Wix SEO settings: titles, descriptions and defaults
Wix SEO settings: titles, descriptions and defaults

Wix sets your title tags and meta descriptions in two layers. The first layer is SEO Settings, where you write one rule per page type, such as "every product page's title is the product name, then the site name". The second layer is the SEO panel on each individual page, product or post, where you can replace the rule with wording written for that page. When both exist, the page-level wording is used.
Out of the box, Wix fills in a title for every page using a pattern like Page Name | Site Name and leaves the meta description blank on most page types. That default is safe but generic. The quickest improvement on most Wix sites is to tighten the patterns for large groups of pages (products, posts, services) and then hand-write titles and descriptions for the handful of pages that bring in the most business.
This guide covers where each setting lives, what the defaults are, and how the less obvious parts work: variables, social share images, robots tags and additional meta tags.
Key Takeaways
- SEO Settings live at SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Settings and hold one set of default rules per page type.
- Default titles follow the pattern Name | Site Name; the homepage title defaults to the site name alone.
- The default meta description is blank for most page types. Wix says an empty meta description "is not an issue", but writing one gives you a say in how the page is presented.
- Individual pages, products, events, blog posts and blog categories can override the pattern. Blog tag pages cannot.
- You can add up to 10 additional meta tags per page or page type, limited to meta and link tags.
- Turning off site-level indexing disables the page-type and per-page indexing switches beneath it.
The two layers: page-type defaults and page-level edits
A title tag is the page name that appears in the browser tab and, usually, as the blue headline of a search result. A meta description is the short summary a search engine may show underneath. Neither appears in the body of your page.
A site with 300 products has 300 title tags to manage. Wix handles this with patterns built from variables. A variable is a placeholder, such as Product Name or Site Name, that Wix swaps for the real value on each page. Change the pattern once and every page of that type updates.
The page-level SEO panel sits on top. Wix lets you override the page-type settings on site pages, product pages, event pages, blog posts and blog category pages. A few page types can only be controlled by the pattern: Pro Gallery Expand Mode pages, blog tag pages and Challenges pages.
Where to find SEO Settings
- Open SEO & GEO in your site dashboard.
- Scroll to Tools and settings and choose SEO Settings.
- Select a page type. Only the page types that exist on your site are listed, so you'll see Blog Posts only if you have Wix Blog.
- On the Customize defaults tab, click Edit next to the setting you want to change.
Each page type has up to five sections: Basics & social share, Page URL (products and posts only), Structured data markup, Robots meta tag, and Additional meta tags. The same screen also holds the site-wide switch Let search engines index your site.
Default patterns by page type
| Page type | Default title pattern | Default meta description |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage | Site name | Blank |
| Main pages | Page Name | Site Name | Blank |
| Wix Stores products | Product Name | Site Name | Blank |
| Wix Stores categories | Category Name | Site Name | Blank |
| Blog posts | Post Name | Site Name | Blank |
| Wix Bookings services | Service Name | Site Name | The service description |
| Wix Events | Event Name | Site Name | The event description, then the teaser |
| CMS dynamic item pages | Primary Field | Site Name | Blank |
Wix lists every default in its default settings for SEO patterns article. A page's default name is "based on the first name you gave your page", which is why a page first saved as "New Page" or "Copy of Home" can carry that into its title until you fix it.
Wix notes that audit tools often flag an empty meta description and that this "is not an issue", because search engines like Google will create a description for the page. That's true, and a written description is still worth the effort on pages that matter: it's your chance to choose the summary.
Editing a pattern with variables
Say your store sells handmade candles in Austin and every product title currently reads "Lavender Jar | Wick and Co". You might want the category or a short qualifier in there.
- Go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Settings and select the product page type.
- On Customize defaults, click Edit beside Basics & social share.
- In the title field, type any fixed words and click + Add Variable to insert placeholders.
- Do the same for the meta description if you want a pattern there, for example the product name followed by a fixed sentence about shipping.
- Save.
The list of available variables depends on the page type, so check what + Add Variable offers before you plan a pattern. Dynamic item pages draw their variables from the fields in your CMS collection, which we cover in SEO for Wix CMS dynamic pages.
Resetting
To reset one field, delete its content and save. To reset a whole section, click Edit, use the Reset to Wix Default icon, and save.
The per-page SEO panel
The panel's location depends on which Wix editor your site uses.
| Editor | Path |
|---|---|
| Wix Editor | Pages & Menu → More Actions → SEO basics |
| Wix Studio Editor | Pages → More Actions → SEO Basics |
| Wix Harmony | Page dropdown → More Actions → SEO and accessibility → SEO |
The panel has three tabs:
- Basics: the URL slug (the last part of the page's address), the title tag, the meta description, and the toggle that lets search engines index the page.
- Advanced SEO: structured data, the robots meta tag, and additional tags, including the canonical tag.
- Social share: the title, description and image used when the page is shared.
Products, blog posts, bookings services and events have the same panel inside their own editing screens. For a blog post, for example, open Blog in the dashboard, click Edit next to the post and go to the SEO tab.
Changing the URL slug is a bigger decision than changing a title, because the address itself moves. Read Wix URL structure explained before you touch it.
On multilingual sites, the patterns in SEO Settings apply to all languages automatically, and titles, descriptions and slugs can be set per language on individual pages.
How long titles and descriptions should be
Wix's guidance in the SEO panel for products and categories is a title of at most 60 characters and a meta description of at most 156 characters. Wix's help pages are not fully consistent on the description figure, so treat these as sensible targets and not as hard limits. Put the words that matter most at the start, where they are least likely to be cut off.
Two practical points:
- The Site Name variable counts toward the length. A long business name can push every title over the target, in which case shorten the pattern or drop the site name from long page types.
- Search engines can rewrite what they show. Wix notes that title and description edits don't appear until Google recrawls the page, and that Google may display its own choice of title or description.
On a Premium plan, Wix can draft these for you. The AI Text Creator offers three title and three description suggestions inside the SEO panels of Wix apps and the Edit by Page tabs. We look at it alongside the other helpers in Wix's built-in SEO tools explained.
Social share settings
When someone shares a link on Facebook, LinkedIn or a messaging app, the preview is built from Open Graph tags, written og:title, og:description and og:image. On Wix:
- og:title and og:description default to your title tag and meta description.
- og:image is empty unless you set a site-wide social image. Product pages use the product image, and dynamic item pages use the collection's primary image.
- For X (formerly Twitter), you choose a Large or Small card. Large is the default, except on member profile pages. The X title, description and image default to the Open Graph values.
The most common gap is the missing image. If your homepage and service pages share without a picture, set a site-wide social image, then override it on pages that deserve their own.
Robots meta tag and indexing switches
The robots meta tag tells search engines whether to index a page and how to present it. Wix exposes it at three levels:
- Site: SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Settings, the Let search engines index your site toggle. Turning it off asks you to confirm with Hide Site.
- Page type: in SEO Settings, under Basics & social share for that type, a toggle that applies to every page of the type.
- Page: the Let search engines index this page toggle on the Basics tab of the page's SEO panel.
The levels cascade downward. If site-level indexing is off, the page-type and per-page options are disabled. The toggle writes a robots tag of either index or noindex into the page.
Some pages start as noindex on purpose: blog tag pages, blog archive pages and member profile pages are not indexed by default. That is usually what you want, since these pages mostly repeat content that lives elsewhere.
For bulk changes, open the page type in SEO Settings, switch to the Edit by Page tab, tick the pages, and use Set indexable status. Bulk indexing changes currently cover main pages and blog posts only. If a page you expect to see in Google is missing, our troubleshooting guide on why a Wix site isn't showing up on Google goes through each switch.
Additional meta tags and structured data
Every Wix page carries a set of default tags: canonical, og:type, og:url and og:site_name. Blog posts add author and publish-date tags, and products add availability, price and currency.
You can add your own in the Advanced SEO tab or, for a whole page type, in SEO Settings under Additional meta tags. The rules, from Wix's guide to customizing your SEO settings:
- Up to 10 additional tags.
- Only meta and link tag types.
- You can't duplicate a tag Wix already creates.
Anything outside those rules, such as a script, has to go through Custom Code, which requires a published site with a connected domain. Site verification tags for Google, Bing and others have their own tool, covered in our guide to connecting Wix to Google Search Console.
The canonical tag is editable here too. Wix recommends leaving the default, and so do we in most cases. See canonical tags and duplicate content on Wix before changing one.
Structured data has its own section. Wix supplies preset markup for store products, bookings services, blog posts, events and dynamic item pages, and lets you add custom JSON-LD: up to 5 markups per page or per SEO setting including the preset, each under 7,000 characters. Wix Customer Care does not help with structured data changes, so test anything custom. Our guide to Wix schema markup has the details.
Conclusion
Wix SEO Settings give you a rule for every page type and an override for every important page. Use patterns to cover the bulk, write the pages that matter by hand, add a social share image, and leave the advanced tags alone unless you know why you're changing them. If you'd like the patterns, titles and descriptions planned and written for you, our Wix website services team can do it. More guides are in our Wix hub.
Frequently asked questions
Why does every page title on my Wix site end with my site name?
The default pattern for most page types is the page's name followed by the site name. You can change or remove the Site Name variable for each page type under SEO & GEO, Tools and settings, SEO Settings.
Does a page-level title override the SEO Settings pattern?
Yes, for site pages, products, events, blog posts and blog categories. A few page types, including blog tag pages, can only be controlled by the pattern.
Is it a problem that my Wix meta descriptions are blank?
Wix says an empty meta description is not an issue, because search engines will create one for the page. Writing your own on important pages lets you choose the summary, though a search engine may still show different text.
Why hasn't Google updated the title I changed?
The change appears only after Google recrawls the page, and Google may choose to display its own version of a title or description. You can request indexing for the page in Google Search Console.
Can I add any meta tag I want to a Wix page?
You can add up to 10 additional tags per page or page type, limited to meta and link tags, and not duplicating tags Wix already creates. Other code goes through Custom Code, which needs a published site with a connected domain.
