GEO and AEO in one minute

People now ask ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot the questions they used to type into a search box. Those tools answer in full sentences and name a handful of sources or businesses. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of becoming one of the sources an AI system draws on and cites. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the closely related work of structuring your content so it can be lifted out as a direct answer. In practice the two overlap heavily, and both sit on top of ordinary SEO rather than replacing it.

The fundamentals are less mysterious than the acronyms suggest. AI systems need to be able to reach and read your pages, understand exactly who you are and what you offer, find clear statements they can quote, and see your business confirmed by sources other than your own website. Nobody can buy or guarantee a place in an AI answer, and each engine works differently, so the job is to make your business the easy, well-supported choice across all of them.

This guide is organized by where you are. If AI search is new to you, start with Learn. If you're ready to improve your own visibility, go to Do. If you're weighing a budget or comparing agencies, skip to Decide.

The short version

Four things every AI system needs from you

The engines differ, and none of them publishes a full recipe. These four needs are the common ground, and most of this guide is about meeting them.

search

Access

AI crawlers and search indexes have to be able to reach and read your pages. A blocked crawler or a page that only renders in the browser can keep good content out of an answer.

layers

Clarity

Your site should say plainly who you are, what you offer, where and for whom. Vague or inconsistent pages leave a system guessing.

book

Quotable answers

Direct answers, definitions, steps, comparisons and prices stated in plain language are easier to lift into a response than long, general copy.

shield

Confirmation

Reviews, listings, press and mentions on sites you don't control back up what your own site says about you.

The order we'd do it in

A GEO plan in eight steps

A sensible sequence for most businesses. Each step links to the guide that covers it.

1

Find out where you stand

Ask the main assistants the questions your customers ask and record the answers. See how to audit your site's AI visibility, or request our free GEO audit.

2

Make sure you can be crawled

Check your robots.txt, firewall and rendering so search and AI crawlers aren't shut out by accident. Start with the technical foundations of GEO.

3

Fix the SEO basics first

For Google's AI features, a page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Search before it can appear. GEO sits on top of that work; see GEO vs AEO vs SEO.

4

State who you are, clearly and consistently

Align your name, services, locations and descriptions across your site and profiles. See building a brand entity.

5

Answer real questions on the page

Rework key pages so each one answers the questions buyers ask, in language that can be quoted. See content AI can quote directly.

6

Add structured data where it fits

Mark up your organization, services, products and FAQs accurately, matching what the page shows. See JSON-LD and AI visibility.

7

Earn confirmation off your site

Reviews, listings, industry coverage and mentions take the longest and can't be rushed. See off-site strategies for GEO.

8

Measure, then repeat

Track AI referrals, citations and the answers themselves on a fixed set of questions, and revisit them on a schedule. See how to measure GEO performance.

Do

Entities, authority and off-site signals

Help AI systems recognize your brand, and get it confirmed by sources other than your own site.

FAQ

Quick answers about GEO and AEO

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is about becoming a source that AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity draw on and cite. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is about structuring content so it can be given as a direct answer. They overlap heavily, and most businesses work on both together.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. AI systems still rely on pages they can crawl, understand and trust, which is what good SEO produces. GEO adds work on clarity, structure, entity information and third-party confirmation on top of that foundation.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
You can buy clearly labeled ads on some platforms, and those can appear next to or inside an AI answer. You can't buy the organic part: the sources and businesses an AI system chooses to cite. No agency can guarantee those either.
How do I know whether AI tools mention my business?
Ask the main assistants the questions your customers would ask and record what they say, then check your analytics for visits referred by AI tools. Our measurement guides above explain how to track both over time.
How long does GEO take?
It varies by engine. Systems that search the live web can reflect changes to your site relatively quickly, while what a model learned in training changes slowly. Expect the technical and content fixes to come first and third-party recognition to build over months.
Do I need a different strategy for each AI engine?
Mostly no. The groundwork is shared: pages that can be crawled, clear information about your business, quotable answers and third-party confirmation. The engines do differ in which crawlers they use and what reporting they offer, which the engine-by-engine guides above cover.
Should I block AI crawlers?
It depends on the crawler. Some collect content for model training, some build a search index and some fetch a page because a user asked. Blocking a search crawler can keep your pages out of that assistant's search answers, so decide crawler by crawler. Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt lists each one by its documented name.
Does schema markup get me into AI answers?
Not on its own. Google says structured data isn't required for generative AI search and that no special markup is needed, while still recommending it as part of your overall SEO, matched to what the page visibly says. Treat it as part of being clear, not as a switch.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
It's optional. llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard, and Google says Google Search ignores these files, so adding one will neither help nor harm you there. It is no substitute for crawlable, well-structured pages.
How do I measure results?
Use the first-party reports first: the Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console, the AI Assistant channel in Google Analytics 4, and the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. Alongside those, keep a fixed list of customer questions and record what the assistants answer over time.
What does GEO cost?
It depends on the size of the site and how much needs fixing. Pricing models include monthly plans with a set number of hours, one-time projects and audits. Our cost guide explains what drives the price, and our pricing page lists eSEOspace's monthly plans.
Can an agency guarantee I'll be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. Nobody outside the AI companies controls what their systems say, and Google's own guidance on hiring help warns against guarantees. An agency can commit to the work and to honest reporting, not to a placement.
Where should a small business start?
Make sure AI crawlers aren't blocked, state clearly on your site who you are, what you do and where, answer your customers' common questions in plain language, and keep your business details consistent everywhere they appear. Our free GEO audit is one way to get an outside view of where to begin.
