Setting up shipping on Wix Stores

This guide is part of our Wix resource hub: whether Wix fits, what it costs, SEO and speed, security, and guides for moving to or away from Wix.

Shipping on Wix Stores is set up in one place: Shipping, delivery & fulfillment in your site's dashboard. You divide the world into regions, then give each region one or more rules that decide what a customer pays. A rule can be free shipping, a flat rate, a rate based on weight, order price or quantity, or a live rate calculated by USPS.

The first thing to know is the default. A new store starts with two regions, Domestic and International, and both offer free shipping. If you publish without changing them, you ship everything, everywhere, for nothing. Fix that before you take your first order.

The rest of this guide covers each rate type, how to offer free shipping above a threshold, what live carrier rates are available, and how local delivery, pickup and label printing work.

Key Takeaways

  • New stores default to free shipping in both the Domestic and International regions. Change or remove them before launch.
  • Rule types are free shipping, flat rate, rate by weight, rate by price, rate by quantity and USPS calculated rate.
  • Weight, price and quantity rules each allow up to 30 ranges.
  • Built-in live rates are USPS only, for merchants based in the US selling in USD. Other carriers need a third-party app.
  • If a region has no active shipping, delivery or pickup rule, customers there can't check out.
  • US merchants can buy and print USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL Express labels from the Orders tab through Wix Shipping.

How Wix shipping is organized

Three ideas make up the whole system.

  • Regions are where you ship. A region can be one country, a group of countries, or states or provinces within a country. Wix's own example is a region made of California, Oregon and Washington.
  • Rules are what you charge in a region. Different regions can use different rule types.
  • Options are the named choices inside a rule that the customer picks from, such as Standard at $4, Priority at $8 and Overnight at $12.

On top of shipping, each region can also offer local delivery and store pickup. A store that sells only digital products doesn't need any of this.

Set up your shipping regions

  1. Go to Shipping, delivery & fulfillment in your site's dashboard.
  2. Open the Domestic region and replace the default free shipping rule with the rule you want.
  3. Decide what to do with International. If you don't ship worldwide, delete the region, or use Deactivate region to pause it without losing its settings.
  4. To charge different amounts in different places, click + Create Region and choose the countries or states it covers.
  5. Add at least one shipping, local delivery or pickup rule to every region you keep.

Step 5 matters. If a region has no active rule, customers there can't buy. They see a message that the store doesn't deliver to their area.

For each rate you can enter an estimated delivery time, which shows on the checkout page. You can also let shoppers preview rates in the cart by enabling "Shipping & delivery rates" in the Cart Page settings in the editor. Showing the cost early avoids a surprise at the last step.

If you include tax in your product prices, price-based shipping rules use the price without tax.

Free shipping rules

There are three ways to offer free shipping, and they solve different problems.

Free shipping on everything

Use the free shipping rule in a region. This is the default on a new store. It is simple for customers, and it works when your prices already cover the cost.

Free shipping above an order value

Use a rate-by-price rule. You set price ranges and a charge for each. Wix's example is $5 shipping for orders above $50, with orders above $100 shipping free. Because you get up to 30 ranges, you can tier this as finely as you like. If you use USPS calculated rates, the advanced settings have their own option for free shipping over a set amount.

Free shipping for certain customers

Wix does not support shipping rules for specific customers. The workaround is a free shipping coupon, created at Coupons in the dashboard, that you share with the customers or member groups you choose. A free shipping coupon can be limited to orders over a minimum subtotal. These coupons work only with Wix Stores.

Real-time carrier rates

A real-time rate is calculated at checkout from the weight of the order and the customer's address, so the customer pays close to what the carrier charges you.

Built-in: USPS

The only carrier built into Wix Stores for live rates is USPS, and it is available to merchants based in the US selling in USD, except Puerto Rico. The services offered are Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express within the US, and First-Class Package International, Priority Mail International and Priority Mail Express International abroad.

Things to understand before you turn it on:

  • Every product needs a shipping weight. Set it at Products, then select the product and open Inventory and shipping → Shipping weight.
  • The USPS figure is an estimate, and it is also the amount the customer is charged. You are free to ship with any carrier afterward.
  • You can add a rate adjustment, as a percentage or a fixed amount, to cover packaging or handling. Customers don't see it as a separate fee.

Wix documents the setup in its article on live rates with USPS.

Other carriers: third-party apps

Live rates from UPS, FedEx or other carriers require a third-party app. Wix lists Shippo, ShipStation, Envia, Easyship and Shiptheory among the options. ShipStation is currently available only to stores located in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK.

Three cautions from Wix's documentation on shipping apps:

  • A shipping app has to be enabled separately in each region, under Manage Your Apps in that region.
  • If the app can't supply a rate and there is no backup rate or other delivery option, customers cannot check out. Always add a fallback rule.
  • Many shipping apps print labels but do not offer real-time rates. Check which one you are installing.

Apps are usually billed by the app provider, separately from your Wix plan.

Different shipping for different products

Wix has no "per-product rate" rule. The tool for this job is delivery profiles. A delivery profile is a group of products with its own shipping, delivery and pickup rules. Typical uses are heavy items versus light ones, perishable goods, fragile items and oversize products.

When a cart contains products from more than one profile, Wix matches the shipping options by name, and the names are case sensitive. "Standard" and "standard" are treated as different options. You then choose how the charges combine: add the rates from each profile together, or apply only the higher rate.

Keep option names identical across profiles, and test a mixed cart before launch. Mismatched names can leave a mixed cart with shipping options you didn't intend.

Handling fees

A handling fee is an extra charge added to shipping to cover packing time and materials. You set it at Shipping, delivery & fulfillment. If you use USPS calculated rates, the rate adjustment described above does a similar job without showing as a separate line.

Local delivery and pickup

Local delivery

Local delivery is for orders you bring to the customer yourself or by courier. It uses the same rule types as shipping, so you can charge a flat fee, tier it by order value or make it free. You can set a delivery time frame or let customers pick a delivery day from a calendar.

You can create up to 50 local delivery areas per region. Each area is defined in one of four ways: a radius around an address, a list of zip codes, a shape drawn on a map, or selected cities.

Store pickup

Pickup can be the only option you offer or sit beside shipping and local delivery. Multiple pickup locations are supported. When an order is ready, the order's page in the Orders tab has a "Send Pickup Ready Email" action to tell the customer.

Delivery to third-party pickup points, such as parcel lockers, is available only through apps and only in some countries. Wix's documented examples are Boxtal in France and Sendcloud in a list of supported countries.

Printing shipping labels

Wix Shipping lets you buy and print labels inside the dashboard. Wix has partnered with Shippo to provide reduced rates. It is available to merchants in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and the UK. The US carriers are USPS, DHL Express, FedEx and UPS.

  1. Go to Orders in your site's dashboard.
  2. Select an unfulfilled order.
  3. Click Print Shipping Label.
  4. The first time, follow the prompts to set up Shippo. One Shippo account connects to one site.

Note the difference between label printing and live rates. You can print a UPS label through Wix Shipping, but showing a live UPS rate to the customer at checkout still needs an app. Wix does not publish the discount levels, so compare the label price in your dashboard with what you pay today. Details are in Wix's label printing article.

Shipping and tax, subscriptions and dropshipping

A few neighboring topics touch shipping.

  • Tax on shipping. With manual tax, you set a rate for shipping and delivery under Tax for each region. With automatic tax, the tax service decides whether shipping is taxed. See sales tax on Wix Stores.
  • Subscriptions. The shipping fee of the original order is charged on every future subscription cycle. That quirk is explained in selling subscriptions on Wix.
  • Dropshipping. Supplier shipping rates do not sync into Wix. You create the shipping rules yourself. More in dropshipping on Wix.

Test before you launch

  1. Open your live site in a private browser window.
  2. Add a light item and check out with an address in each region you serve.
  3. Repeat with a heavy item, then a mixed cart, then an order just under and just over your free shipping threshold.
  4. Enter an address in a place you don't ship to and confirm the customer is told so.
  5. If you use an app for live rates, confirm the fallback rate appears when you expect it.

An unexpected shipping cost at the last step can cost you the sale. Once your rates are clear, the next step is following up on the carts that still get left, which we cover in abandoned cart recovery on Wix.

Conclusion

Wix Stores shipping is flexible for a small or mid-sized store: regions down to state level, six rule types, tiered free shipping, delivery profiles for awkward products, local delivery, pickup and label printing. The limits are specific. Built-in live rates are USPS only, customer-specific rules aren't supported, and the default settings give away shipping until you change them. Set up regions first, add a rule to every region, and test with real addresses. Frequently asked questions

Why is my Wix store offering free shipping?

New stores start with Domestic and International regions that both default to free shipping. Open Shipping, delivery & fulfillment in the dashboard and replace the rule in each region, or delete the International region if you don't ship abroad.

Does Wix show live UPS or FedEx rates at checkout?

Not on its own. Built-in live rates are USPS only, for US merchants selling in USD. Live rates from other carriers need a third-party app such as Shippo, ShipStation, Envia or Easyship.

How do I offer free shipping over a certain amount?

Create a rate-by-price rule with a range that charges nothing above your threshold. If you use USPS calculated rates, the advanced settings have a separate free-shipping-over-an-amount option.

Can I charge different shipping for one heavy product?

Yes, with delivery profiles. Put the heavy product in its own profile with its own rules, keep the option names identical to your main profile, and choose whether rates are combined or only the higher rate applies.

Why can't a customer check out in a certain state or country?

Wix blocks checkout for a region that has no active shipping, delivery or pickup rule, and tells the customer the store doesn't deliver to their area. Check that the location is included in one of your regions and that the region has at least one active rule.

Can I print shipping labels from Wix?

Yes, if you are in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Spain or the UK. Select an unfulfilled order in the Orders tab and click Print Shipping Label. US carriers are USPS, DHL Express, FedEx and UPS.
