Shopify Plus vs Shopify Advanced (2026): When Is Plus Worth It?

This guide is part of our Shopify resource hub: plans and fees, setup, every major feature, apps, marketing, operations, comparisons and migrations.

Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus are the two top plans most growing brands weigh against each other. Advanced costs $399 a month billed monthly ($299 billed yearly). Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term. That's a gap of roughly $1,900 to $2,200 a month, and the question is what you get for it.

As of October 2026, the honest answer is that Plus rarely pays for itself through lower card rates alone; that only happens at around $760,000 a month in online card sales. Brands upgrade because of specific capabilities: checkout customization, custom Shopify Functions, unlimited B2B catalogs, multiple stores, more locations and staff, higher API limits and Plus-only tools like Launchpad and Shopify Audiences. If none of those is blocking you, Advanced is usually enough.

This guide compares the two plans feature by feature, then walks through break-even scenarios using Shopify's published rates. For background on each plan, see our Shopify Plus guide, our Basic vs Grow vs Advanced comparison and the Shopify hub.

Key Takeaways

  • Advanced costs $399 a month (or $299 billed yearly); Plus starts at $2,300 a month on a 3-year term or $2,500 on a 1-year term, and complex or high-volume businesses move to a variable platform fee.
  • Plus lowers the standard US online card rate from 2.5% + 30¢ to 2.25% + 30¢ and the third-party gateway fee from 0.6% to 0.2%.
  • On standard card savings alone, Plus breaks even at about $760,400 a month in online sales versus Advanced on monthly billing.
  • Plus-only capabilities include checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps, custom apps with Shopify Functions, unlimited B2B catalogs, 9 expansion stores, 200 locations and unlimited staff.
  • Since April 2026, B2B with up to 3 catalogs is available on Advanced, which removed one of the most common reasons to upgrade.

Price and contract

Advanced is a standard subscription you can change or cancel like any other Shopify plan. Plus is a term contract. The Plus pricing page says the plan "starts at $2,300 USD a month for standard setups and integrations on a 3-year term, or $2,500 USD per month for a 1-year term. More complex, higher volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on their revenue and business model." Shopify doesn't publish that variable fee, and its pricing FAQ says you "can cancel when your term commitment expires."

There's also a paid Plus trial: $399 a month for 1 to 2 months. If you take no action at the end, Shopify's Help Center says the store "is automatically enrolled in a full Plus plan."

What Advanced already gives you

Advanced isn't a stripped-down plan. It includes everything in Grow plus 15 staff accounts, third-party carrier-calculated shipping, theme customization per market, checkout and customer account customization per market, enhanced chat support and the lower 2.5% card rate. Since 2 Apr 2026, Advanced also gets native B2B with up to 3 catalogs, ACH payments (US only) and payment terms. All plans now get the same 200+ reports and custom analytics, and Shopify Flow is free on every paid plan.

The B2B change matters: before April 2026, wholesale was the most common reason a mid-size brand had to move to Plus. Many brands with a handful of wholesale price lists can now stay on Advanced. See our Shopify B2B guide for the full plan comparison.

Break-even scenarios

These use the 3-year Plus price ($2,300) and US standard online card rates. They ignore the variable platform fee, which applies to more complex, higher-volume businesses.

Scenario 1: card savings only

  • Plan gap versus Advanced billed monthly: $2,300 − $399 = $1,901 a month.
  • Rate saving: 0.25 points on standard online cards.
  • Break-even: $1,901 ÷ 0.0025 = $760,400 a month in standard online card sales.
  • Against Advanced billed yearly ($299), the gap is $2,001 and break-even is $800,400 a month. On the 1-year Plus price ($2,500), it's $840,400 a month versus Advanced billed monthly.

Scenario 2: you use a third-party gateway

  • If you can't use Shopify Payments, the fee drops from 0.6% to 0.2%, a 0.4-point saving.
  • Break-even: $1,901 ÷ 0.004 = about $475,250 a month in sales through that gateway.

Scenario 3: retail locations

  • A brand with 10 POS Pro locations on Advanced pays 10 × $89 = $890 a month (billed yearly).
  • Plus includes 20 POS Pro locations, so the effective plan gap shrinks to $1,901 − $890 = $1,011.
  • Break-even on card savings: $1,011 ÷ 0.0025 = about $404,400 a month in online card sales.

Scenario 4: multiple stores

  • A brand running three Advanced stores (for example, separate stores for different regions) pays 3 × $399 = $1,197 a month.
  • Plus includes the main store and 9 expansion stores (each live expansion store needs its own theme license), so the plan gap becomes $2,300 − $1,197 = $1,103 before any rate savings.

In practice, combine the lines that apply to you: card savings, gateway fees, POS locations, store count, Shopify Tax and Managed Markets fees, and the staff or development time Plus features would save. If the total still falls short, Advanced is the better plan for now.

Signs you've outgrown Advanced

  • Checkout: you need custom fields, upsells or logic in the information, shipping or payment steps, which require Plus-only checkout UI extensions. See Shopify checkout extensibility.
  • Custom logic: you need private discount, shipping or payment rules built as a custom app with Shopify Functions (public Function apps work on Advanced). Shopify Scripts stopped executing on 30 Jun 2026, so former Script users must use Functions.
  • Wholesale depth: you need more than 3 B2B catalogs, catalogs assigned to specific companies, deposits or partial payments.
  • Scale and integrations: ERP, PIM or OMS syncs are hitting the 200 points per second API limit, or you need more than 10 locations or 15 staff.
  • Multiple storefronts: you run or plan several stores for regions or sub-brands under one brand.
  • High-traffic launches: you run product drops where Launchpad scheduling and bot protection matter.

Signs Advanced is still right

  • Your checkout needs are covered by branding settings, Thank you page blocks and public apps.
  • Three or fewer wholesale catalogs cover your B2B customers.
  • You run one store and fewer than 10 locations.
  • Your online card volume is well below the break-even range and you have no Plus-only blockers.
  • You want to avoid a 1- or 3-year commitment.

Conclusion

Advanced is the right plan for most brands until a specific Plus capability becomes a real constraint, because card savings alone only cover the Plus fee at very high volume. Plus earns its cost when checkout customization, custom Functions, deep B2B, multiple stores, retail scale or API capacity are blocking growth.
