Wix vs Square Online (and where Weebly stands): which fits your business

By: Irina Shvaya | October 5, 2026
This guide is part of our Wix resource hub: whether Wix fits, what it costs, SEO and speed, security, and guides for moving to or away from Wix.

Square Online is the website and online store builder that comes with a Square account. It suits businesses that already take payments through Square at a counter, a food truck or a market stall, because the website shares the same item library, inventory and orders. Wix is a general-purpose website builder with a wider set of design, content and SEO controls, and its own store and point-of-sale tools added on top.

So the choice usually comes down to where your business starts. If in-person sales through Square are the core and the website is an extension of the register, Square Online is the natural fit, and it has a free tier that can take payments. If the website is the core, with pages, a blog, bookings or a larger content plan around the store, Wix gives you more room, at the cost of a paid plan before you can sell anything.

One thing to clear up first: Square owns Weebly, and many articles treat the two as the same product. They are not, and Weebly's position in October 2026 depends on where you are. We cover that below.

Key Takeaways

  • Square no longer sells separate Square Online subscriptions in the US. Online store features are part of the unified Square Free, Plus ($49 per month per location) and Premium ($149 per month per location) plans announced on October 6, 2025.
  • You can sell online on Square Free at 3.3% + 30¢ per online transaction. On Wix, accepting payments starts with the Core plan at $29 per month on yearly billing, as of October 2026.
  • Connecting a custom domain is not included on Square Free. On Wix it is included in every paid plan and not available on the free plan.
  • Online card rates are close: Wix Payments charges 2.9% + $0.30 for most cards in the US, and Square charges 2.9% + 30¢ on Plus and Premium.
  • Weebly's notice says it decided "to wind down Weebly services in 67 countries." The United States is not on that list, and weebly.com still showed its own plans and sign-up buttons on 5 October 2026.
  • Square documents fewer SEO controls than Wix. Its help pages do not mention canonical tags, robots.txt or structured data, and it supports one 301 redirect per page.

Plans and pricing

The two companies price differently, so compare by what you need to do. Wix prices are per site, shown per month for a yearly subscription paid up front; its month-to-month prices appear only at checkout. Square prices are per location per month, and Square's pricing page shows no annual-billing option. All figures are US list prices as of October 2026.

Wix Business Elite$159/mo, billed yearlyYesYesYes

Square Premium$149/mo per locationYesYesYes

Square Plus and Premium each come with a free 30-day trial, and Square says you can cancel or switch plans anytime. Wix offers a 14-day money-back guarantee on the first purchase of a paid plan. Check current prices on Square's online store plans page and Wix's plans page.

Like-for-like, there are two useful comparisons:

  • Cheapest way to sell online at all: Square Free, at $0 per month plus processing fees, on a name.square.site address with a Square banner in the footer. Wix has no equivalent, because its free and Light plans cannot accept payments.
  • Cheapest way to sell online on your own domain: Wix Core at $29 per month on yearly billing, or Square Plus at $49 per month per location. Wix's figure assumes a year paid up front, while Square lists a monthly price only. Keep in mind that the Square Plus fee also covers Square's point-of-sale software and marketing tools for that location, so the two prices do not buy the same bundle.

The "per location" wording matters for Square. Square states that with Plus and Premium "the monthly fee applies to each location you run." For a full breakdown of the Wix side, see Wix plans compared.

Payment processing fees

Subscription price is only half the cost of selling. Each sale also carries a processing fee. These are the published US rates as of October 2026.

Wix's rates are from its Wix Payments service fees page. Wix also lets you connect other providers, including Stripe, PayPal and Square itself. Our guide to Wix Payments fees covers the Wix options in detail.

In-person selling and point of sale

This is Square's home ground. Square started as a payments and point-of-sale company, and the website is one part of a single account. Weebly's own FAQ describes the link this way: "Your Square website syncs with your Square item library, so any changes you make there automatically populate on your Square website and vice versa", with inventory tracked per location. Square Free keeps access to point of sale, websites, online ordering and invoicing without a software subscription.

Wix has its own point of sale too. Wix POS is available to US, Canada and UK businesses connected to Wix Payments, and selling a Wix Stores product in person uses the same catalog, inventory and sales history as the online store. The options are:

  • Mobile POS: the Wix app with a mobile card reader, or Tap to Pay on a phone with no hardware.
  • Wix POS Register: a counter setup that works only with Wix's own hardware. As of October 2026, Wix's US hardware shop lists the Essential POS Register at $1,199 and the Complete POS Register at $1,699.
  • POS Premium plan: $19 per month for POS Register and POS Go, on top of your site plan. Without it, Wix says a POS device can take cash only.

There is also a middle route: Square's plans table lists a "Sync Wix online store" option that connects a Wix store to your Square catalog so that "inventory, orders, and discounts stay in sync." Our Wix POS guide explains the Wix hardware and plan in more depth.

Square's two pages disagree on one point. Its help article lists customer accounts for Plus and Premium subscribers, while its plans table shows customer accounts without a "not included" mark on Square Free. If customer logins matter to you, confirm with Square before relying on the free tier.

Website design and content

Square Online builds pages from sections. Square describes sections as "the content building blocks of your website": you add them from a list, reorder them and edit what is inside. Styling comes from preset site styles (bundles of colors, fonts and shapes) that you can change at any time. Custom fonts, video, parallax, animations and a customizable theme fall under "expanded site customization", which is not included on Square Free. The checkout page keeps Square's default font.

Wix gives you more freedom and more decisions. Its template page offers more than 2,000 templates, the classic Wix Editor lets you position elements freely, and Wix Studio adds breakpoint-level responsive control.

For content, Wix has a full blog app with its own SEO settings. Square has Stories pages for blog-style content. Weebly's FAQ notes that the Square editor "doesn't include a complete blogging solution at this time" and that features such as comments are not supported. If regular publishing is part of your marketing plan, that difference matters.

SEO controls

ControlWixSquare Online
Page titles and descriptionsPer page, per page type and in bulkPer page, and per item and category
Hide pages from searchSite, page type or pageWhole site or individual pages

Canonical tags, robots.txt, structured dataAutomatic, and editableNot mentioned in Square's help articles

"Not mentioned" is not the same as "not there": Square may handle some of these automatically without documenting a control for them. If you are migrating an older site with many URLs to preserve, read Square's redirects article first, because the one-redirect-per-page rule limits how many old addresses you can point at each new page.

Where Weebly stands in October 2026

Weebly was acquired by Square in 2018 and, in Weebly's words, "is now part of the Square suite of business tools." Here is what Square and Weebly state officially, and nothing more:

  • Weebly still publishes its own plans. On 5 October 2026, weebly.com listed Free, Personal ($13 per month billed annually or $16 month-to-month), Professional ($15 or $20) and Performance ($32 or $36), with sign-up buttons.
  • Weebly is winding down in 67 countries. Weebly's notice on its global operations says it decided "to wind down Weebly services in 67 countries by 2026-09-20." It gave 2026-09-27 as the date affected sites would be unpublished and says account access continues until 2026-12-26.
  • The United States is not on that list. Neither are Canada, the UK or Australia. The notice makes no statement about ending Weebly in the US.
  • Trying Square does not convert a Weebly site. Weebly's FAQ says "Your existing Weebly website won't change and will remain in your account. A new site will be added to your account." Weebly does not describe a tool that turns a Weebly site into a Square Online site.
  • The editors are different. Per Weebly, the Square editor uses sections instead of a theme with draggable elements, is not compatible with the Weebly App Center, and uses Stories in place of a full blog.

Weebly's notice says nothing about its long-term future in the US, and guessing at one would not help you. If you run a US Weebly site today, it still works. If you are choosing a platform for a new site, Square's help center directs "Weebly creators" to the Square website builder for its most up-to-date features. If you'd rather move to Wix, our guide to migrating from Weebly to Wix covers the steps.

Choose Wix if, choose Square Online if

Choose Wix if:

  • The website is the center of the business, with content, a blog, bookings or service pages alongside the store.
  • You want more control over design and over SEO settings such as redirects and structured data.
  • You want a custom domain at the lowest paid tier.
  • You sell mostly online, and in-person sales are occasional.

Choose Square Online if:

  • You already use Square at the counter and want one item library and one set of reports.
  • You want to start taking online orders with no monthly fee.
  • Pickup, local delivery and online ordering matter more to you than design flexibility.
  • You run a restaurant, cafe or shop where the site is mainly an ordering channel.

Conclusion

Wix and Square Online solve different problems. Square Online is an online extension of a payments and point-of-sale system, with a free starting point and a simple section-based builder. Wix is a website platform first, with stronger design, content and SEO controls, and it asks for a paid plan before you can sell. Work out whether your register or your website is the center of the business, then price both using your own sales volume and number of locations.
