Domains on Wix: buying, connecting and DNS explained
Domains on Wix: buying, connecting and DNS explained

You have two ways to put a Wix site on your own domain: buy the domain from Wix, or connect one you bought somewhere else. Either way the site needs a paid plan, because Wix only connects custom domains to upgraded sites. A domain is the address people type, such as yourbusiness.com. It's a separate product from your site plan, with its own yearly renewal.
Most yearly plans come with a voucher that makes a new domain free for the first year. After that it renews at the regular price, which for a .com bought through Wix was shown as $21.35 a year in October 2026. If you connect an outside domain instead, you keep paying your current registrar and choose between two connection methods: name servers, which Wix recommends, or pointing, which is the better choice in a few specific cases covered below.
Key Takeaways
- A site plan doesn't include a domain. Selected yearly and multi-year plans include a voucher for one free year; monthly plans don't.
- The voucher must be redeemed within 2 months of buying the plan and covers the first year only, not privacy or extra years.
- As of October 2026, Wix showed a .com at $7.90 for the first year, renewing at $21.35.
- Name servers move your DNS to Wix; pointing leaves DNS at your current host. Both can take up to 48 hours to take effect.
- With name servers, Wix imports existing MX records automatically, but other email records have to be re-added by hand.
- Domain purchases are non-refundable and aren't covered by the 14-day money-back guarantee.
How domains fit with Wix plans
Three separate things are easy to confuse:
- The site plan (Light, Core, Business, Business Elite, or a Studio plan) pays for hosting and features and lets you connect a custom domain.
- The domain is registered yearly, with Wix or with another registrar.
- Business email at your domain is a third purchase. It's covered in business email on a Wix site.
Without a paid plan, a site lives at a free address in the format siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress. After you connect a domain, that free address still exists and redirects to your domain. Each one is billed and canceled separately, which matters when you tidy up subscriptions; our Wix website cost guide adds the lines together.
The free domain voucher
Wix gives a voucher for one free year of a new domain with the first purchase of selected yearly or multi-year Premium or Studio plans. The rules, from Wix's voucher article:
- Monthly plans don't get one. You do get one if you later change a monthly subscription to yearly.
- It isn't issued on renewal or when you upgrade an existing plan.
- Redeem it within 2 months of buying the plan. (The plans page says 60 days.)
- It covers the first year only. The domain then renews at the regular price.
- It doesn't cover privacy protection or extra years. If you add those at checkout, you're charged for them.
- You enter payment details to claim it, but you aren't charged for the first year.
- It can't renew a domain you already have or be applied to a domain bought before the plan. It can be used when transferring a domain in.
The help center lists eligible extensions including .com, .net, .org, .co.uk, .ca, .biz, .info, .online, .shop, .store and .xyz. The plans page shows a shorter list, and the help center says "selected" plans qualify, so confirm on the checkout screen that your plan and extension are covered. You'll find the voucher on the Premium Vouchers page in your Wix account.
Buying a domain from Wix
- Go to Domains in your Wix account.
- Click Buy a Domain.
- Enter the name you want and click Search.
- Click Get It next to the domain you choose.
- Choose a registration period.
- Enter your contact information. Use an email address you control and will keep.
- Choose a Privacy & Security option.
- Click Submit Purchase.
Wix offers over 400 extensions, and a name can be up to 60 characters. Domains bought from Wix use Wix's name servers automatically, so there's nothing to connect, and Wix states that the name servers of a Wix domain can't be changed. You can still edit individual DNS records.
What domains cost, including renewal
The first-year price is usually a promotion. Budget on the renewal price. These were the published US prices in October 2026, per year, before tax:
| Extension | First year | Renews at |
|---|---|---|
| .com | $7.90 | $21.35 |
| .net | $11.90 | $22.90 |
| .org | $6.90 | $22.90 |
| .online | $6.90 | $40.90 |
| .shop | $6.90 | $40.90 |
| .co | $14.90 | $48.90 |
| .store | $36.00 | $36.00 |
Wix's domain pricing page has the full list. One inconsistency to know about: the price table on that page shows .com at $7.90 for the first year, while the FAQ on the same page says $9.90. The price on your checkout screen is the one that counts.
Other points on billing:
- Wix domains auto-renew, and the charge is taken 30 days before the expiration date.
- Domain subscriptions are non-refundable and don't come with the 14-day money-back guarantee that site plans have.
- To see your own renewal price, go to Premium Subscriptions and click View payment details in the "Upcoming payment" column.
- If a domain expires, there's a grace period of about 30 days to renew at no extra fee, then a redemption period of about 30 days where a fee applies. Some extensions, including .de, .fr and .me, have no grace period.
Privacy protection and DNSSEC
Domain registration records include the owner's contact details. Wix offers three levels at checkout: Public Registration, Private Registration, and Private Registration and DNSSEC. DNSSEC is a security feature that helps stop visitors being redirected to a fake copy of your domain's records.
What Wix's help center says:
- Private registration costs an additional fee and is not refundable. One Wix marketing page describes privacy as included at no extra cost, so don't assume it's free; read the checkout total.
- Even with public registration, newly bought or transferred domains have their email and phone masked with a generic address and number.
- Privacy can't be added mid-term. You add it when buying, or when extending the domain by at least a year.
- Some extensions can't have private registration at all, including .ca, .co.uk, .com.au and .de.
- DNSSEC is sold only bundled with private registration.
That DNSSEC option applies to domains registered at Wix. For a domain registered elsewhere and connected to Wix, the rule is the opposite: turn DNSSEC off at your registrar before connecting.
Connecting a domain you bought elsewhere
If you already own your domain, you don't need to move it. You connect it, and it stays registered where it is. There are two methods.
| Name servers | Pointing | |
|---|---|---|
| Where DNS records are managed | In your Wix account | At your current DNS host |
| Wix's position | Recommended | Not recommended, because Wix can't help inside another host's account |
| What you change | The name servers at your registrar | One A record and one CNAME record |
| Existing email | MX records are imported automatically; other records (CNAME, TXT) must be re-added | Untouched |
| Required for | Email Marketing from your own domain, Wix Multilingual language subdomains, Wix Photo Albums subdomains | None of these |
| Time to take effect | Up to 48 hours | Up to 48 hours |
Connecting by name servers
- Go to Domains and click Add an Existing Domain.
- Choose Connect a domain you already own.
- Pick the site and click Continue.
- Enter the domain and confirm you want to connect it to your site.
- Copy the name server values Wix shows you. They're displayed in your account during setup, so use those and not values from an article.
- Log in to your registrar and replace the existing name servers with the Wix ones.
Before step 6, write down every DNS record you have now, especially anything for email. Wix imports MX records, which route incoming mail, but verification and authentication records have to be added again in Wix.
Connecting by pointing
Start the same way, then choose the manual setup and switch to the pointing instructions. You'll add two records at your DNS host. Wix's template is an A record with host @ and value 185.230.63.107, and a CNAME record with host www and value pointing.wixdns.net. Copy the values shown in your own Wix account in case they differ.
Both records are required. If only one is updated, the site can show a "Not secure" warning. Pointing is the sensible choice when working email depends on records you don't want to rebuild: Wix itself suggests pointing if Microsoft 365 email is already set up.
Things that stop a connection working
Wix doesn't support DNS proxies such as Cloudflare, or DNSSEC on connected outside domains, and to switch methods you remove the domain and add it again. If yours is stuck, work through Wix domain not connecting: causes and fixes.
Subdomains
A subdomain is a prefix on your domain, like shop.yourbusiness.com. On Wix a subdomain can point to another Wix site or to an outside service. The limits:
- The Wix site receiving the subdomain needs its own plan.
- A subdomain can only go to a site's home page, not to an inner page.
- You can't connect business email to a subdomain in Wix.
- The "www" host name is reserved for connecting a Wix site.
The path is Domains → Add an Existing Domain → Connect a domain you already own, then pick the site, enter the subdomain and select I own this primary domain.
Editing DNS records in Wix
DNS records are the instructions that tell the internet where your website and email live. If your domain is registered at Wix or connected by name servers, you edit them in Wix:
- Go to Domains.
- Click the Domain Actions icon next to the domain.
- Select Manage DNS Records.
- Click + Add Record in the section for the record type.
- Enter the values, click Save, then Save Changes.
Wix lists these record types: A, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, SRV and NS. Where a provider's instructions say to use "@" as the host, leave the Host Name field blank in Wix. If your domain is connected by pointing, this screen isn't available; you edit records at your DNS host.
Moving a domain in or out
You can also transfer the registration itself to Wix. That needs a site plan, a domain that isn't locked and an authorization code from your current registrar, and you must buy at least one more year; Wix doesn't charge a separate transfer fee, and remaining time carries over. It takes up to 7 days. Not every extension can be transferred in.
Leaving works the same way in reverse, with a 60-day waiting rule and consequences for your site and email. The steps are in how to transfer a domain away from Wix.
Conclusion
Domains on Wix are simple once you separate the pieces: the plan lets you connect a domain, the domain renews yearly on its own bill, and the connection method decides who manages your DNS. Buy through Wix if you want one login and no setup. Connect by name servers if your domain is elsewhere and you're happy for Wix to hold the DNS. Use pointing when existing email or other services depend on records you'd prefer not to rebuild. Whichever you choose, register the domain in your own name with an email you control. Frequently asked questions
Is a domain free with Wix?
For the first year, with a voucher that comes with selected yearly and multi-year plans. It must be redeemed within 2 months, and the domain then renews at the regular price. Monthly plans don't include the voucher.
How much does a Wix domain cost to renew?
It depends on the extension. As of October 2026, Wix showed .com renewing at $21.35 a year and .net and .org at $22.90, in USD before tax. Your own renewal price is shown under Premium Subscriptions.
Should I use name servers or pointing?
Wix recommends name servers, and they're required for a few features, such as Email Marketing from your own domain. Pointing leaves DNS with your current host and is useful when existing email records are already working.
How long does it take for a domain to connect to Wix?
Up to 48 hours for the DNS change to spread across the internet. The SSL certificate is issued once that's complete.
Can I use Cloudflare with a Wix site?
Wix states that it doesn't support DNS proxies like Cloudflare. Turn proxying off before you connect the domain.
Can I get a refund on a Wix domain?
No. Wix says domain subscriptions are non-refundable and aren't covered by the 14-day money-back guarantee.
