Getting a Wix site found in AI search
Getting a Wix site found in AI search

A Wix site can be read by AI search tools without any extra setup. Wix sites are open to AI crawlers by default, and Wix sends each page to the crawler as finished HTML, which matters because, in Wix's words, "Most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. They read only the HTML your server sends." If your pages are published, indexable and say clearly what you do, the technical door is already open.
On top of that, Wix has added a set of tools it groups under "GEO" (generative engine optimization): an AI Visibility Overview that tests whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your site, an automatically generated llms.txt file, reports on AI bot visits, and controls for blocking AI crawlers if you want to. Some of these are measuring tools and some are optional extras. None of them replaces the basics.
Limits and plan requirements below are as of October 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Wix sites are open to AI crawlers by default and are rendered on the server, so crawlers that don't run JavaScript still receive the page content.
- The AI Visibility Overview needs a Premium plan, covers ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and allows up to 5 tests per month with up to 50 stored questions.
- The visibility score is the share of Wix-generated test questions in which your site was mentioned. The questions are not real user searches.
- Wix generates and maintains an llms.txt file for upgraded sites with a custom domain and indexing switched on. Google states you don't need such a file to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
- You block AI crawlers in the Robots.txt Editor. Blocking the wrong one can remove you from AI answers you wanted to be in.
- Wix's own advice for raising the score is to "focus on enhancing your SEO".
How AI search tools reach a Wix site
AI search tools fetch live pages with crawlers, either to build a search index or to answer one person's question on the spot. Three Wix defaults help here:
- Open access. Wix states that its sites are open to crawling by AI engines and search engine bots unless you change that.
- Server-side rendering. Wix builds the HTML of each page on its servers before sending it, so the text is present in the response a crawler receives.
- Self-referencing canonical tags. Every page declares its own preferred URL. Wix notes this also helps AI crawlers pick the primary version when a link carries tracking parameters.
For Google's AI features the rule is simple. Google's documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. So the first job is ordinary indexing. If you haven't connected Search Console yet, start with connecting Wix to Google Search Console.
The AI Visibility Overview
The AI Visibility Overview is Wix's built-in report on how AI platforms talk about your site. You'll find it through the Gen AI Visibility panel in the SEO & GEO section of your site dashboard. It needs a Premium plan.
It works like this. Wix writes a set of questions based on your site description, URL and business name. It sends those questions to an AI platform and checks whether the answer mentions or cites your site. A tab lets you switch between ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
What the report shows
- Site mentions and score. The AI visibility score is the percentage of the questions in which your site was mentioned. A citation counts as a mention.
- Competitors by visibility score. Other businesses that appeared for the same questions.
- Top sources by references. The websites the AI platform drew on.
- Brand perception. How the platform describes your business.
- Traffic from AI platforms. Sessions that arrived from the platform, the last AI bot crawl, and counts of user-triggered queries. User-query data is available for ChatGPT and Perplexity bots only.
- Manage Questions. Where you review and edit the test questions.
Limits to know before you rely on it
| Item | Limit (October 2026) |
|---|---|
| Plan | Premium plan required; limits are the same on every Premium plan |
| New tests | One per day, up to 5 per month |
| Stored questions | Up to 50 |
| Test history | Last 5 results kept |
| Traffic data | Needs at least 50 unique visitors in the last 30 days, otherwise the report shows "Not enough visitors yet" |
| AI credits per test | About 20 to 25 for the default question set, up to 50 to 60 at the maximum |
Tests spend AI credits, and the site owner pays for them even when a collaborator runs the test. Wix's AI Visibility Overview article lists the current rules.
How to read the visibility score
Treat the score as a rough trend line. The questions are generated by Wix, so they are a guess at what people might ask, and Wix says results can differ from what you get by asking the AI platform directly.
That makes the score useful for two things: spotting whether you are mentioned at all for questions about your own business and category, and seeing which third-party sources the platforms lean on.
llms.txt on Wix
An llms.txt file is a plain-text summary of a site written for large language models. It is a proposed convention, and Wix itself describes it as "a proposed standard, not a formal one".
Wix generates and maintains the file for you at yourdomain.com/llms.txt. It contains only publicly available content. The requirements are an upgraded site with a custom domain, and search engine indexing switched on.
- Go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → Go to llms.txt.
- Click View File to read what Wix has generated.
- To change it, choose More Actions → Edit file.
- To opt out, switch off the Use your llms.txt file toggle.
Editing has a cost: once you edit the file, Wix stops updating it automatically until you choose Reset to Default. For most small sites the automatic version is the better choice, because a hand-edited file goes stale the first time you add a service or change a price. Wix documents the details in its llms.txt help article.
Google's guidance on AI features and your website says: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features." Leave the file on, since Wix maintains it for you, but treat it as an extra.
Controlling AI crawlers
If you'd rather keep some or all AI crawlers out, Wix gives you two controls.
Block a crawler in robots.txt
Go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → Robots.txt Editor, click View File, and add a User-agent line and a "Disallow: /" line for each crawler you want to block. Wix's example list in its guide to blocking AI crawlers is CCBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and BingAI. Our guide to the Wix sitemap and robots.txt walks through the editor.
Know which crawler does what before you block it. OpenAI's crawler documentation describes three separate agents: GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train models, OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search results, and ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person's question calls for it. Because those visits are started by a user, OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to ChatGPT-User. OpenAI also says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. A business that wants customers to find it through ChatGPT but doesn't want its text used for training would block GPTBot and leave OAI-SearchBot alone.
Keep one page out of AI answers
For a single page, open the page's SEO panel, go to the Advanced SEO tab and set the Robots meta tag to nosnippet. Google's documentation says nosnippet prevents content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It also removes the text snippet under your normal Google result, so use it on pages where that trade is acceptable.
The caveats
Wix is frank about two limits. Some crawlers ignore robots.txt, so a block is a request and not a lock. And blocking AI crawlers may limit NLWeb, described below.
Seeing which AI bots visit
Wix Analytics includes two SEO reports built from your site's log data: AI Bot Traffic over Time and AI Bot Visits by Page. They show how often AI bots crawl the site "in response to user queries and for training", and which pages they request. Use them to confirm that a robots.txt block did what you intended. We cover these in Wix SEO reports and bot log reports.
Bot visits are not customer visits. To see people who clicked through from an AI tool, look at the Traffic from AI platforms section of the AI Visibility Overview, or set up a channel in Google Analytics using our guide on how to track AI traffic in GA4. For Google specifically, clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the normal Performance report in Search Console, under the Web search type. They are not broken out separately.
NLWeb and the built-in MCP server
Two newer features let AI agents query a site directly, as opposed to crawling it page by page.
- NLWeb is an open-source framework from Microsoft. On Wix you install it at SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → NLWeb → Install NLWeb. It needs an upgraded site with a connected domain. It cannot be disconnected after you install it, although its ASK protocol can be switched off, and it supports only the site's main language. Wix states that NLWeb "does not change how Google, Bing, or other search engines crawl or rank your site".
- MCP. Every Wix site acts as an MCP server by default at your-site.com/_api/mcp. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way for AI assistants to request information from a service. It is free and exposes public information only.
Structured data
Structured data is code, in a format called JSON-LD, that labels what a page is about: a product, an article, an event, a local business. Wix adds preset markup to Wix Stores product pages, Wix Bookings services, blog posts, event pages and CMS dynamic item pages. It also adds Local Business markup to the homepage once a business name and location exist.
Google says there is "no special schema.org structured data that you need to add" for its AI features, and asks that structured data match the visible text on the page. So the goal is accuracy: fill in your business name, address, product prices and availability in Wix so the automatic markup is complete and true. Our guide to schema markup on Wix covers the presets and custom markup.
What actually helps
Here is the order we'd work in, based on what Wix and Google document.
- Make sure pages are indexable. Check that Let search engines index your site is on under SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Settings, and that key pages aren't set to noindex or hidden behind a password.
- Put the important facts in text. Google lists "making sure that important content is available in textual form" among the practices that carry over to AI features. Services, prices, service areas, hours and policies should be written on the page, not locked inside an image or a video.
- Link your pages together. Google also lists making content easy to find through internal links.
- Don't block crawlers by accident. Review robots.txt after any edit, especially if someone added AI blocks in the past.
- Keep business details current in your Google Business Profile, which Google names specifically, and on the third-party sources the AI Visibility Overview shows.
- Then measure. Run the AI Visibility Overview monthly and watch the AI bot reports.
Most of this list is standard SEO. Work through the Wix SEO checklist if you haven't yet.
Conclusion
Getting a Wix site into AI answers is mostly about being crawlable, indexed and clear. Wix handles the rendering and the open access, and gives you tools to measure mentions, watch AI bots and control crawlers. Frequently asked questions
Do I need a paid Wix plan to appear in AI search?
No plan is required for AI crawlers to read a published Wix site, because Wix sites are open to them by default. A Premium plan is required for the AI Visibility Overview, and the automatic llms.txt file needs an upgraded site with a custom domain.
Does an llms.txt file improve my visibility in Google's AI Overviews?
Google says you don't need AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Wix creates the file automatically, so there is nothing to lose by leaving it on, but don't expect it to change your results by itself.
How often can I run a Wix AI visibility test?
As of October 2026 you can run a new test once a day, up to 5 per month, on any Premium plan. Each test uses AI credits, roughly 20 to 25 for the default question set.
Should I block GPTBot on my Wix site?
That depends on your goal. GPTBot collects content that may be used for model training. Blocking it does not block OAI-SearchBot, which OpenAI uses for ChatGPT search results. If you want to be found in ChatGPT search, leave OAI-SearchBot allowed.
