Redesigning a Wix Site Without Losing Your Rankings

By: Irina Shvaya | September 22, 2026

Redesigns are where hard-won search traffic quietly disappears. The design gets signed off, the site goes live, and six weeks later traffic is down forty percent and nobody can say which change did it. Here is how to avoid that on Wix.

Before you change anything: write down what you have

You cannot protect what you have not measured. Export, from Google Search Console, the pages and queries bringing traffic over the last twelve months. Note your top twenty pages by clicks. Screenshot your Core Web Vitals. This baseline is the only way to tell afterwards whether a drop is your redesign or the season.

Keep the URLs you can

The single biggest cause of redesign traffic loss is changed URLs with no redirects. If a page is ranking, its URL is an asset. Do not "tidy" slugs on pages that already earn traffic; there is no tidiness dividend that outweighs the ranking.

Map every URL you cannot keep

Where a page genuinely has to move or merge, set a 301 to the closest equivalent. Wix supports redirects in its SEO tools. Rules that matter: one hop, not a chain; closest match, not the homepage; and do it at launch, not next week.

Do not lose the words

The second biggest cause is subtler. Modern redesigns tend to be visually lighter — bigger images, less text — and pages that ranked on 900 words of substance come back with 200 words and a hero video. The page looks better and ranks worse.

If you are cutting copy from a page that ranks, know what it ranked for and make sure the new version still answers that. Design and substance are not actually in conflict; they just need someone holding both.

Keep the technical setup

Titles, meta descriptions, schema and image alt text are attached to pages, and rebuilding pages is how they get lost. Check every one of your top twenty pages after launch. Our Wix SEO checklist is a usable post-launch audit list too.

Launch deliberately

  • Publish, then immediately recrawl your own site and look for broken internal links.
  • Resubmit the sitemap in Search Console.
  • Watch the coverage report for two weeks; new "not found" or "redirect error" entries are your missed redirects.
  • Compare against the baseline at four and eight weeks, not on day three — rankings fluctuate after any significant change.

If the redesign is really a platform move

Everything above applies double when you are also changing platform, because URL structures rarely map one to one. That is a migration, and we have written up the routes we run from Wix — to WordPress and to Next.js most often. If you are staying on Wix, our Wix website services cover the redesign with the SEO protection built in rather than bolted on afterwards.
