Shopify Agentic Commerce Explained: Agentic Plan, UCP and AI Channels
Shopify Agentic Commerce Explained: Agentic Plan, UCP and AI Channels

Agentic commerce is shopping that happens inside AI assistants: a customer asks ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot for "navy running shorts," the assistant suggests products, and the customer buys either in the chat or on the store's own checkout. Shopify's version is called Agentic Storefronts. As of October 2026, it sends eligible products to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, and it's on by default for eligible Shopify stores.
Three pieces make it work. Shopify Catalog structures your product data and syndicates it to AI channels. The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard Shopify co-developed with Google, lets AI agents talk to merchants' checkouts. And the Agentic plan, a $0-a-month plan, opens all of this to brands that don't run their store on Shopify.
This guide explains what each piece does, how each AI channel handles checkout, what it costs, and what you should set up now. It sticks to what Shopify has published, because this area moves quickly and a lot of what was written in 2025 is already out of date. For related guides, see our Shopify hub.
Key Takeaways
- Agentic Storefronts lists eligible Shopify products in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, managed from Sales channels, then Agentic, in your admin.
- ChatGPT works as a referrer: customers buy on your own online store checkout. Google, Copilot and Meta can use a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the AI channel.
- Shopify says there are no channel fees for selling in these AI channels; you pay your normal payment processing fees.
- The $0 Agentic plan lets brands on other platforms add products to Shopify Catalog and sell in AI channels without moving their store.
- Product data quality is the main thing you control: complete titles, descriptions, categories, variants, images, prices and stock levels.

One change is worth flagging. The original ChatGPT plan, announced in September 2025, promised purchases inside the chat with "no links or redirects." According to Modern Retail's reporting in March 2026, OpenAI pulled back from its Instant Checkout, and Shopify's Help Center now describes ChatGPT as a "discovery-focused referrer platform." Articles that say Shopify merchants sell through ChatGPT Instant Checkout are describing something that no longer works that way.
How each AI channel works
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Help Center page lists four channels as of October 2026:
| Channel | How the purchase happens | Key requirements |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Referrer: customers check out on your online store, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Store must sell to US customers (it can be based elsewhere); products eligible for Shopify Catalog; store policies completed |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | Direct checkout in the Google surface, still rolling out | Store based in and selling to the US; Google Merchant Center via the Google & YouTube channel or a feed |
| Microsoft Copilot | Direct checkout in the chat, on by default, shown to US customers | Store sells to the US; custom pixels and bundles not supported |
| Meta (including Muse when available) | Shopify-powered direct checkout on Meta surfaces | Customers in the US, Canada or Mexico; Facebook & Instagram channel with product sync |
Each channel page says the same thing about cost: "There are no fees associated with selling" in the channel, and "You pay only your standard payment processing fees." Orders show in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution, and Shopify says you "retain full ownership of the customer relationship and post-purchase experience."
Perplexity was named as a launch partner in December 2025 but isn't listed as an Agentic Storefronts sales channel today. Shopify now mentions it only as a third-party AI tool you can connect to manage your store.
Shopify Catalog: how your products reach AI channels
Shopify Catalog is the product feed behind Agentic Storefronts. Shopify says it "infers categories, extracts attributes, consolidates variants, and clusters identical items," and that "Merchants on Shopify with eligible products are in Catalog by default." Catalog syndicates product details to ChatGPT, Copilot, the Shop app and others. Google AI Mode and Gemini get products through the Google & YouTube channel, and Meta through the Facebook & Instagram channel.
By default, Catalog lists each product with its "title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes," and keeps pricing and inventory updated. If your key product data lives in metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes or title separators, Shopify Catalog Mapping lets you point Catalog at the right fields.
Shopify makes a performance claim here: in its Spring '26 announcement, it said "AI searches powered by Shopify Catalog convert at 2x the rate of those using scraped data." That's Shopify's own figure, not an independent benchmark.
You stay in control of visibility:
- You can remove Catalog access for ChatGPT or Copilot in Sales channels, then Agentic. Shopify notes it can take up to 7 days for sharing to stop.
- Removing Catalog access doesn't stop AI tools finding your products through normal web crawling. To hide a product completely, Shopify says to set its status to Unlisted, which also hides it from sitemaps, search engines and your store search.
- Agentic Storefronts supports only direct-to-consumer sales. Products published only to B2B catalogs, behind customer login or on password-protected storefronts are excluded automatically. If you hide wholesale prices with a third-party app, Shopify may not detect them, so check what's showing.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
UCP is the standard that lets AI agents complete purchases with merchants. Shopify announced it on 11 January 2026 as "a new open standard co-developed with Google," endorsed at launch by "20+ retailers and platforms." It works over "REST, Model Context Protocol (MCP), Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), or Agent2Agent (A2A)," and Shopify says it "works with any payment processor, including Shopify Payments."
In practice, UCP lets an agent handle checkout steps that used to need a human on a website: entering discount codes, loyalty details, subscription cadence, or confirming terms such as final sale or pre-order timing. Where a merchant needs input, such as a delivery date for furniture, UCP gives a standard way to ask for it.
For merchants, the key fact is that you don't need to build anything to support it. Shopify's Spring '26 developer update says "Shopify merchants are UCP-enabled by default," and since 4 September 2026 storefronts advertise UCP version 2026-08-25 at /.well-known/ucp. The specification is published at ucp.dev.
For developers, the older Storefront MCP catalog and cart tools at /api/mcp were removed after 31 August 2026. Shopify's docs point to the UCP endpoint at /api/ucp/mcp instead, plus a Checkout MCP server for agents that create and manage checkout sessions.
The Agentic plan: $0 a month for brands not on Shopify
The Agentic plan is for "merchants that don't already use Shopify as their ecommerce platform," according to Shopify's Agentic plan Help Center page. It lets you add products to Shopify Catalog and sell through Agentic Storefronts "without needing to have a Shopify online store or migrate from your existing commerce platform."
What it costs
"The Agentic plan has no monthly subscription fee." You pay Shopify Payments or third-party transaction fees when a customer buys through a Shopify-powered direct checkout in an AI channel, plus any paid apps or services. Shopify's pricing page lists card rates "from 2.9% + 30¢ USD online." Channels that send customers to your existing site's checkout use your own processor there.
How setup differs
- You must add business details and a business registration document, and verify your identity.
- Direct checkout is off by default. You opt in per channel for Google, Copilot and Meta; ChatGPT needs only product discovery setup.
- Each product needs an external product URL that links to its page on your existing store, added in the external URL standard metafield.
- You need published terms of service, privacy and refund policies, and your existing store domain added in Settings, then Domains.
- ChatGPT order history isn't visible in Shopify, so you track it in your own store's analytics.
What it doesn't include
You can build a Shopify online store on the plan, but it stays password-protected until you move to a paid plan. Publishing an online store, Shopify Messaging, selling gift cards, manual orders and Shop post-purchase offers aren't available. If you later move to a paid plan, your products and agentic setup carry over. Compare the paid options in our Shopify plans and pricing guide.
Keeping products in sync
Shopify recommends matching your import method to how often your data changes: CSV imports for small, stable catalogs, and real-time syncing through the GraphQL Admin API or a PIM connector app for larger catalogs with frequent price or stock changes. Real-time syncing matters because an AI channel selling an out-of-stock item is a customer service problem you'll own.
What merchants should set up now
If you're already on a paid Shopify plan, Agentic Storefronts is likely on already. Your job is to make sure your products are represented well. Shopify's own advice is to focus on "complete and well-structured product information in Shopify Catalog" and on "SEO best practices."
1. Review your Agentic settings
- Open Sales channels, then Agentic, and check which channels are active and whether direct checkout is on where offered.
- Accept the Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms if you haven't.
- Complete your terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy in Settings, then Policies. ChatGPT requires them.
2. Clean up product data
- Titles: say what the product is, plainly, with the attributes people ask for (material, size, fit, use).
- Descriptions: answer real questions. Shopify's ChatGPT page says to include any relevant legal disclosures "in the first 6,000 characters."
- Category and attributes: set the product category and fill in attributes so Catalog doesn't have to guess.
- Variants and options: use proper options (up to three per product) rather than separate products for each color or size where possible.
- Images: clear photos of every variant.
- Price and stock: keep them accurate and synced.
- Custom fields: if important data sits in metafields or metaobjects, set up Catalog Mapping.
Our guide to writing AI-friendly product pages goes deeper on wording and structure.
3. Connect the channels that need their own app
- Install the Google & YouTube channel and connect Google Merchant Center for AI Mode and Gemini.
- Install the Facebook & Instagram channel with product sync for Meta.
4. Check your discovery files and crawler rules
Every Shopify store automatically serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt with your store name, sitemap, policies and discovery endpoints. You can customize them with theme templates. Crawler rules in robots.txt affect open-web discovery only; Shopify notes they don't stop Catalog sending data to channels you've activated. For the wider picture on AI search visibility, see GEO for Shopify stores.
5. Measure it
Use the channel and referrer attribution on orders, and the performance and search insight views Shopify added to the Agentic admin in Spring '26, to see which channels and products are getting traction.
Conclusion
Shopify has made agentic commerce a default part of the platform: Catalog and UCP are on for eligible merchants, Agentic Storefronts reaches ChatGPT, Google, Copilot and Meta from one admin screen, and the $0 Agentic plan extends it to brands on other platforms. The channels decide which products to show, so the most useful thing you can do is give them complete, accurate product data and keep it synced. Frequently asked questions
Can customers buy directly inside ChatGPT from Shopify stores?
Not in the chat itself. As of October 2026, Shopify describes ChatGPT as a referrer: customers complete the purchase on your online store checkout in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab. Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta can use a direct checkout inside the channel.
Does selling in AI channels cost extra on Shopify?
Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot or Meta through Agentic Storefronts. You pay your normal payment processing fees on orders.
What is the Shopify Agentic plan?
A $0-a-month plan for brands that don't use Shopify as their ecommerce platform. It lets them add products to Shopify Catalog and sell in AI channels without moving their store. Payment fees apply on direct-checkout orders.
Do I need to do anything to support UCP?
Not as a merchant. Shopify says merchants are UCP-enabled by default. Developers building agents or custom integrations use the UCP endpoints and specification.
Can I stop my products appearing in AI channels?
You can turn off Shopify Catalog access for ChatGPT or Copilot in Sales channels, then Agentic. Products may still be found through web crawling, so to hide a product completely, set it to Unlisted, which also removes it from search engines and your store search.
