SEO for Wix CMS dynamic pages
SEO for Wix CMS dynamic pages

A Wix CMS dynamic page is one page design that produces many live pages, one for each row in a content collection. Because you don't edit those pages one by one, their SEO is controlled by rules: a URL pattern, a title pattern and a description pattern, each filled in from the fields of your collection. Get the fields and the patterns right and every item page gets a unique address, title and description automatically.
Out of the box, Wix gives each item page a URL of the form yourdomain.com/collection-name/primary-field, a title of Primary Field | Site Name, a blank meta description, a self-referencing canonical tag and a place in an automatically generated sitemap. That's a workable start. The usual problems come later: titles that are just a name, a hundred pages with a few dozen words each, and URLs that change when someone edits a field.
Limits below are as of October 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Default URLs are /collection-name for a dynamic list page and /collection-name/primary-field for a dynamic item page.
- URL variables must come from Text or Number fields, and two items that produce the same URL value will share one page.
- Dynamic item pages have their own entry in SEO Settings, with variables drawn from your collection's fields. Dynamic list pages are edited as main pages.
- Changing an item's slug redirects the old URL automatically only if the site has a connected domain. Without one, the old URL returns a 404.
- CMS collections hold 1,500 items on Light, 4,000 on Core, 20,000 on Business and 10,000,000 on Business Elite.
- Wix recommends at least 250 to 400 words on a page; thin item pages can be treated as soft 404s.
How dynamic pages work
The Wix CMS (content management system) stores content in collections. A collection is a table: each row is an item, such as one team member, and each column is a field, such as name, role, bio and photo.
You then connect a page design to the collection. There are two kinds:
- A dynamic list page shows many items at once, like a team directory or a project gallery.
- A dynamic item page shows one item in detail. Wix generates a separate URL for every item from the same design.
Add a row to the collection and a new page exists. That efficiency is the appeal, and it's also why SEO for these pages is about the template and the data, not about individual page edits. One limitation to know: a dynamic page cannot be your homepage.
The CMS is not available in every Wix editor. As of October 2026 Wix lists the CMS among the features not yet in the Wix Harmony Editor, so dynamic pages are a Wix Editor and Wix Studio feature. Our comparison of Wix Studio and the Wix Editor covers the differences between those two.
URL patterns for list and item pages
The defaults are:
| Page | Default URL | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Dynamic list page | yourdomain.com/collection-name | yourdomain.com/team |
| Dynamic item page | yourdomain.com/collection-name/primary-field | yourdomain.com/team/dana-lee |
You change the URL slug structure in the SEO tab of the dynamic page's settings in the editor, not in the SEO dashboard. This is different from store products and blog posts, whose prefixes are changed in SEO Settings. We explain that distinction in Wix URL structure explained.
The rules Wix applies
- Field types: URL variables must be Text or Number fields.
- Formatting: slug values are lowercased, and spaces are replaced with dashes.
- Uniqueness: if several items produce the same Page Link value, they share one page. Two team members named Chris Park would land on one URL unless you add something that tells them apart.
- Conflicts: two slug structures conflict if they share a prefix and have the same number of variables. The CMS will not save a conflicting structure.
- Per-item edits: an individual item's slug can be edited in the collection's Page Link field.
Wix documents these in its guide to creating unique dynamic page URLs.
Choosing a good URL field
Pick a field that is unique, stable and readable. A name or title works when it's unique. If it isn't, create a dedicated text field, call it something like "URL slug", fill it in by hand for each item, and use that as the variable. A dedicated field also protects you from the most common accident: someone corrects a typo in a title and unknowingly changes the page's address.
What happens when an item's URL changes
If the site has a connected domain, Wix redirects the old item URL to the new one automatically when a slug changes. Without a connected domain, the old URL returns a 404 error.
Automatic redirects appear in the URL Redirect Manager with an "Auto redirect" label, where you can edit or delete them. Check the manager after any bulk change to a collection, especially an import that overwrites the field your URLs are built from. Our guide on how to set up 301 redirects on Wix covers the manager, including group redirects for changing a whole prefix.
If you are moving another site onto Wix and want old URLs to land on dynamic item pages, test early. Wix's migration guide carries a one-line note that it is not possible "to redirect to a blog page or list item". It doesn't say what counts as a list item, and Wix's main redirect article doesn't repeat the restriction, so confirm on a few URLs that your redirects resolve the way you expect before you build a full redirect list.
Titles, descriptions and social images
Dynamic pages are handled in two places in SEO Settings:
- Dynamic list pages are edited under Main Pages, like any other regular page.
- Dynamic item pages have their own entry, one per dynamic page, with variables taken from the fields in the connected collection.
The defaults for an item page are a title of Primary Field | Site Name, a blank meta description, a social share image taken from the collection's primary image, and a canonical tag pointing to the page's own URL.
Setting the patterns
- Go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → SEO Settings.
- Select the entry for your dynamic item page.
- On the Customize defaults tab, click Edit next to the title and description settings.
- Type any fixed words and use + Add Variable to insert collection fields.
- Save, then open two or three live item pages and check the result in the browser tab.
A title of just "Dana Lee | Northside Dental" says who but not what. If the collection has a role field, a pattern of name, then role, then site name gives "Dana Lee, Pediatric Dentist | Northside Dental", which is more useful to a searcher and built entirely from data you already have.
Add SEO fields to the collection
Because patterns draw on collection fields, the most flexible setup is to add two text fields to the collection, one for an SEO title and one for a meta description, and point the patterns at them. You then write a specific title and description for each item in the same table where you manage the content. It takes longer than a formula, and it's the closest thing to hand-written page SEO that a dynamic page allows. For how patterns and page-level edits work across the rest of the site, see Wix SEO settings: titles, descriptions and defaults.
In Wix Studio, page variants inherit the SEO settings of the dynamic page and cannot be configured separately.
Structured data
Wix includes a preset structured data markup for dynamic item pages, and you manage it from the Structured data markup section of the same SEO Settings entry. You can preview the preset, switch it, exclude it or convert it to custom markup. Custom markup must be JSON-LD, under 7,000 characters each, with up to 5 markups per SEO setting including the preset.
Custom markup can use the same collection variables, which is how you'd output, say, a Person or a LocalBusiness description filled in per item. Whatever you output has to match what is visible on the page. Our guide to Wix schema markup covers choosing a type and testing it.
Sitemaps and indexing
Wix adds dynamic pages to your sitemap automatically. Each dynamic page gets its own child sitemap, named in the form /dynamic-prefix-name-sitemap.xml, listed in the sitemap index at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. New items appear without any action from you. See Wix sitemap and robots.txt for how the index is organized.
To keep every item of a collection out of search, use the page-type indexing toggle or the Robots meta tag section for that dynamic page in SEO Settings. This is the right choice for collections that exist for site functionality and not for visitors arriving from search, such as internal resources.
To check what Google has indexed, use Site Inspection under SEO & GEO → Tools and settings, which shows index status page by page for up to 2,000 pages a day.
Avoiding thin and duplicate item pages
This is where most dynamic page SEO is won or lost. A collection makes it trivially easy to publish 300 pages. It does not make those pages worth indexing.
Wix's own troubleshooting guidance says pages with too little content may return a soft 404, which is Google's term for a page that loads but looks empty or missing, and recommends "at least 250-400 words on the page". An item page showing a name, a photo and one line falls well short.
Practical ways to give item pages substance:
- Add real fields. A rich-text description, specifications, a location, a price range, an FAQ. Each field you connect to the design adds unique text to every page.
- Don't pad with boilerplate. The same three paragraphs on every item page add word count without adding anything unique.
- Link to item pages. The list page should link to every item, and related pages elsewhere on the site should link to the relevant ones.
- Be selective. If some items will never have enough content, consider whether they need item pages at all, or set that dynamic page to noindex and let the list page carry the topic.
- Watch near-duplicates. Location collections are the classic case: fifty city pages that differ only in the city name. Each needs genuinely local content to justify itself.
Leave canonical tags at their self-referencing default unless you have a specific duplicate to resolve.
Collection limits by plan
Your plan caps how much the CMS can hold. As of October 2026:
| Plan | CMS items | Database storage |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 1,500 | 10 GB |
| Core | 4,000 | 10 GB |
| Business | 20,000 | 10 GB |
| Business Elite | 10,000,000 | 100 GB |
Wix Studio plans follow the same steps for items: 1,500 on Basic, 4,000 on Standard, 20,000 on Plus and 10,000,000 on Elite, according to the Studio pricing page. Each item can be up to 512 KB. Collections that belong to Wix apps, such as Stores, Bookings, Events and Blog, do not count toward these limits. Wix publishes the figures in its article on collection storage limits and quotas.
There is also a page quota: Wix documents up to 298 pages on a site, including up to 100 static pages, and the URLs generated for dynamic items do not count toward it. A directory with thousands of items is therefore possible on a page count that would be impossible with static pages. For the rest of what each plan includes, see Wix plans compared.
Conclusion
Dynamic pages let a Wix site scale to hundreds or thousands of pages from one design, and their SEO comes down to three things: stable URLs built from a dedicated field, titles and descriptions driven by good collection fields, and enough unique content on each item to deserve indexing. Wix takes care of the sitemap, canonical tags and redirects when a domain is connected. Frequently asked questions
Can I change the URL of a Wix dynamic page?
Yes. The slug structure is edited in the SEO tab of the dynamic page's settings in the editor, and an individual item's slug can be edited in the collection's Page Link field. Variables in the URL must be Text or Number fields.
Do Wix dynamic pages appear in the sitemap?
Yes. Wix creates a separate child sitemap for each dynamic page and lists it in the sitemap index at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Items set to noindex may not appear.
Can I write a different title for each dynamic item?
Yes, by using collection fields as variables. Add a text field for the SEO title to your collection, fill it in for each item, and use that field in the title pattern for the dynamic item page in SEO Settings.
How many dynamic pages can a Wix site have?
Dynamic item URLs do not count toward the site's page quota. The practical cap is the CMS item limit for your plan, which as of October 2026 runs from 1,500 items on Light to 10,000,000 on Business Elite.
Why aren't my dynamic item pages being indexed?
Check that indexing is on for the site and for that dynamic page, then look at the content. Pages with very little text can be treated as soft 404s, and Wix recommends at least 250 to 400 words on a page. Internal links to the item pages also help search engines find them.
