Shopify Basic vs Grow vs Advanced (2026): Which Plan Pays Off?
Shopify Basic vs Grow vs Advanced (2026): Which Plan Pays Off?

Shopify Basic, Grow and Advanced share the same core store, checkout, reports and 10 inventory locations. As of October 2026, what you pay more for on each step up is lower card rates, more staff accounts, better shipping options and, on Advanced, the ability to tailor your store and checkout by market. On monthly billing, the plans cost $39, $105 and $399 a month.
On payment fees alone, Grow pays for itself over Basic once you process about $33,000 a month in online card sales on monthly billing, or $25,000 a month on yearly billing. Advanced pays for itself over Grow at about $147,000 a month (monthly billing) or $110,000 (yearly). Features such as staff accounts can justify upgrading well before those volumes, as long as you know what you're paying for.
This guide compares the three plans head to head, shows the break-even arithmetic step by step, and lists the signals that it's time to upgrade. Prices and rates are US figures from Shopify's pricing page as of October 2026. For Plus and the $0 Agentic plan, see our full Shopify plans and pricing guide, and for more, the Shopify hub.
Key Takeaways
- Each step up cuts the online card rate by 0.2 percentage points: 2.9%, then 2.7%, then 2.5% (plus 30¢ on each).
- On card rates alone, Grow beats Basic above about $33,000 a month in online card sales on monthly billing ($25,000 on yearly billing).
- If you use a third-party payment provider, the break-even drops sharply because the Shopify fee falls from 2% to 1% to 0.6%.
- Basic has no staff accounts and no carrier-calculated shipping; Grow adds 5 staff, and Advanced adds 15 staff and per-market customization.
- All three plans get the same 200+ reports, custom reports, 10 locations and up to 3 B2B catalogs.

Break-even math: when lower card rates pay for the upgrade
The 30¢ fixed fee is the same on all three plans, so only the percentage matters. The break-even sales volume is the extra monthly subscription cost divided by the rate saving.
Basic to Grow
- Extra cost on monthly billing: $105 − $39 = $66 a month.
- Rate saving on online standard cards: 2.9% − 2.7% = 0.2 points, or 0.002.
- Break-even: $66 ÷ 0.002 = $33,000 a month in online card sales.
- On yearly billing: ($79 − $29) ÷ 0.002 = $50 ÷ 0.002 = $25,000 a month.
Grow to Advanced
- Extra cost on monthly billing: $399 − $105 = $294 a month.
- Rate saving: 2.7% − 2.5% = 0.2 points.
- Break-even: $294 ÷ 0.002 = $147,000 a month.
- On yearly billing: ($299 − $79) ÷ 0.002 = $220 ÷ 0.002 = $110,000 a month.
Basic to Advanced
- Extra cost on monthly billing: $399 − $39 = $360 a month.
- Rate saving: 2.9% − 2.5% = 0.4 points.
- Break-even: $360 ÷ 0.004 = $90,000 a month.
- On yearly billing: $270 ÷ 0.004 = $67,500 a month.
Premium cards have the same 0.2-point steps (3.5%, 3.3%, 3.1%), so these break-even points hold for your premium card volume too. In-person rates only drop by 0.1 point per step (2.6%, 2.5%, 2.4%), so in-person sales count for half as much. If you sell both ways, your monthly saving from Basic to Grow is roughly 0.002 × online card sales + 0.001 × in-person card sales. Compare that with $66 (monthly) or $50 (yearly).
Break-even with a third-party payment provider
If you can't or don't use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee on top of your provider's fees, and the gaps between plans are much bigger:
| Upgrade | Fee saving | Break-even (monthly billing) | Break-even (yearly billing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic to Grow | 2% − 1% = 1 point | $66 ÷ 0.01 = $6,600 a month | $50 ÷ 0.01 = $5,000 a month |
| Grow to Advanced | 1% − 0.6% = 0.4 points | $294 ÷ 0.004 = $73,500 a month | $220 ÷ 0.004 = $55,000 a month |
| Basic to Advanced | 2% − 0.6% = 1.4 points | $360 ÷ 0.014 ≈ $25,700 a month | $270 ÷ 0.014 ≈ $19,300 a month |
Remember that for stores created on or after 12 May 2025, gift card and store credit payments also attract the third-party fee, even with Shopify Payments. If those payments make up a large share of your sales, include them in the calculation. Our transaction fees guide covers this rule.
A worked example
A store sells $40,000 a month online, all through Shopify Payments, with 80% on standard cards and 20% on premium cards. It's on monthly billing.
- Basic card fees (percentage part): 2.9% × $32,000 + 3.5% × $8,000 = $928 + $280 = $1,208.
- Grow card fees: 2.7% × $32,000 + 3.3% × $8,000 = $864 + $264 = $1,128.
- Saving on Grow: $1,208 − $1,128 = $80 a month, against $66 in extra subscription. Grow comes out $14 a month ahead before you count any features.
- Advanced card fees: 2.5% × $32,000 + 3.1% × $8,000 = $800 + $248 = $1,048. Saving versus Grow: $80, against $294 in extra subscription. Advanced is $214 a month behind on fees alone.
So this store should be on Grow unless it needs something only Advanced offers.
Reporting: no longer a reason to upgrade
Older comparisons said Basic had "basic reports" and only Advanced had a custom report builder. That's out of date. Every plan on the current pricing page lists "200+ real-time reports, plus custom analytics," and Shopify's Basic plan Help Center page says Basic "comes with access to all reports, including the ability to create custom reports with data explorations."
Advanced still has one reporting extra: Shopify's Help Center says you can "activate predicted values for certain reports." For most stores, Shopify's built-in reports plus a properly configured analytics setup will cover day-to-day needs; our guide to Google Analytics for Shopify explains how to set that up.
Staff accounts and team features
Staff is often the real trigger for leaving Basic. Shopify's Help Center says "The Basic plan doesn't support adding staff accounts." You can still invite third-party collaborators (such as a developer or agency) on every plan, but anyone on your own team who needs their own login means Grow (5 staff) or Advanced (15 staff).
Grow also unlocks a few team and automation features:
- Shopify Flow's "Send HTTP Request" action, which lets automations call outside systems, is available on Grow, Advanced and Plus.
- Generating apps with Sidekick is available only on Grow, Advanced and Plus.
- Custom apps get full data access on Grow and above, compared with limited access on Basic.
Shipping and international selling
Basic can't turn on third-party carrier-calculated shipping, which shows customers live rates from carriers at checkout. Grow offers it as an add-on, and Advanced includes it. With Shopify Payments, Grow and higher also include up to $200 of shipping insurance on eligible labels, according to Shopify's shipping page.
For international stores, all three plans can create markets, translate the storefront, assign local domains and, with Shopify Payments, show local currencies. Advanced adds the ability to customize your theme for each market and customize checkout and customer accounts pages for each market. If you need a meaningfully different storefront for, say, Canada and the UK, Advanced is the first plan that supports it.
When to upgrade: a checklist
Move from Basic to Grow when
- Someone else on your team needs their own admin login.
- You need live carrier rates at checkout.
- Your online card volume is near $25,000 to $33,000 a month (depending on billing cycle), or about $5,000 to $6,600 if you use a third-party gateway.
- You want Flow automations that call outside systems, or Sidekick app generation.
Move from Grow to Advanced when
- You need more than 5 staff accounts.
- You want a different theme or checkout experience per market.
- Your online card volume is near $110,000 to $147,000 a month, or about $55,000 to $73,500 with a third-party gateway.
- Your integrations are hitting standard API limits; see our guide to Shopify API rate limits.
Beyond Advanced, look at Plus when you need checkout customization beyond the Thank you and Order status pages, more than 3 B2B catalogs, expansion stores or more than 15 staff. Our Shopify Plus guide runs the same break-even math for Plus.
Conclusion
Basic, Grow and Advanced are the same platform with different rates and limits. Use the break-even numbers to see where fees alone justify an upgrade, then add the features you actually need: staff logins and carrier rates point to Grow, and per-market customization and a larger team point to Advanced. Re-run the math every few months as your volume changes. If you want help choosing or setting up the right plan, eSEOspace's Shopify website design team works with stores at every stage.
Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify Grow worth it over Basic?
On card fees alone, Grow pays off above about $33,000 a month in online card sales on monthly billing, or $25,000 on yearly billing. You may want to upgrade sooner if you need staff accounts or carrier-calculated shipping.
What's the difference between Shopify Grow and Advanced?
Advanced has lower rates (2.5% + 30¢ online versus 2.7% + 30¢), 15 staff accounts instead of 5, carrier-calculated shipping included, predicted values in reports, higher API limits and per-market theme and checkout customization.
Do higher Shopify plans get better reports?
Not much anymore. All three plans get 200+ reports and custom reports. Advanced adds predicted values for certain reports.
Can I have staff accounts on Shopify Basic?
No. Shopify says the Basic plan doesn't support adding staff accounts. You can invite third-party collaborators, but your own team members need Grow or higher.
Can I switch plans at any time?
Yes. You can change plans in your Shopify admin settings, and your Shopify Payments rate updates when you do. If you're on yearly billing, check how the change affects your current billing cycle before switching.
