Claude Code for small business owners: what you can do yourself
Claude Code for small business owners: what you can do yourself

Yes, a small business owner can use Claude Code without being a developer. It runs in the Claude desktop app with no terminal, it works on the files in a folder you choose, and you describe the job in plain English. Good first jobs are the ones where you can check the result yourself: turning an export into a report, cleaning up a customer list, drafting page copy, or making a small change to a copy of your website.
It needs a paid Claude plan. As of October 2026, Pro costs $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front). The free plan doesn't include Claude Code. Where it gets risky is anything that reaches customers: your live website, forms, payments, tracking and customer data. Those need a copy of the site, a record of every change, and a person who reviews before anything goes live. Sometimes that person should be someone you hire.
This guide covers the jobs worth trying, what they cost, how to set up safely, and the point where you should stop and get help.
Key Takeaways
- Claude Code is included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, not the free plan. Pro is $20 a month billed monthly or $17 a month billed annually, as of October 2026.
- The Code tab in the Claude desktop app gives you Claude Code without a terminal. Anthropic says the app "includes Claude Code, so you don't need to install Node.js or the CLI."
- Owner-friendly jobs are ones you can check yourself: reports from exports, file and spreadsheet clean-up, drafts and small edits on a copy of your site.
- Work on a copy, review every change, and keep publishing to your live site as a separate step a person takes. Claude Code's rewind can't undo a deployment.
- Pro and Max are consumer plans. Anthropic trains new models on their data when the training setting is on, so check that setting before you share business files.
- Hire help for payments, forms, tracking, customer data, rebuilds and migrations, or when you don't have time to review the work.
What Claude Code is, in owner terms
Claude chat answers questions and writes text you then copy somewhere. Claude Code does the work on your files. You point it at a folder, ask for a result, and it reads the files, makes changes, runs the steps needed and checks what it did. Anthropic describes it as "an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools."
Despite the name, it isn't only for code. Anthropic's terminal guide says "You don't need to know how to code," and gives the example prompt "look at the screenshots on my Desktop and rename them based on what's in each image." Our guide on whether non-developers can use Claude Code covers the skills you'll want, such as reading a list of changes and knowing how to roll one back.
Jobs a business owner can hand it
The prompts below are illustrations, not magic words. Each job has a check you can do without technical skills.
| Job | Example prompt | How you check it |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly sales summary | Read the sales exports in this folder and make a one-page summary by product and month, as a spreadsheet | Spot-check two or three totals against your own records |
| Clean a customer list | Remove duplicate rows from customers.csv, fix capitalization and save a new file; don't change the original | Compare row counts and open a few changed rows |
| Organize files | Rename the invoices in this folder by date and client name, and list every change you made | Read the list and open a sample |
| Draft page copy | Using my notes in services.txt, draft a plain-English FAQ for my services page; mark anything you're unsure of | You confirm every fact, price and promise |
| Update a detail across a site copy | Find every place our old phone number appears in this site folder and show me before changing anything | Review the list, then the changes, then the pages in a browser |
| A small internal tool | Build a simple quote calculator page I can open on my computer, using the rates in rates.txt | Test it with a few quotes you already know the answer to |
The pattern is the same each time: a clear input, a result you can see, and a check. For a longer list of website jobs, see what Claude Code can do for a business website.
What it costs
Prices below are as of October 2026, in US dollars. Confirm them on Anthropic's pricing page before you buy.
| Plan | Price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front) | An owner trying it for occasional jobs |
| Max 5x / Max 20x | $100 or $200 a month, monthly billing only | Heavy daily use by one person |
| Team | Standard seats $25 per member a month billed monthly, or $20 billed annually; at least two members | A business with staff who also use it, and who want business terms |
Pro and Max have a usage limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit, and Anthropic says they are "shared across Claude and Claude Code." Anthropic publishes these as multiples of Pro (5x and 20x for Max), not as hours or message counts. If you hit a limit, you can wait for the reset or turn on usage credits, which are billed at standard API rates with a monthly spend limit you choose. Our Claude Code pricing guide explains each plan in detail.
Getting started without a terminal
The desktop app is the easiest way in. Anthropic says it lets you "ask Claude to work on the code in a folder on your computer and review its changes without using a terminal." It runs on macOS and Windows, with Linux in beta, and needs a paid subscription. See Anthropic's desktop quickstart for the current steps.
- Make a working copy. Copy the files you want to work on into a new folder. Never start on the only copy of anything.
- Install the Claude desktop app and sign in with your paid plan, then open the Code tab.
- Choose the folder you just made.
- Pick a careful mode. The mode selector offers Manual, Accept edits, Plan and Auto. Plan has Claude propose changes without editing your files. In Manual mode, the app shows each change as a diff you can accept or reject.
- Start small. Ask for one job from the table above, and ask Claude to list what it will change before it changes it.
- Check the result with the check in the table. If a change is wrong, press Esc twice or run /rewind to restore earlier files and conversation.

Rules for working on your business website
Your website is the one place where a mistake costs you customers. These rules keep a mistake small.
- Work on a copy, never the live site. Use a staging copy or a downloaded copy of the site files.
- Keep a record of every change. Git, a version-history tool, lets you see each change and undo it. Claude Code runs it for you; Anthropic's terminal guide says "You won't need to learn Git yourself."
- Review before anything goes live. Read the list of changes, then look at the changed pages in a browser.
- Publish as a separate step. Don't ask Claude Code to deploy to your live site. Rewind restores files on your computer, but Anthropic notes that actions on remote systems, such as deployments, "can't be checkpointed."
- Keep passwords out of prompts. Never paste a password, card number or API key into a prompt or an instructions file.
- Check facts yourself. Prices, hours, guarantees and anything about your services must be confirmed by you.
Our website security checklist covers the basics that apply whether or not you use AI.
Your data on a Pro plan
Pro and Max are consumer plans under Anthropic's Consumer Terms. Anthropic's data usage page says it will "train new models using data from Free, Pro, and Max accounts when this setting is on (including when you use Claude Code from these accounts)." With the setting on, data is kept for five years; with it off, 30 days. Check the setting in your account before you work with business files.
Team and Enterprise plans fall under Anthropic's Commercial Terms, under which Anthropic does not train models on code or prompts sent to Claude Code unless the customer chooses to share data. If you have staff who will also use it, a Team plan keeps the business on those terms. Anthropic's Consumer Terms say accounts can't be shared, and a Team plan gives each person their own seat.
Where your website lives changes what's possible
Claude Code works on files. That makes some sites easier than others.
- Sites built from files, such as a static site or a custom-coded site in a code repository, are the easiest. Claude Code can edit, build and check them directly.
- WordPress and Shopify keep theme code in files but much of the content in a database or the platform's admin. They take setup first, such as a local copy of WordPress or Shopify's command-line tool for themes.
- Website builders like Wix and Squarespace keep everything on the platform. Wix offers an MCP connection that can create, update and publish sites, so test anything it changes carefully. Squarespace's MCP server lists only read-only domain tools and doesn't edit sites.
If your site lives on a builder and you only need small text changes, the builder's own editor is usually the simpler tool.
When to hire help instead
Claude Code writes real code, which means it can also write real bugs. AI-written changes to anything customers rely on should be reviewed by someone who can read them. Hire, or at least get a review, when the job involves:
- Payments, checkout or anything that touches card data.
- Contact and booking forms, spam filtering or email delivery.
- Analytics and ad tracking, where a quiet mistake breaks your reporting.
- Customer or patient data, or a regulated industry.
- A rebuild, a platform move or a change to many pages at once, where redirects and search rankings are at stake.
- Any job where you don't have the time to review the result properly.
Our comparison of Claude Code versus hiring a developer helps you decide. Wait altogether if you have no copy of your site, no way to undo a change and no one to review. For delegated office tasks that aren't about code, Anthropic's Cowork, on paid plans, may suit you better than Claude Code.
If you do hire, ask how changes are reviewed and who approves what goes live. As one published reference point, eSEOspace's custom projects typically start at $3,000 and its website maintenance plans start at $250 a month with up to 1 hour of dedicated support a month, as of October 2026. Claude plan costs are paid to Anthropic, separately from any developer's fee.
Conclusion
Claude Code is useful to a small business owner today for jobs you can check yourself: reports, clean-up, drafts and small edits on a copy of your site. Start in the desktop app on a Pro plan, work on copies, choose a careful mode, review every change and keep publishing as your own step. When the work reaches payments, forms, tracking, customer data or a rebuild, bring in someone who can review the code. If you'd rather have that work done for you, our Claude Code development team builds and maintains websites with the same review process. More guides are in our Claude Code Guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?
No. Anthropic's terminal guide says "You don't need to know how to code. Describe what you want in plain English, and Claude writes the code for you." You do need to check results, keep copies and know how to undo a change, especially on your website.
Is there a free way to try Claude Code?
Not on the free Claude plan. Anthropic's setup docs say "The free claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code access." The cheapest route is Pro, at $20 billed monthly as of October 2026.
Can Claude Code update my live website by itself?
It can run commands that publish, depending on how your site is set up. Don't let it. Work on a copy, review the changes, and publish yourself. Rewind can restore files on your computer, but it can't undo a deployment.
Can my staff use my Claude account?
No. Anthropic's Consumer Terms say you "may not share your Account login information" or make your account available to anyone else. Each person needs their own plan or a seat on a Team plan, which needs at least two members.
Is my business data safe on a Pro plan?
Check the model-training setting first. On Pro and Max, Anthropic trains new models on your data when that setting is on, and keeps it for five years; with it off, retention is 30 days. Team and Enterprise plans aren't used for training by default.
