Claude Code vs website builders: which suits a business owner?

If you want to build and edit your own site by dragging and dropping, with hosting handled for you, a hosted builder such as Wix or Squarespace is usually the simpler choice. If your site already runs on WordPress and you like editing visually, a page builder (Elementor- or WPBakery-style tools that add a drag-and-drop editor to WordPress) keeps that workflow. Claude Code suits a different situation: a site whose code and content live in files you can put in git, work that repeats across many pages, custom features a builder can't do, and a person who can review the changes before they go live.

The newest option sits in between. ChatGPT Sites, in public beta as of October 2026, lets ChatGPT create, host and refine a website from a prompt. It is quick to start, but it has its own limits, covered below.

These tools are not always rivals. Claude Code can write code snippets for a Squarespace site, work with Wix through Wix's own developer tools, or help you move off a builder. This guide compares the approaches for a business owner and helps you choose. If you're weighing AI app builders such as Lovable, Bolt or v0 instead, see our comparison of Claude Code vs Lovable, Bolt and v0.

Key Takeaways

  • Hosted builders (Wix, Squarespace) give you an editor and hosting in one place, with limits on how much custom code you can add. Claude Code is an agent that edits a project's files and runs commands.
  • Wix says its AI-powered editor, Wix Harmony, doesn't support site code beyond "limited custom code with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS snippets", while in Wix Studio "coding is always available."
  • Squarespace code injection is available on its Core, Plus, Advanced and some legacy plans, and its support team "can't help you add custom code to your site or troubleshoot issues that arise from using it."
  • ChatGPT Sites is in public beta on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu. OpenAI says "Every Sites deployment URL is a production deployment," and its rules say not to use Sites for health information or payment-card data.
  • Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan, from Pro at $20 per month billed monthly, as of October 2026. It works best when your site lives in files, in git, with a staging copy.
  • Whichever you choose, a person should check every change before it goes live.

Four different kinds of tool

"Website builder" covers tools that work in quite different ways. The table shows the main differences.

When a hosted builder is the better choice

For a lot of small business sites, a hosted builder is the right answer, and Claude Code would add complexity without much benefit. A builder makes sense when:

  • You want to change text and images yourself, see the result right away and publish with one click.
  • You don't want to think about hosting, security updates or deploys.
  • The site is a brochure, a portfolio or a simple shop that fits the builder's templates and features.
  • Nobody on your team uses git or reads code, and you don't plan to hire someone who does.

The trade-off is control. Wix's developer docs say "Harmony sites don't support site code," though they support "limited custom code with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS snippets." On the classic Wix Editor, "Coding requires enabling Dev Mode," while in Wix Studio "coding is always available," according to Wix's guide to site types. Squarespace's code injection article says checkout pages don't support code. These are reasonable limits for a hosted platform, but they decide how far an AI coding agent can help. Our guides to Claude Code for Wix and Claude Code for Squarespace cover what is possible on each.

When a page builder in WordPress makes sense

A page builder gives a WordPress site a visual editor, so owners and marketers can build layouts without touching theme files. If your team edits pages often and likes working visually, that is a real benefit, and replacing it would take away a workflow people rely on.

The trade-off for Claude Code is where the content lives. Many page builders store layouts in the WordPress database rather than in theme files, so asking an agent to "change the header" in the files may not change what visitors see. Before using Claude Code on such a site, find out where your builder keeps its data, and work on a staging copy. Our guide to Claude Code for WordPress covers the safe setup.

We know this first-hand. eseospace.com used the WoodMart theme with WPBakery before we moved it to a static build with Claude Code in June 2026. The first attempt, a clean Next.js rebuild that stripped out the theme's JavaScript, was abandoned on day one because it broke animations, accordions, widgets and menus. A person decided to keep the theme's own JavaScript instead. The case study of the eseospace.com rebuild has the full story.

What ChatGPT Sites is, and its limits

OpenAI's Sites documentation says "Sites lets ChatGPT create, host, refine, and share websites, web apps, and games." You start by including the word "website" in your prompt or mentioning @Sites. It is in public beta on ChatGPT Plus ($20 per month), Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and OpenAI says Sites is included with eligible plans during the beta, with plan-specific usage limits.

Points a business owner should know before using it for a public site, as of October 2026:

  • No staging by default. "Every Sites deployment URL is a production deployment." To review first, you ask ChatGPT to save a version without deploying it.
  • Domains. Sites doesn't register domains. You can connect one you own by changing its DNS records, but custom domains "aren't available in Enterprise workspaces at launch."
  • Banned uses. OpenAI says not to use Sites to process Protected Health Information or payment-card data, or to "enable financial transactions." That rules it out for many clinic, legal and e-commerce sites.
  • Limits. "Some frameworks, private networks, databases, background services, and hosting patterns aren't supported," and Sites doesn't support data residency at launch.
  • Deletion is final. OpenAI says a deleted Site can't be restored.

For a quick landing page or an internal tool, those limits may not matter. For a main business site, check them against your needs. Our comparison of Claude Code vs ChatGPT for website work goes further.

When Claude Code is the better choice

Claude Code earns its place when the work is bigger than one page or beyond what a builder allows:

  • Bulk changes. Rewriting hundreds of meta descriptions, fixing markup across every page, or changing a phone number everywhere it appears.
  • Custom features. A form that routes leads, structured data on every service page, or an integration the builder doesn't offer.
  • Sites built from code. A static site, a Next.js site or a theme in git, where Claude Code can read the whole project.
  • Migrations. Moving off a builder, with a redirect map and checks that titles, canonicals and structured data survived.

It also needs more from you. As of October 2026, Claude Code comes with paid Claude plans, starting with Pro at $20 per month billed monthly, according to Anthropic's pricing page. You need the site in git, a staging copy and someone who can review the changes. The desktop app lets you work on a folder and review changes without a terminal, but it doesn't remove the need to review.

Using Claude Code alongside a builder

You don't always have to choose. Some ways to combine them:

  • Squarespace: ask Claude Code to write and test a snippet locally, then paste it into code injection or a code block yourself. Squarespace's MCP server (MCP is a standard for connecting AI tools to outside services) currently offers domain tools only, and its MCP overview says "Tools are read-only."
  • Wix: Wix's MCP server lets an AI client "Create, update, and publish sites," among other tools, and Wix Studio offers a code environment. Treat publish access with care and work on a test site first.
  • WordPress with a page builder: use Claude Code for theme files, child themes, custom plugins and bulk content work on a staging copy, and keep the builder for visual layout.

Moving from a builder to a code-based site

Some owners outgrow a builder: they want faster pages, more control or features the platform doesn't allow. Claude Code can help with a move, but a rebuild is a project, not an afternoon. It needs a full inventory of URLs, a redirect map, an SEO parity check before launch and a person approving each step. When we rebuilt eseospace.com, comparing titles, meta descriptions, robots, canonicals, structured-data types and H1s on the old and new versions found zero differences across the 217 pages checked, after one fix. Our guide to rebuilding a website with Claude Code walks through the phases.

Don't move just because a new tool is available. If your builder does what you need and your team is comfortable with it, staying is often the right call.

How to choose

  1. Decide who will edit the site. If it's you, visually, a builder is likely simpler. If a developer or a technical marketer will, Claude Code becomes an option.
  2. List what the site must do. Payments, bookings or health information narrow your choices quickly. Check each platform's rules.
  3. Check where the content lives. Files in git suit Claude Code. A hosted editor or builder database limits what an agent can reach.
  4. Count the repeat work. Many similar pages and frequent bulk updates favor Claude Code.
  5. Test on a copy. Try a real task on a staging site or test site, with a person checking the result.

Conclusion

Website builders are the simpler choice for owners who want to edit visually and let someone else handle hosting; page builders keep that workflow inside WordPress; ChatGPT Sites is a quick way to create a hosted site from a prompt, within its beta limits. Claude Code suits sites built from files, bulk and custom work, and moves off a builder, as long as a person reviews what it changes. If you want help deciding or with the work itself, our Claude Code development team builds and maintains sites this way. More guides are in our Claude Code Guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude Code edit my Wix or Squarespace site directly?

Partly. Wix offers developer tools and an MCP server that can create, update and publish sites, and Wix Studio has coding built in, though Harmony sites don't support site code. On Squarespace, Claude Code can write snippets you paste into code injection or a code block, and Squarespace's MCP server currently offers read-only domain tools.

Is a website builder cheaper than using Claude Code?

It depends on the site and the work. A builder bundles hosting and an editor in one subscription. Claude Code starts at $20 per month on Claude Pro as of October 2026, but you also need hosting, a git setup and someone who can review changes. For a simple site you edit yourself, a builder is usually less work.

Should I move my site off a page builder?

Only if the builder is holding you back, for example with slow pages, missing features or bulk changes that take too long. A move needs a redirect map, SEO checks and testing. If your team relies on visual editing, plan for how they will edit the new site before you start.

Is ChatGPT Sites a good choice for a business website?

It can suit a quick landing page or an internal tool. OpenAI's rules say not to use it for health information, payment-card data or financial transactions, every deployment URL is a production deployment, and it's in public beta. Check those limits against your site's needs.

Can I use a builder and Claude Code together?

Yes. You can keep the builder for visual edits and use Claude Code, or a developer using it, for snippets, theme files, bulk content work and migrations, always on a copy with a person reviewing the result.
