Is Shopify Worth It in 2026? An Honest Look at Costs, Pros, Cons and Alternatives
Is Shopify Worth It in 2026? An Honest Look at Costs, Pros, Cons and Alternatives

For most businesses that mainly sell physical products online, Shopify is worth it in 2026. It bundles hosting, security, a checkout that converts, payments, point of sale and a huge app ecosystem into a monthly subscription, and it keeps adding features (B2B on all core plans, AI channels, free automation) that used to cost extra or require Shopify Plus.
It isn't the right choice for everyone, though. The plan price is only part of the cost: payment processing, apps and themes add up, and you'll pay extra transaction fees if you don't use Shopify Payments. Shopify also makes some trade-offs that frustrate certain businesses, such as fixed URL paths, three product options, and checkout customization that's limited unless you're on Plus.
This guide gives an honest picture: what Shopify really costs, where it's strong, where it's weak, who it suits, who should look elsewhere and which alternatives to compare. All prices are US figures as of October 2026. For other guides in this series, visit the Shopify hub.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify's US plans cost $39, $105 or $399 a month on monthly billing ($29, $79 or $299 a month billed yearly), and Plus starts at $2,300 a month.
- Payment processing usually costs more than the subscription itself, so compare the total cost, not the plan price.
- Shopify's strengths are its checkout, payments, reliability, app ecosystem and how much is included on every plan.
- The main drawbacks are third-party gateway fees, app cost creep, fixed URL structures and limited checkout customization below Plus.
- Content-first sites, businesses needing deep checkout control on a budget and sellers in countries without Shopify Payments should compare alternatives carefully.

| Plan | Monthly billing | Billed yearly or longer term (per month) | US online card rate (Shopify Payments) | Third-party gateway fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | $29 | 2.9% + 30¢ | 2% |
| Grow | $105 | $79 | 2.7% + 30¢ | 1% |
| Advanced | $399 | $299 | 2.5% + 30¢ | 0.6% |
| Plus | From $2,500 (1-year term) | From $2,300 (3-year term) | 2.25% + 30¢ | 0.2% |

Shopify says there are no setup fees on any plan. Premium cards (American Express and business cards) cost more in the US, for example 3.5% + 30¢ on Basic, and international cards add 1%.
The Grow plan was called "Shopify" until April 2025, so older reviews may use that name. Our detailed guide to Shopify pricing plans covers every plan feature.
The total cost reality
Here's an illustrative first-year budget for a small store doing $5,000 a month in online sales from 100 orders. The app and theme figures are assumptions; the plan and payment figures use Shopify's published US rates for standard cards.
| Cost | Per year | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Basic plan, billed yearly | $348 | $29 a month |
| Shopify Payments processing | $2,100 | 2.9% of $60,000 plus 30¢ on 1,200 orders |
| Apps | $600 | Assumed $50 a month (reviews, email, upsells, etc.) |
| Theme | $0 to $500 | Free themes exist; paid Theme Store themes were $100 to $500 one-time on 1 October 2026 |
| Total before shipping, marketing and inventory | About $3,050 to $3,550 | Roughly 5% to 6% of sales |
Two lessons stand out. First, processing is by far the biggest platform cost, and it's largely unavoidable on any platform because card networks and processors charge it. Second, app spending is the cost most store owners underestimate. Audit apps every quarter and remove the ones you don't use. Our guide to what a Shopify store really costs goes deeper.
When to upgrade: moving from Basic to Grow cuts the standard online card rate by 0.2 percentage points. On monthly billing, the extra $66 a month pays for itself at about $33,000 a month in standard-card online sales ($66 divided by 0.2%). On yearly billing, the $50 difference breaks even at about $25,000 a month. Grow also adds five staff accounts, which Basic doesn't support, and that alone is a reason for many teams to upgrade earlier.
What Shopify does well
- Everything essential is included. Shopify says its plans include secure hosting, unlimited bandwidth and a free TLS/SSL certificate for domains you add. There's no server to manage, patch or scale for traffic spikes.
- Checkout and payments. Shopify's checkout is maintained by Shopify, tested for WCAG 2.2 Level AA according to its accessibility statement, and includes Shop Pay. Shopify says Shop Pay reaches "250M+ shoppers." Shopify Payments is available in 40 countries.
- Reporting on every plan. All plans now include "200+ real-time reports, plus custom analytics." Older reviews that say advanced reports require higher plans are out of date.
- Free tools that used to cost extra. Shopify Flow automation is free on Basic and above. Shopify Magic and Sidekick, Shopify's AI tools, are included with every plan, with usage limits that vary by plan.
- B2B without Plus. Since 2 April 2026, Basic, Grow and Advanced include native B2B with up to three catalogs, company profiles, payment terms and volume pricing.
- Selling everywhere. In-person selling is included on every paid plan, with POS Pro at $89 a month per location (billed yearly) for advanced retail. Agentic Storefronts lists products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and (rolling out to eligible US stores) Google AI Mode and Gemini, with no channel fees.
- The app ecosystem. The Shopify App Store homepage says it has over 16,000 apps, and Shopify's 10-K reported more than 21,000 apps as of 31 December 2025. Whatever you need, someone has probably built it.
- Scale and stability. Shopify estimates it has more than 14% of US ecommerce (2025), so it isn't going anywhere, and finding developers, agencies and documentation is easy.
Where Shopify falls short
- Fees for third-party payment providers. If you use a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of what your provider charges. For stores created on or after 12 May 2025, orders paid with store credit or gift cards are also charged third-party transaction fees on that amount.
- App cost creep. Features that are built in on some platforms (advanced reviews, subscriptions, product options, bundles) often mean a monthly app fee on Shopify.
- Three options per product. Products can have up to 2,048 variants since October 2025, but still only three options. Complex configurators need apps or custom work.
- Fixed URL structure. Products live under /products/ and collections under /collections/. You can edit the handle at the end of a URL, but not those fixed paths, and Shopify's redirect documentation notes you can't create redirects from them. That's rarely a ranking problem, but it frustrates migrations and some SEO teams.
- Checkout control below Plus. Checkout UI extensions for the Information, Shipping and Payment steps are Plus-only, as are custom apps that use Shopify Functions. Shopify Scripts stopped working on 30 June 2026.
- Plus is a big jump. Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term, a large step from Advanced at $399 a month.
- Content features are basic. The built-in blog works, but content-heavy brands often find WordPress or a headless CMS more flexible.
Who Shopify fits
- Brands selling physical products direct to consumers, from first sale to tens of millions in revenue.
- Retailers who sell online and in store and want one inventory and customer list.
- Small teams who don't want to manage hosting, security updates or checkout compliance.
- Wholesale sellers with simple B2B needs, now that B2B is on all core plans.
- Businesses that want to sell on marketplaces, social and AI channels from one admin.
Who should look elsewhere (or compare carefully)
- Content-first businesses where the store is secondary to publishing. See our comparison of Shopify vs WordPress for SEO.
- Stores that need deep checkout customization but can't justify Plus.
- Sellers in countries without Shopify Payments, who'll pay Shopify's third-party transaction fee on every order (0.2% even on Plus) on top of their provider's charges.
- Very complex B2B needing unlimited customer-specific catalogs, partial payments or deposits, which remain Plus-only on Shopify.
- Developer-led teams wanting full control of the stack, who may prefer open-source or headless approaches.
Alternatives worth comparing
| Alternative | Consider it if | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| WooCommerce | You want WordPress content power and full code ownership | You manage hosting, updates, security and more plugins |
| BigCommerce | You want more built-in features and payment provider choice | Smaller app ecosystem; plans have sales thresholds |
| Headless (Shopify or other back end) | You need a fully custom front end and performance control | Higher build and maintenance cost |
| Marketplaces and social shops | You want demand without building a brand site first | Less control over customers, data and branding |

How to decide
- List your must-have features and check which need apps on Shopify, and what those apps cost.
- Model your total cost at today's sales and at twice today's sales, including processing.
- Check whether Shopify Payments is available in your country.
- Use the trial to build your real product pages and checkout, not a demo.
- Plan for where you'll be in three years: if Plus-only features are likely, budget for them now.
Conclusion
Shopify is worth it for most product-led businesses in 2026 because it removes the hardest technical work, includes more on every plan than it used to and has the largest ecosystem of apps and experts. Go in with realistic numbers: processing and apps will usually cost more than the plan, and third-party gateway fees make Shopify Payments almost essential. If your needs center on content, deep checkout control or complex B2B on a budget, compare alternatives before you commit. Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify worth it for a small business?
Usually, yes, if you sell physical products online. The Basic plan costs $39 a month on monthly billing ($29 billed yearly) and includes hosting, checkout, reports and in-person selling. Budget for payment processing and a few apps on top.
What are the hidden costs of Shopify?
The main ones are payment processing, third-party gateway fees if you don't use Shopify Payments, paid apps, a paid theme if you choose one, and higher rates for premium and international cards.
Is Shopify cheaper than WooCommerce?
Not always. WooCommerce software is free, but you pay for hosting, plugins, security and maintenance time. Compare total cost and the time you'll spend managing each, not just subscription fees.
Do I need Shopify Plus?
Most stores don't. Plus makes sense when you need checkout customization in the main checkout steps, custom apps using Shopify Functions, unlimited B2B catalogs, more expansion stores or a variable platform fee at high volume.
Can I leave Shopify later?
Yes. Shopify's Help Center says you can export products, customers and inventory to CSV files, and orders as export-only CSVs. Themes, apps and URL structures don't transfer directly to another platform. Plan redirects carefully to protect search rankings.
