How to set up 301 redirects on Wix

By: Irina Shvaya | October 5, 2026
This guide is part of our Wix resource hub: whether Wix fits, what it costs, SEO and speed, security, and guides for moving to or away from Wix.

To set up a 301 redirect on Wix, open your site dashboard and go to SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → URL Redirect Manager. Click + New Redirect, choose Single redirect, enter the old path, pick the new page and save. The redirect takes a few minutes to start working.

Two conditions apply before any of that works. The site has to be on a paid plan with a custom domain connected, because Wix states that 301 redirects only work with custom domains. And a site can hold a maximum of 5,000 redirects, as of October 2026.

The same tool handles group redirects (one rule that moves a whole folder of URLs) and CSV imports of up to 500 redirects per file.

Key Takeaways

  • Redirects are managed at SEO & GEO → Tools and settings → URL Redirect Manager, and need a paid plan plus a connected domain.
  • A Wix site can have a maximum of 5,000 redirects. A CSV import carries up to 500 redirects per file, so large lists go in as several files.
  • A group redirect swaps one path prefix for another (for example /products/ to /product-page/). It can't send a group of pages to a single page or to another domain.
  • The homepage can't be the source of a redirect in the URL Redirect Manager, and neither can a URL containing #.
  • Wix creates automatic 301s when you change most page URLs, but not for Wix Blog pages.
  • Deleted redirects can't be recovered, so export a CSV backup before a cleanup.

What a 301 redirect does, and when you need one

A 301 redirect is a permanent forwarding rule. Anyone who requests the old URL is sent to the new one, and search engines learn to replace the old address with the new one.

You need one whenever a URL that people or search engines already know stops existing:

  • You changed a page's slug or deleted a page.
  • You moved to Wix from another platform and the old URLs don't match the new ones.
  • You merged two pages into one.
  • You changed domain names.

Without a redirect, the old URL returns a 404 "not found" error, and any links pointing at it lead nowhere.

What you need before you start

Wix's documentation is direct about the requirements. In its words: "301 redirects only work with custom domains. You can't set up a 301 redirect from free Wix URLs to a Premium site." Its migration guide adds that you must upgrade the site with a Premium plan and connect a domain to set up URL redirects.

So if your site still lives on a wixsite.com address, redirects aren't available yet. Upgrade and connect the domain first. Our guide to domains on Wix covers the connection options.

It also helps to know which redirects Wix has already made for you. When you change the slug of an editor page, a Wix Stores product, a Bookings service, an Online Program or a Wix Events page, Wix adds a 301 automatically and labels it "Auto redirect" in the manager. Wix Blog pages are the exception: no automatic redirect is created, so every blog slug change needs a manual one. The details by page type are in Wix URL structure explained.

How to set up a single redirect

  1. Go to SEO & GEO in your site dashboard, scroll to Tools and settings and open URL Redirect Manager.
  2. Click + New Redirect and choose Single redirect.
  3. Under Old URL, enter the old path, for example /about-us.
  4. Under New URL, start typing the slug of the new page and select it from the drop-down. To send visitors to a page on another website, enter the full URL instead.
  5. Click Save, or Save & Add Another to keep going.

To change a redirect later, hover over it, click Edit, update the old or new URL and click Save Changes. The View Redirect icon opens the destination in a new tab, which is a quick way to confirm it points where you expect.

Three limits apply to single redirects:

  • A source URL containing # can't be used.
  • The homepage can't be the source of a redirect. To forward an entire old domain, use domain-level redirection (covered below).
  • Deleted redirects can't be recovered.

How to redirect a whole folder with a group redirect

A group redirect is the closest thing Wix has to a wildcard. It redirects related URLs that share the same path. If your old store kept products at /products/product-name and Wix puts them at /product-page/product-name, one group redirect handles every product, as long as the product slugs match.

  1. Open the URL Redirect Manager.
  2. Click + Create New Redirect and choose Group redirect.
  3. Enter the Old URL Path, for example products.
  4. Enter the New URL Path, for example product-page.
  5. Click Save & Close.

Group redirects show a "Group" label in the list. They are a path swap and nothing more. According to Wix's group redirect article, you can't:

  • use spaces in either path;
  • reuse a path that already appears in another redirect, single or group;
  • redirect from the homepage;
  • create a group redirect to an external domain;
  • redirect a group of pages to a single page.

That last point matters after a migration. If you want every URL under /old-services/ to land on one new Services page, a group redirect won't do it. You need a single redirect for each old URL, which is what the CSV import is for. Wix's help articles don't document any pattern-matching syntax, such as asterisks or regular expressions, so plan around the path swap alone.

How to import redirects from a CSV file

For anything more than a dozen redirects, a spreadsheet is faster and easier to check.

  1. Open the URL Redirect Manager.
  2. Click More Actions and choose Import redirects.
  3. Download the template if you want a starting point, then prepare your file: the first row holds the column headers, each following row is one redirect, and there are exactly two columns, the old URL and then the new URL.
  4. Click Upload CSV File and select the file.
  5. Choose what to import: New redirects (URLs with no redirect yet), Existing ones (URLs that already have a redirect), or both. Existing redirects are not overridden unless you switch that toggle on.
  6. Finish the import and review the result.

Each file can include a maximum of 500 redirects. Wix's import article says anything listed beyond that limit will not be imported, so split a longer list into several files. The site-wide cap of 5,000 still applies across all of them.

If some rows fail, download the CSV report. It mirrors your file with added status columns showing what went wrong. The common errors Wix names are an empty or wrongly formatted file, a redirect that already exists for a URL, and a site that isn't connected to a domain.

The same menu exports. Go to More Actions → Export redirects (optionally tick specific redirects first) and a CSV downloads. To edit many redirects at once, export, change the file and import it again.

Loops and conflicts

A redirect loop happens when two rules point at each other. Say /about already redirects to /about-us, and you then create /about-us to /about. A visitor would bounce between the two forever. Wix blocks this: creating the second redirect shows an error message. The fix is to delete the original redirect, then create the one you want.

A conflict is different. It happens when Wix tries to create an automatic redirect for a page that you've already redirected manually. You get a notification, and in the URL Redirect Manager you click Retry and choose either Update Redirect or Keep Existing Redirect.

Wix documents loops but not chains, where A redirects to B and B redirects to C. When you change a URL for a second time, edit the older redirects so they point straight at the final address.

Redirects after a migration to Wix

Wix's own migration advice is the right starting point: create new pages with URLs that match the old site, and add redirects only where the URLs can't match.

Where they can't match, work from a redirect map: a spreadsheet with every old URL in one column and its closest new equivalent in the other. That spreadsheet becomes your CSV import. Our guide to building a 301 redirect map for a website migration explains how to assemble one.

A few Wix specifics to plan for:

  • Fixed prefixes. Blog posts sit under a prefix that can be renamed but not removed, so a blog that used to live at /blog/post-title needs a redirect for every post. A group redirect may cover this in one rule if the post slugs are unchanged; otherwise use a CSV of single redirects. Wix's migration guide carries a note that it is not possible "to redirect to a blog page or list item," while its main redirect article tells you to create manual redirects for Wix Blog pages and names blog posts as a use for group redirects. Test a few blog redirects before you import the full list.
  • Indexing while you build. Wix recommends switching off "Let search engines index your site" while you build, then switching it on when you publish. Put that on your launch checklist so it isn't left off.
  • Changing domains. To forward an old domain, add it to your Wix account, assign it to the site and choose "Redirect it to the primary domain." Any additional domain connected to a site redirects to the primary one.
  • The old homepage. The homepage can't be a redirect source, so the domain-level redirect above is how the old homepage reaches the new one.

If the move is part of a redesign, our guide to redesigning a Wix site without losing rankings covers the rest of the process.

Redirects on multilingual sites

If you use Wix Multilingual, the URL Redirect Manager gains a language drop-down, and redirects are created, imported and deleted per language. Three rules apply. Redirects only work between pages in the same language, not across languages. The new URL can't contain the ?lang= parameter. And deleting a language deletes all the redirects connected to it. More on language URLs in Wix Multilingual and hreflang.

How to test your redirects

  1. Type the old URL into your browser's address bar. You should land on the new page with the new address showing. Wix notes that the domain must be properly connected, otherwise the redirect doesn't function.
  2. Spot-check a sample from every batch you imported, including a few from the end of the file.
  3. Use the Response Status over Time report in Wix Analytics to see how many requests return 3XX redirects and 4XX errors. We explain it in Wix SEO reports and bot log reports.
  4. Watch Google Search Console. A "Redirect error" status there can mean a loop or a redirect pointing at a broken URL.

Conclusion

Redirects on Wix are handled in one place, the URL Redirect Manager, with three tools: single redirects for individual pages, group redirects for swapping one folder name for another, and CSV imports for long lists. Keep the limits in mind (5,000 per site, 500 per file, no homepage source, custom domain required), check blog slug changes by hand, and test after every batch. Frequently asked questions

Can I create 301 redirects on a free Wix site?

No. Wix states that 301 redirects only work with custom domains, and that you can't redirect from a free Wix URL. Upgrade the site and connect a domain first.

How many redirects can a Wix site have?

A maximum of 5,000 redirects per site, as of October 2026. CSV imports are limited to 500 redirects per file, so a large list has to be split across several files.

Does Wix support wildcard redirects?

Wix offers group redirects, which replace one path prefix with another for every URL under it. They can't send a group of pages to a single page or to an external domain, and Wix's help articles don't describe any regular expression or asterisk syntax.

Can I create a 302 (temporary) redirect on Wix?

Wix's help articles for the URL Redirect Manager describe 301 redirects only. Developers can return a 301 or 302 from Velo router code, but that is custom development, not a dashboard setting.

How long does a Wix redirect take to work?

Wix says a new redirect takes a few minutes to take effect. If it still fails, check that the domain is properly connected.

Can I redirect my homepage on Wix?

Not through the URL Redirect Manager. The homepage can't be the source of a single or group redirect. If you're moving from another domain, connect the old domain and set it to redirect to your primary domain.
