How to Evaluate Shopify Apps: Built for Shopify, Pricing, Reviews, Permissions and Performance

The Shopify App Store is huge. Shopify's 2025 annual report (10-K) says more than 21,000 apps were available as of 31 December 2025, while the apps.shopify.com homepage said "over 16,000 apps" when we checked on 1 October 2026. Either way, for almost any feature you can imagine there are dozens of options, and the hard part is choosing well.
A good app choice comes down to six checks: whether the app holds the Built for Shopify badge, how its pricing will scale with your store, what recent reviews say, what data it asks to access, how it affects storefront speed, and what it leaves behind when you uninstall it. None of these takes long, and together they prevent most of the problems we see on audited stores: slow themes, duplicate apps doing the same job, surprise usage bills and leftover code from apps removed years ago.
This guide explains each check as of October 2026. It's part of our Shopify hub, which also covers category guides for reviews, subscriptions, email and SMS, and upsell apps.
Key Takeaways
- Start with what Shopify already includes (Flow, Search & Discovery, Bundles, Subscriptions, Messaging, Inbox) before installing a third-party app.
- The Built for Shopify badge means an app passed Shopify's performance, design and integration requirements, including a limit on how much it can lower your storefront Lighthouse score.
- Model the price at your expected order volume, because many apps charge by orders, contacts, revenue or transactions rather than a flat fee.
- Read recent reviews and the developer's replies, not just the star average; the review count and dates tell you more than the rating.
- Check the install screen's data access list and the app's privacy policy before you click Install.
- Uninstalling doesn't always remove theme code or external billing, so export data and check for leftovers.
Step 0: check what Shopify already gives you
Before browsing the App Store, check whether a free Shopify app or built-in feature covers the need. As of October 2026 that list includes:
- Shopify Flow for automation, free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus.
- Shopify Search & Discovery for filters, synonyms, boosts and product recommendations.
- Shopify Bundles for fixed bundles and multipacks.
- Shopify Subscriptions for recurring orders.
- Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) for email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns.
- Shopify Inbox for chat, including an optional AI agent.
- Native B2B, available on Basic, Grow and Advanced since 2 April 2026 (up to 3 catalogs).
Native apps aren't always the best fit (their App Store ratings are modest: Search & Discovery showed 2.7 stars and Shopify Bundles 2.8 when we checked on 1 October 2026), but they cost nothing, use Shopify's own infrastructure and won't disappear if a vendor shuts down. Our article on when off-the-shelf Shopify apps are enough covers the trade-off in more depth.
What the Built for Shopify badge actually requires
Built for Shopify (BFS) is Shopify's highest quality tier for apps. It isn't a popularity award: apps have to meet measurable requirements. According to Shopify's Built for Shopify requirements, as of October 2026 an app needs:
| Requirement area | What Shopify checks |
|---|---|
| Adoption | At least 50 net installs from active shops on paid plans, at least 5 reviews and a minimum recent rating |
| Admin performance | Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less and Interaction to Next Paint of 200 ms or less, measured over at least 100 calls in 28 days |
| Storefront performance | The app must not reduce the storefront Lighthouse score by more than 10 points |
| Checkout performance | Checkout requests with p95 of 500 ms or less and a 0.1% failure rate |
| Integration | Embedded in the admin with the latest App Bridge; must not use the Asset API to modify theme files |
Shopify reviews BFS status annually and gives developers 60 days to fix failures. Category-specific requirements are also growing: new BFS requirements for subscription apps and for returns and exchanges apps take effect on 1 December 2026, and BFS apps must match the new admin visual style by 1 May 2027.
For merchants, the most useful part is the storefront rule. A BFS app has been tested not to drag your Lighthouse score down by more than 10 points, and it can't edit your theme files through the Asset API, which is the source of most leftover-code problems. The badge doesn't prove an app is right for you, but it's a strong signal that it's built the way Shopify recommends. You can filter App Store search results to BFS apps.
Pricing models and how to compare them
App pricing is rarely a single number. Here are the models you'll see, with real examples from App Store listings as they appeared on 1 October 2026:
| Model | How it works | Example from a listing |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan plus flat tiers | A free tier, then fixed monthly plans | Judge.me: Forever Free plan and a $15/month plan |
| Order-volume tiers | Price rises with monthly orders | Loox: $49.99/month including 300 orders, plus $50 per additional 300 orders |
| Contact-based | Price rises with list size | Omnisend: Standard from $16/month for up to 500 contacts |
| Monthly fee plus transaction fee | Subscription fee plus a percentage of processed revenue | Recharge: Starter $99/month plus 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction |
| Revenue-tiered | Price steps up with the revenue the app generates | Zipify OCU: $9.95/month while upsell revenue is up to $200 a month, rising in steps |
| Minimum spend plus usage | Monthly minimum, then per-message charges | Postscript: $49 monthly minimum, then per-SMS and per-MMS rates plus carrier fees |
Three habits help:
- Price it at next year's volume. An app that's cheap at 200 orders a month can be expensive at 2,000. Work out the cost at the order, contact or revenue level you expect in 12 months.
- Look for "external charges." Some listings say charges may be billed by the developer separately from your Shopify invoice. Those charges won't appear in Settings > Apps billing and won't stop automatically when you uninstall.
- Use the trial properly. Install on a duplicate theme or development store first, and set a calendar reminder before the trial ends.

How to read reviews
A 4.9 rating tells you less than you'd think. Look at:
- Review count. A rating built on thousands of reviews is more stable than one built on 30.
- Recency. Sort by newest. Apps change hands, change pricing and change support teams. Reviews from the last three to six months describe the app you'd actually be installing.
- Negative reviews and replies. Read the 1- and 2-star reviews. Are the complaints about missing features (fine), billing surprises or data loss (not fine)? Does the developer reply helpfully?
- Stores like yours. Reviews show the reviewer's country and how long they've used the app. A review from a store using it for two years is worth more than one from day one.
- The summary box. The "What merchants think" summary is generated by Shopify Magic and only appears when an app has 100+ reviews and at least a 4.0 rating. It's a useful digest, but read real reviews too.
Also check the "Launched" date and the developer's other apps. A long-running developer with several maintained apps is usually a safer bet than a brand-new single-app vendor.
Permissions and data access
When you install an app, Shopify shows an install screen listing what the app can access. According to Shopify's install guide, it's split into "View personal data" (such as customers, store owner and blog contributors) and "View and edit store data" (such as customers, products, orders, discounts, gift cards, marketing, analytics and the Online Store). Each section expands for detail, and the screen links to the developer's privacy policy.
Ask whether the access matches the job. A size chart app that wants to edit orders and read all customer data deserves a question to the developer. Remember too that adding an app that handles customer data may mean updating your privacy policy.
After install, Settings > Apps lets you review each app's billing and usage charges, set spending limits, and see its extensions, Functions, pixels and permissions. It's worth an audit every quarter. On staff permissions, only staff with the right app permissions should be able to install apps and approve charges. Our Shopify security guide covers that setup.
Performance impact
Apps are the most common cause of a slow Shopify theme. What to look for:
- Theme app extensions (app blocks and app embeds). These add functionality through the theme editor without editing theme code. Shopify describes them as decreasing the risk of breaking changes, and you can remove an app block from the editor.
- No script tags. Since 1 October 2026, apps can't create or update storefront script tags, and Shopify will stop running them on storefronts on 1 March 2027. If an app still depends on script tags, ask the developer about its migration plan.
- Test before and after. Run a Lighthouse or PageSpeed test on key templates before installing, then again after. If the score drops sharply, that's your answer.
- Avoid overlap. Two apps doing pop-ups, or a reviews app plus a separate star-rating app, double the scripts for one job.

Plan limits and compatibility
Some capabilities depend on your plan. Public App Store apps that contain Shopify Functions work on any plan, but custom apps with Functions require Plus. Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps are Plus-only, so an app that promises in-checkout upsells may only do that on Plus. Check the listing's "Works with" section and plan notes, and compare against what your Shopify plan includes.
Also check compatibility with your theme (especially if you use a heavily customized or older theme), your languages and markets, and any other apps the new one must talk to (for example, a reviews app feeding your email platform).
Uninstalling cleanly
Shopify's uninstall documentation lists what to watch:
- Export your data first. Some apps store data you can't recover after uninstalling, and reinstalling may not restore settings.
- Check for leftover code. Some apps add code to your theme that isn't removed automatically. Check the listing or ask the developer for uninstall steps.
- Remove app blocks and embeds in the theme editor, so empty sections don't linger.
- Cancel external billing separately. Uninstalling stops future recurring charges billed through Shopify, but you may still be billed for the current cycle, and external charges from the developer won't be canceled.
- Replace anything that depended on it. Shopify warns that automations, integrations and features that depend on the app stop working.
On the data side, Shopify sends app developers a shop data deletion request (shop/redact) 48 hours after an app is uninstalled, so developers can erase the store's data from their systems.
Conclusion
The best app stack is usually smaller than you'd expect: native Shopify tools where they're good enough, a few well-chosen third-party apps for the rest, and nothing installed "just to try" on the live theme. Check the BFS badge, price each app at the volume you expect next year, read recent reviews, question unusual data access, test speed before and after, and uninstall cleanly. When no app fits, a custom app can be cheaper over time. That's the kind of build eSEOspace's Shopify app development team takes on.
Frequently asked questions
How many apps are in the Shopify App Store?
Shopify's 10-K says more than 21,000 apps were available as of 31 December 2025. The apps.shopify.com homepage said "over 16,000 apps" on 1 October 2026. Both are Shopify figures and Shopify hasn't explained the gap, so cite the source and date whenever you use one.
What does Built for Shopify mean?
It's a badge for apps that meet Shopify's highest standards for performance, design and integration. Requirements include admin speed thresholds, a cap of 10 points on storefront Lighthouse impact, checkout performance limits, embedding with the latest App Bridge and not editing theme files through the Asset API.
Are free Shopify apps really free?
Many have a genuinely free tier, but limits apply, such as order caps, contact caps or missing features. Some listings say "Free to install" while the developer bills usage separately. Read the pricing section and model your volume.
Does uninstalling an app remove its code?
Not always. Shopify says some apps add theme code that isn't removed automatically. Check the developer's uninstall instructions, remove app blocks in the theme editor and test your theme afterward.
How many apps should a Shopify store have?
There's no official number. Install only apps that do a distinct job, avoid overlap, and remove anything you no longer use. Every storefront app should earn its impact on page speed.
