How to connect Wix to Google Search Console

This guide is part of our Wix resource hub: whether Wix fits, what it costs, SEO and speed, security, and guides for moving to or away from Wix.

The quickest way to connect a Wix site to Google Search Console is the SEO Setup Checklist. Go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Setup Checklist, click Get Started, and follow the step that connects your site to Google. Wix verifies the site, creates the Search Console property and submits your sitemap for you.

There's one requirement. Wix states that to connect to Google Search Console, you must have a Premium plan and a domain connected to your site. The domain can be one you bought from Wix or elsewhere.

If you'd rather do it by hand, or the automatic route fails, you can verify with an HTML tag through Wix's Site Verification tool. Both routes are below, along with what to do once you're connected: submitting the sitemap, inspecting URLs, and reading the Google data that Wix shows inside your dashboard.

Key Takeaways

  • Connecting Wix to Google Search Console requires a Premium plan and a connected domain.
  • The automatic route is the SEO Setup Checklist, which verifies the site, creates the property and submits the sitemap to Google.
  • The manual route uses a URL-prefix property and an HTML tag pasted at SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → Site Verification.
  • For manual verification, enter the full https://www version of your address in Search Console.
  • Once connected, Wix shows Google clicks and impressions in the SEO & GEO dashboard and four Google reports in Wix Analytics.
  • Wix's Site Inspection tool pulls from Google's URL Inspection data, with a limit of 2,000 pages per day.

What Google Search Console is, and why connect it

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your site performs in Google Search. It tells you which searches your site appeared for, how many people clicked, which pages Google has indexed, and which it hasn't and why. It's also where Google reports problems, such as pages it couldn't crawl or a manual action against the site.

Verification is the step where you prove to Google that the site is yours. Until you verify, Google won't show you any of that data, and you can't submit a sitemap.

No analytics tool replaces it. Wix Analytics and Google Analytics tell you what visitors did after they arrived. Search Console tells you what happened in Google before they arrived, including the searches where you appeared and nobody clicked.

What you need first

  • A Premium plan and a connected domain. This is Wix's stated requirement for connecting to Search Console. If you're still on a wixsite.com address, upgrade and connect a domain first. See domains on Wix: buying, connecting and DNS.
  • A published site.
  • A Google account you'll keep. Use one that belongs to the business, not a personal account of an employee or contractor who may leave.
  • A homepage that isn't password protected. A protected homepage is one of the documented reasons the connection fails.

Route 1: connect through the SEO Setup Checklist

  1. In your site dashboard, go to SEO & GEO, scroll to Tools and settings and open SEO Setup Checklist.
  2. Click Get Started.
  3. Answer the setup questions: your business or site name, whether you have a physical location or operate online, and a few keyword phrases that describe what you offer.
  4. In the first part of the checklist, complete the step that connects your site to Google. Sign in with your Google account and approve the access request.

When this finishes, Wix has verified your domain, created the Search Console property and submitted your sitemap index to Google. You don't need to resubmit the sitemap when you add pages later, because Wix keeps it updated automatically.

Two things to know about this route. Only site owners and admin collaborators can access the SEO Setup Checklist, so a team member with a narrower role won't see it. And the connection relies on your Google sign-in: if you change your Google password, Wix shows a Reconnect Now prompt to authorize it again.

The checklist also does more than connect Google. We explain the rest in Wix's built-in SEO tools explained.

Route 2: verify manually with an HTML tag

  1. Go to Google Search Console and add a property.
  2. Choose the URL Prefix option and enter your full address, including https://www.
  3. From the verification methods, choose the HTML tag and copy it.
  4. In Wix, go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → Site Verification.
  5. Select Google Search Console, paste the tag and click Save.
  6. Return to Search Console and click Verify.

The Site Verification tool adds the tag to your homepage's header code. Google's tag is a meta tag named google-site-verification. The same tool handles Pinterest, Bing Webmaster, Yandex Webmaster and Naver.

After verifying manually, the Google step in the SEO Setup Checklist may still show as not completed. Wix says you can ignore that. The reverse quirk also exists: a tag added by the SEO Setup Checklist can't be deleted from the Site Verification tool.

Why the full https://www address? Wix's SEO hub explains that Wix URLs follow the https://www format and other variants redirect to it. A URL-prefix property only covers the exact prefix you enter, so entering the version your site actually uses makes sure you see its data. Wix's steps are in its guide to verifying your site with Google Search Console. That guide covers the HTML tag method, so if you prefer another verification method Google offers, check Google's own instructions for it.

After you connect: sitemap and URL inspection

Submitting your sitemap

If you used the checklist, this is done. If you verified manually:

  1. In Search Console, open Sitemaps.
  2. Enter sitemap.xml.
  3. Click Submit.

Your Wix sitemap is a sitemap index that links to separate sitemaps for pages, blog posts, products and other page types, so that one entry covers everything. What's in it, and what's left out, is covered in Wix sitemap and robots.txt.

Inspecting a URL and requesting indexing

When you publish an important new page, or fix a problem on an existing one, you can ask Google to take a look.

  1. In Search Console, paste the page's full URL into the search bar at the top.
  2. Read the result. It tells you whether the URL is on Google.
  3. Click Request Indexing.

Google's documentation says that crawling can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, and that requesting a crawl doesn't guarantee the page will be included. Requesting the same URL repeatedly doesn't speed it up. Wix makes the same point: there's no guaranteed time frame for indexing, and the wait is the same for all websites, not only Wix sites. Google's guidance is in its article on asking Google to recrawl your URLs.

Google data inside your Wix dashboard

Once the connection is in place, some Search Console data appears inside Wix.

Where in WixWhat it shows
SEO & GEO dashboard: Site performance on GoogleClicks and impressions for the last 7, 30 or 90 days
Wix Analytics: Google Search Performance over TimeHow search performance changes over time
Wix Analytics: Top Search Queries on GoogleThe searches your site appears for
Wix Analytics: Top Pages in Google Search ResultsThe pages that appear most
Wix Analytics: Average Position in Google over TimeWhere you appear on average
SEO & GEO: Site InspectionIndex status and details for each page

The Google figures can lag. Wix notes that the most recent 72 hours or so may be missing, so don't read a dip in the last three days as a real drop.

The Wix Analytics SEO section also contains reports that don't come from Google at all, built from your site's own server logs. Those are covered in Wix SEO reports and bot log reports.

Site Inspection

Site Inspection is Wix's view of Google's URL Inspection data across your whole site. For each page it shows the index status, sitemap, crawler type, last crawl date, canonical URLs and rich result status. Pages are grouped as Valid, Warning, Invalid, Excluded or Unspecified.

It needs a connected domain, a published site and Search Console verification. Two limits apply. It can inspect 2,000 pages per day, which is Google's limit, followed by a 24-hour wait. And it shows Google's last indexed version of each page, not necessarily the live page, so a fix you published this morning won't show until Google has recrawled. Wix describes the tool in its Site Inspection overview.

When the connection fails

Wix lists the common reasons the checklist can't connect a site to Google. Work through them in this order:

  1. No domain connected. The site has to be on a paid plan with its own domain.
  2. Wrong Google account. You're signed in to a different Google account than the one you meant to use. Sign out of the others and try again.
  3. A .edu Google account. Wix lists these as a cause of failure. Use a different account.
  4. Password-protected homepage. Remove the protection, connect, then decide whether the page should really be private.
  5. An ad blocker or blocked third-party cookies. Pause the blocker and allow third-party cookies for the connection, or try another browser.
  6. Too many properties. A Google account with more than 1,000 Search Console properties can't add another. This mainly affects agencies.

If none of those apply, use the manual HTML tag route. It doesn't depend on the sign-in flow.

What to check in your first month

A newly verified property can look empty at first while Google gathers data. Once figures appear, these checks are worth a few minutes each:

  • Is the sitemap read successfully? Look under Sitemaps in Search Console.
  • Are your main pages indexed? Inspect the homepage and your top service or product pages.
  • Which pages are excluded, and is that intended? Blog tag and archive pages are noindex by default on Wix, so seeing them excluded is normal.
  • What are people searching? The queries report shows the words people used. It often differs from what owners expect, and it's the best source of ideas for page titles and new content.
  • Any "Crawled - currently not indexed" pages? Wix notes this status means Google crawled the page and chose not to index it. It isn't an error, but a large number of them on pages you care about is a content signal to look into.

Wix also notes that partially loaded page resources reported in Search Console have no impact on your site's SEO, so that message isn't one to chase. If the site isn't appearing at all, work through why your Wix site isn't showing up on Google. For a wider setup list, see our Wix SEO checklist.

Bing and other search engines

Google isn't the only engine with a webmaster tool. The Site Verification tool accepts tags for Bing Webmaster, Yandex Webmaster and Naver, using the same paste-and-save process. Wix's SEO hub also describes a "Connect to Bing" option in the SEO Assistant, which needs a custom domain. On Premium sites, Wix additionally notifies Bing and other participating engines of page changes through IndexNow, with no setup required.

Conclusion

Connecting Wix to Google Search Console takes a few minutes once the site is on a Premium plan with a domain. Use the SEO Setup Checklist for the automatic route, or paste an HTML tag into the Site Verification tool if you need to do it manually. Then make a habit of checking the data: indexed pages, search queries, and anything Google flags. If you'd like someone to turn that data into a plan, eSEOspace offers SEO services for Wix sites. Frequently asked questions

Can I connect a free Wix site to Google Search Console?

Wix states that connecting to Google Search Console requires a Premium plan and a domain connected to your site. Free sites can still be crawled and indexed by Google, but the Wix connection and the tools that depend on it need an upgraded site.

Do I have to submit my sitemap manually?

Not if you connected through the SEO Setup Checklist, which submits the sitemap index to Google automatically. If you verified manually, open Sitemaps in Search Console, enter sitemap.xml and click Submit.

Which Search Console property type should I use with Wix?

For manual verification, Wix's instructions use a URL Prefix property with the full https://www version of your address, verified with an HTML tag.

The checklist still says Google isn't connected after I verified manually. Is something wrong?

No. Wix says that after manual verification the checklist's Google step can stay marked as not completed, and that it can be ignored.

How long until my Wix site shows up on Google?

There's no guaranteed time. Google says crawling can take from a few days to a few weeks, and that a request doesn't guarantee inclusion. Connecting Search Console and submitting the sitemap helps Google find your pages but doesn't set the schedule.

Why does Site Inspection show old information about my page?

Site Inspection shows Google's last indexed version of a page, not necessarily the live one. After you change a page, the report updates once Google has crawled it again.
