Claude Code vs ChatGPT for website work: which one should do the job?

Use ChatGPT for website work that starts and ends in a conversation or a file: drafting page copy, researching competitors, checking a live page, or building a small new site that ChatGPT hosts for you with Sites. Use Claude Code when the job is changing an existing website's own files, across many pages, in a git repository, with your build and tests run before anything goes live. ChatGPT's own coding agent for that second kind of job is Codex, which we compare separately.

The fair comparison is not "ChatGPT vs Claude Code" as products of the same kind. OpenAI now splits ChatGPT into three ways of working: Chat, ChatGPT Work and Codex. Anthropic has a similar split: Claude chat, Cowork (which Anthropic is folding into Claude chat on Pro and Max) and Claude Code. This article looks at what a website owner gets from ChatGPT without Codex, and where Claude Code fits instead.

Plans, models and features below are as of October 2026, from OpenAI's and Anthropic's own documentation. Both change often, so check before you buy.

Key Takeaways

  • OpenAI says to "Use Chat for a question or back-and-forth," turn on Work "to carry a larger task through to a reviewable result," and select Codex "when you want developer views or more technical detail."
  • ChatGPT Work can browse websites, create files and "Run code and shell commands," and it shares usage limits and pricing with Codex.
  • Sites, ChatGPT's hosted websites feature, is in public beta on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. OpenAI says "Every Sites deployment URL is a production deployment."
  • ChatGPT plans run from Free and Go ($8 per month) to Plus ($20), Pro (from $100) and Business ($20 per user per month billed annually, $25 monthly, 2+ users). ChatGPT offers OpenAI models only.
  • Claude Code works on your site's files where they live, with project rules in CLAUDE.md, permission prompts and your own build and test commands. It is included in Claude Pro ($20 per month billed monthly) and above.
  • Whichever you use, a person must review the result before it reaches the live site.

The three ways to use ChatGPT

OpenAI's Use ChatGPT guide sets out the split. Chat is for asking, brainstorming, drafting and comparing. ChatGPT Work "can plan a task, gather context, use tools, and carry the work through to a result you can review." Its examples are a deck, a report or a file analysis. Codex is for "Debug code, run tests, review a PR, implement a feature."

Work is more capable than many people assume. OpenAI lists that it can search and browse websites, read and create documents, spreadsheets and PDFs, "build or share websites and apps with Sites," and "Run code and shell commands, analyze data, inspect files, review code, and work with repositories your selected environment can access." On the web it runs in a managed cloud environment. In the desktop app it may also work with local files.

The difference from Codex is mostly presentation. In the desktop app, ChatGPT Work hides "technical details like Git or shell commands" and prefers "nontechnical language and finished outputs," while Codex shows "developer details, including diff and review views." OpenAI says Work "gives you the same core capabilities with an experience designed for everyday work." For editing a real site's code, the diff view matters, which is why our Claude Code vs OpenAI Codex comparison is the right read for that job.

What Claude Code does differently

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. In Anthropic's words, it "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools," in the terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or the browser. It shows you what it plans to change, asks permission before actions you haven't approved, and can run your build so you see whether the change worked. A CLAUDE.md file in the project tells it your site's rules every session.

So the closest Claude equivalent of ChatGPT Chat is Claude chat, and the closest equivalent of ChatGPT Work is Claude Cowork, which Anthropic says "uses the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required." Claude Code is the developer-facing agent, like Codex. Our guide to Claude Code vs Claude.ai vs the Claude API explains Anthropic's side of the split.

Which tool for which website job

Website jobChatGPT without CodexClaude Code
Draft or rewrite page copyGood fit (Chat)Possible, but a chat tool is simpler
Research competitors or check a live pageGood fit (Work with browsing on paid plans)Possible; Claude in Chrome connects Claude Code to a real browser
Build a small new site and host itSites (public beta, Plus and above)Builds it, but doesn't host it; you deploy to your own host
Change templates or markup across hundreds of pagesNot its focus; OpenAI points developers to CodexGood fit, in your repository, with your build run before review
Redirect maps, structured data, sitewide fact changesWork can draft them as files; Codex can apply them in codeCan apply and test them in the code, for a person to review
Review a code change before it shipsWork can review code; the diff view is in CodexShows diffs; works with git and GitHub pull requests

The pattern: ChatGPT is strong when the output is text, a file, research or a new hosted page. Claude Code is strong when the output is a tested change to the files your existing site is built from. For a fuller list of jobs, see what Claude Code can do for a business website.

ChatGPT Sites for a business website

Sites "lets ChatGPT create, host, refine, and share websites, web apps, and games." You start it by including the word "website" in your prompt or mentioning @Sites. Sites can store data in a relational database and files in object storage, records visitor analytics without an analytics SDK (except for Sites owned by an Enterprise workspace), and connects custom domains you already own. Our comparison of Claude Code vs website builders looks at hosted options like this in more depth.

Before you put a business site on it, read the limits in OpenAI's Sites documentation:

  • No staging by default. "Every Sites deployment URL is a production deployment. If you want to review a build before it becomes live, ask ChatGPT to save a version without deploying it."
  • Banned uses. "Don't use Sites to process Protected Health Information or payment-card data" or "enable financial transactions." That rules it out for many clinic, legal and e-commerce jobs.
  • Hosting limits. "Some frameworks, private networks, databases, background services, and hosting patterns aren't supported," and Sites "doesn't support data residency or inference residency at launch."
  • Domains. "Sites doesn't register domains for you." Custom domains "aren't available in Enterprise workspaces at launch."
  • Usage limits. "Plan-specific usage limits apply across all Sites during the beta," and OpenAI doesn't publish the numbers in its docs.

Sites suits a campaign page, a simple tool or a prototype. It is not a way to edit the WordPress, Shopify or custom site you already run. For that, you need an agent working on that site's files, with a staging copy to test on first. Our guide to setting up a staging site covers that step.

Plans and models in October 2026

ChatGPT

OpenAI's pricing page for ChatGPT Work and Codex lists Free ($0), Go ($8 per month), Plus ($20 per month), Pro ("Plans at $100, $200, or $500 USD per month") and Business ($20 per user per month, "2+ users, billed annually. $25 per user per month when billed monthly."). Enterprise and Edu are "Contact sales." It says "ChatGPT Work and Codex share usage," with the same pricing, credits and limits. Cloud browsing is available "on paid plans other than Free and Go."

ChatGPT runs OpenAI models only. OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna "are available in Work and Codex. They aren't available in Chat."

Claude Code

Claude Code is included in Claude Pro ($20 per month billed monthly, or $200 a year), Max (from $100 per month), every Team seat ($25 per month billed monthly or $20 annually for a Standard seat) and Enterprise, within each plan's usage limits. The free Claude plan does not include it. Claude chat and Claude Code share the same limits. Claude Code runs Claude models only.

What this means

At the entry level the prices match: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are both $20 per month billed monthly. The choice is about the work, not the price. A team may find one chat tool is enough for copy and research, and only need a coding agent when they change the site itself.

Data, privacy and admin controls

OpenAI says Business, Enterprise and Edu workspace data "is encrypted in transit and at rest and is not used to train OpenAI models by default," and its pricing page promises "No training on your business data by default" for Business. For ChatGPT Work, its admin FAQ adds that "This experience does not provide strict zero data retention." OpenAI's pricing table marks its "No training on API or business data by default" row for Business, Enterprise and the API, not Plus or Pro, so if you use a personal plan, open ChatGPT's data controls and check the setting yourself.

For Claude Code, Anthropic's data usage page says it trains on Free, Pro and Max data only "when this setting is on," and you can turn it off. Under commercial terms (Team, Enterprise and the API), Anthropic "does not train generative models using code or prompts sent to Claude Code" unless the customer opts in. Our guide to Claude Code data privacy covers retention and plans in detail.

With either tool, never paste passwords, API keys or client records into a prompt. If your site handles health, legal or payment data, check both vendors' terms with your advisers. This is a summary, not legal advice.

Review rules that apply to both

  1. Treat AI output as a draft. Copy, code and structured data from either tool need a person to check facts, prices and claims before they go live. Our comparison of AI-generated vs human-edited content explains why.
  2. Keep a copy of the site to test on. Run changes there first, then on the live site.
  3. Read what changed. With Claude Code, review the diff in git. With ChatGPT output you paste in yourself, compare the old and new page before you publish.
  4. Run bulk edits twice. On eseospace.com, our rule for every bulk edit is to run it on a copy, then twice on the real files; the second run must change nothing.
  5. Keep a person in charge of deploys. No session, in either tool, should publish to your live site without someone checking it.

Using both

A lot of website work splits naturally between the two. A marketer drafts page copy and a content brief in ChatGPT or Claude chat. A developer, or a careful non-developer working on a staging copy, uses Claude Code to put that copy into the templates, update the structured data and internal links, and run the build. The chat tool never needs access to the site's files, and the coding agent works with the project's rules and permissions in place.

Conclusion

ChatGPT is a strong choice for the conversation and file side of website work, and Sites can host a small new site, with real limits for business use. Claude Code is built for changing the website you already have: it works on the files in your repository, runs your checks and shows you every change. Use the chat tool you prefer for writing and research, use a coding agent for the site itself, and keep a person reviewing what ships. If you want help putting that workflow on your own site, our Claude Code development team does this work. More guides are in our Claude Code Guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT edit my existing website?

ChatGPT Work can run code and work with repositories its environment can access, and Codex is OpenAI's tool built for code changes. Plain Chat can only give you text or files that you apply yourself. For sitewide changes to an existing site, a coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex, working on a copy in git, is the safer route.

Can I use Claude models in ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT's model documentation lists OpenAI models only, as of October 2026. To use Claude, use Claude chat, Cowork or Claude Code, or a third-party tool that offers Claude models.

Is ChatGPT Sites a replacement for my website host?

For a simple page or prototype, it can be. For most business sites, check the limits first: every deployment is production unless you save a version, health and payment data are banned, and custom domains aren't available in Enterprise workspaces at launch.

Which is cheaper for a small business?

ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro both cost $20 per month billed monthly as of October 2026. If you only need copy and research, one chat plan may be enough. If you need changes made to your site's code, compare what each plan includes for that work.

Does ChatGPT train on my website content?

OpenAI says Business, Enterprise and Edu data is not used for training by default. For Free, Go, Plus and Pro, check the data controls in your ChatGPT settings. On Claude, consumer plans have a training setting you can turn off, and commercial plans are not trained on by default.
