Customizing the Wix checkout: what you can and can't change

By: Irina Shvaya | October 5, 2026
This guide is part of our Wix resource hub: whether Wix fits, what it costs, SEO and speed, security, and guides for moving to or away from Wix.

You can customize more of the Wix checkout than older articles suggest. From Checkout Settings in your site's dashboard you can change its colors, buttons and header, add your logo, add custom fields with conditional rules, show your policies, add a marketing opt-in, set order rules such as a minimum subtotal, and add extra fees. Wix's help center now confirms that checkout design customization is live.

What you can't do is rebuild it. The email, name and delivery fields can't be removed, section and field titles can't be reworded, and the page layout is Wix's. Anything beyond that is developer work using checkout plugins or Wix's Checkout API. This guide covers each setting, the fixed parts, and the changes that tend to matter most for completed orders.

Key Takeaways

  • All checkout settings live in one place: Checkout Settings in the site dashboard, which has a live preview (for Wix Stores).
  • Design options include theme or custom colors, corner rounding, button color and shape, and a header with your business name or logo.
  • Email, first name, last name and delivery details can't be deleted. Phone can be made required or optional.
  • Express buttons are available for PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay, and "Buy Now" skips the cart.
  • Guest checkout is the default. Requiring sign-up is done by restricting the Cart page, and "Buy Now" can bypass it.
  • Turning on authorize-and-capture hides PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and manual payment from the site.

Where the checkout settings live

Go to Checkout Settings in your site's dashboard. The page shows your settings beside a live preview of the checkout, so you can see each change before saving. The preview is available only for Wix Stores; if you sell bookings or pricing plans without a store, you'll need to check changes on the live site.

A checkout is the page where a customer enters their details, chooses delivery and pays. On Wix, the same checkout serves Wix Stores and other Wix business apps, so changes here affect every kind of order your site takes. Wix's checkout customization guide is the reference for every option below.

Design and branding

The design options are the newest part of the checkout. You can:

  • Use your site's theme colors or pick custom ones.
  • Adjust corner rounding on fields and boxes.
  • Set the button color and shape.
  • Show your business name or an uploaded logo in the header, and choose its alignment.
  • Show or hide the "continue browsing" link.

Match the checkout to the rest of the site. A customer who moves from a branded product page to a plain, different-looking payment page has a reason to hesitate. Keep the button color high-contrast against the background so the next step is obvious, and check the result on a phone. Color contrast is also an accessibility matter, covered in our guide to Wix accessibility and the ADA.

Four things can't be deleted: email, first name, last name and delivery (address) details. Around them you have these controls:

  • Phone. Set it as required or optional. Some older Wix help pages say phone can't be made optional; the current guide says it can.
  • Address line 2. Show or hide it.
  • Email field. Add placeholder text and a short description, for example to explain that the receipt goes to this address.
  • Billing address. Show all fields, or choose "Only fields required for payment and tax" to shorten the form.
  • Marketing opt-in. Add a subscription checkbox and choose whether it starts selected or deselected. Email consent rules vary by place; this isn't legal advice, so ask an attorney which default is right for the regions you sell to.

Custom fields

You can add your own fields, including multiple choice and text, to collect things like delivery instructions, a gift message or a purchase order number. Conditional rules let a field appear only when an earlier answer calls for it, so a "gift message" box can show only after someone ticks "This is a gift." Answers appear on the order in the Orders tab.

One caveat: customers who check out with PayPal may not see the custom fields you added. If a field is essential, don't rely on it alone.

Every extra field is one more thing to fill in on a phone. Ask only for what you need to fulfill the order.

Policies and agreement

Store policies, such as returns, shipping and privacy, appear as links in the checkout footer. You can also add an agreement checkbox that customers must tick before paying. Custom policies you create don't appear next to that checkbox, so if you need explicit agreement to a specific document, test how it displays.

The settings control how policies are shown, not what they should say. Have an attorney review the wording of your terms and refund policy.

Express checkout and payment buttons

Express buttons let a customer pay with details already stored in a wallet, skipping most of the form. Wix supports three: PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

  • An Apple Pay or Google Pay button can show on the product page in place of "Buy Now." With PayPal connected as well, three payment buttons show.
  • "Buy Now" sends the customer straight to checkout, skipping the cart.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay can only be used for full payments, not deposits or installments.
  • There is no additional fee for Apple Pay through Wix Payments; normal processing fees apply.

Which buttons you can show depends on your payment provider. Rates for each method are in our guide to Wix Payments fees and payment options.

Authorize now, capture later

Wix Payments can authorize a card at checkout and let you capture the money later, for example when an item ships. It works only for credit card payments, and authorized payments are held for 7 days. The trade-off is significant: with the checkout-level toggle on, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and manual payment are hidden from the site, and partial captures aren't possible. Turn it on only if your fulfillment process needs it.

Guest checkout, sign-up and saved details

Guest checkout is the default, which is what most stores want. If you need customers to sign up first, for a members-only or wholesale store, you restrict the Cart page to members in the editor. You can limit it to all members, a member role or pricing-plan buyers.

Wix notes that this restriction can be bypassed by flows that skip the cart page, such as "Buy Now." If sign-up is truly required, remove those shortcuts from your product pages.

Logged-in members get a faster checkout: saved addresses and, if they opt in, saved cards. Saving cards on file to charge later needs a payment provider that supports it, such as Wix Payments. To remove the login option from checkout entirely, Wix's documented method is deleting the Members Area, which affects the rest of your site, so think that through first.

Order rules, fees, tips and gift cards

Checkout validations. These are rules such as a minimum order subtotal or an item quantity limit. A rule can either warn the customer or block the order.

Minimum order amount. There's also a store-level setting at Settings → Store products & Inventory, using the "Set a minimum subtotal" toggle. Shoppers under the minimum are prompted to add more. The Wix Checkout Requirements app adds minimum and maximum quantity rules.

Additional fees. Fees can be fixed or percentage-based, and each appears as a separate line item. Check your card network and state rules before adding a surcharge for paying by card; that's a legal question, not a settings one.

Tips. The Wix Tips app adds a tip widget to the checkout page, with preset percentages or amounts and an optional custom amount.

Gift cards and promo codes. Once Wix Gift Cards are set up, the gift card code field shows at checkout automatically and can be turned off. The "Enter a promo code" link can be removed too, which is worth considering if you rarely run codes: an empty code box can send shoppers off to search for one.

Receipts and invoices. Receipts can be sent automatically for every payment, and invoices can be created automatically for orders paid online.

Checkout on your own domain

Store owners often ask whether customers stay on their own web address during checkout. Wix's help pages on the checkout don't state the checkout URL behavior, so we won't guess. Check it yourself in two minutes: open your live site in a private browser window, add a product, go to checkout and read the address bar at each step. Repeat with each payment method you offer. Installment providers, for example, send shoppers to the provider's own site to create or use an account.

What Wix does state is that every Wix site gets an SSL certificate automatically, so pages are served over HTTPS.

Going further with developer extensions

If the settings above aren't enough, a developer has three routes:

  • Checkout plugins. Apps can place content into fixed slots on the checkout page, including the header, the top of the page, before the steps, after delivery options, after policies and around the order summary. A plugin can read checkout data such as the current step.
  • Service plugins. These inject custom logic into the existing flow. Wix's examples are custom shipping-rate providers and additional checkout fees. Some are in beta and not available to everyone.
  • A custom checkout. Wix's developer documentation describes building a custom checkout page with the eCommerce Checkout API, and says it can mean "writing many lines of code and creating custom collections."

One note for stores with older custom work: Wix Functions as a separate dashboard no longer creates new functions. New validations and fees are created in checkout settings, and existing functions keep running.

If you need to restructure the whole flow, that's one of the signals covered in signs your store has outgrown Wix.

Changes worth making first

  1. Add your logo and brand colors so the checkout looks like the rest of your site.
  2. Make phone optional unless your carrier or provider needs it, and hide address line 2 if your customers rarely use it.
  3. Turn on the express buttons your payment provider supports.
  4. Link your return and shipping policies in the footer.
  5. Remove the promo code link if you don't use codes.
  6. Place a real test order on a phone and a desktop, as a guest and with each payment method.
  7. Check that abandoned checkouts are being followed up; see abandoned cart recovery on Wix.

Then measure. Changes to a checkout should be judged by completed orders, which means purchase tracking has to be working first.

Conclusion

The Wix checkout is now brandable and reasonably flexible: design, fields, policies, express pay, order rules and fees are all settings you can change without code. Its structure and built-in wording stay fixed, and deeper changes need a developer. For most stores, a short form, visible policies, working wallet buttons and a tested mobile flow matter more than anything a custom build would add. Frequently asked questions

Can I change the colors and logo on the Wix checkout page?

Yes. In Checkout Settings you can set theme or custom colors, corner rounding, button color and shape, and a header showing your business name or an uploaded logo.

Can I remove fields from the Wix checkout?

Only some. Email, first name, last name and delivery details can't be deleted. You can make phone optional, hide address line 2 and reduce the billing address to the fields needed for payment and tax.

Can I edit the text on the checkout page?

Not the built-in section and field titles, according to Wix's help center. You can add placeholder text and a description to the email field and write the labels of your own custom fields.

How do I require customers to create an account before buying?

Restrict the Cart page to members in the editor. Be aware that flows that skip the cart, such as "Buy Now," can bypass the restriction.

Why did my PayPal and Apple Pay buttons disappear?

One documented cause is the authorize-and-capture setting. When it's on at checkout level, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay and manual payment are hidden from the site.

Can I add a minimum order amount?

Yes. Use a checkout validation in Checkout Settings, or the "Set a minimum subtotal" toggle under Settings, then Store products & Inventory.
