Can Claude.ai chat edit my website?
Not directly. Chat writes text and code that you copy yourself. Claude Code is the product that edits files in a project and runs commands, inside the permission limits you set.
Is the API cheaper than a subscription?
It depends on volume. The API bills every token, so light, occasional use can cost little and heavy agent sessions can cost a lot. Anthropic's costs page reports that across enterprise deployments, Claude Code averages around $13 per developer per active day. Treat that as Anthropic's average, not a quote for your team.
What is Claude Cowork, and is it different from Claude Code?
Cowork is an agent for delegated work that doesn't need a terminal. As of October 2026 it is available on paid plans in the Claude desktop app, and on the web and mobile apps for Pro, Max and Team (on Enterprise, where an admin enables it). Anthropic's course material puts it simply: "Work you hand off runs in Cowork," and "Building software happens in the Code tab."
