Shopify Product Page Best Practices for Sales and SEO
Shopify Product Page Best Practices for Sales and SEO

A good Shopify product page does two jobs at once. It convinces a visitor to buy, and it gives search engines and AI shopping tools enough clean, structured information to show the product to the right people in the first place. Most of the work happens in the product editor rather than the theme: the title, description, media, variants, category, metafields and SEO fields you fill in for each product.
The bar has risen in the last two years. Products can now have up to 2,048 variants, Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy unlocks category-specific attributes, and Shopify Catalog shares product data with AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google AI Mode. Shopify says eligible products are in Catalog by default, so the data you enter on a product page is now read far beyond your own storefront.
This guide walks through each part of a Shopify product page, what to put in it, and the limits to know as of October 2026. It's written for store owners and the people who manage catalogs for them.
Key Takeaways
- Write titles that name the product plainly; keep marketing language for the description and keep SEO titles to about 70 characters.
- Assign every product a category from Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy so you can fill in category metafields such as size, color and material.
- Shopify allows up to 250 images, videos or 3D models per product, with images up to 20 MB and 5000 x 5000 px.
- Products can have up to 2,048 variants but still only three options, so plan option names before you build large catalogs.
- Shopify's Liquid structured_data filter outputs schema.org Product or ProductGroup markup, so check your theme uses it or equivalent markup.
Anatomy of a high-converting product page
Think of the page from top to bottom, the way a shopper meets it:
| Element | Job it does | Where it's set in Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Says exactly what the product is | Product editor: Title |
| Media | Shows the product, scale, use and every variant | Product editor: Media |
| Price and variant picker | Shows the real price for the chosen option | Pricing and Variants |
| Add to cart and accelerated buttons | Lets the shopper act | Theme and payment settings |
| Shipping and returns summary | Removes delivery and risk doubts | Theme blocks or metafields |
| Description | Explains benefits, use and who it's for | Product editor: Description |
| Specs and attributes | Answers fit, size, material, compatibility | Category metafields and custom metafields |
| Reviews | Social proof and answers to objections | Review app |
| Related products | Keeps browsing going | Theme, Search & Discovery or apps |
| Search listing | Controls how the page appears in search | Product editor: Search engine listing |
Titles and descriptions
Titles
Your product title appears on the page, in collections, in search results, in Shopify Catalog and in feeds to Google and Meta. Name the product the way a shopper would search for it: brand or line, product type and the key distinguishing feature. "Linen Relaxed Shirt, Short Sleeve" beats "The Weekend Hero." Shopify's own guidance for AI channels says to "use clear, concise product titles."
Avoid stuffing variants into the title (sizes and colors belong in variants), and avoid all-caps or promotional text like "SALE," which ages badly and gets copied into feeds.
Search engine listing
Each product has its own page title, meta description and URL handle under Search engine listing. Shopify's Help Center warns that titles over 70 characters and meta descriptions over 160 characters may be cut off in search results. Write a page title that front-loads the product name, and a meta description that states the main benefit and a reason to click (free returns, materials, made-in). If you change a URL handle on a live product, make sure a redirect from the old URL is created so existing links and rankings aren't lost.
Descriptions
- Lead with the outcome: what the product does for the buyer, in the first two sentences.
- Use scannable structure: short paragraphs and bullet points for features.
- Answer the questions you get: sizing, fit, materials, care, compatibility, what's in the box.
- Write originally: manufacturer copy is duplicated across every retailer selling the same item.
- Be accurate: Shopify Payments' risk guidance lists "product listings that don't match what's delivered" as a risk signal, and it's a common source of disputes.
Shopify Magic, free on every plan, can draft product descriptions from a few keywords. Treat its drafts as a starting point and edit for accuracy and your brand voice. Our guide to product page SEO mistakes covers common copy problems.
Media: images, video and 3D
Shopify's limits, from the product media help page:
- Up to 250 images, videos or 3D models per product. The limit can't be raised.
- Images must be under 20 MB and can be up to 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels).
- PNG and JPEG are recommended; WebP, GIF, HEIC and other formats are accepted.
Best practices:
- Cover the questions images answer best: front, back, detail, scale (in hand or on a model), in use, and packaging.
- Show every variant: assign an image to each variant so the main image changes when a shopper picks a color.
- Keep a consistent aspect ratio across products so collection grids look tidy.
- Write alt text that describes the image ("navy linen shirt, front view, model wearing size M"). It helps accessibility and search, and Shopify recommends descriptive alt text for AI channels too.
- Watch page weight: your theme controls how many images and videos load at once, so check mobile speed after adding media.
Variants and options
Since 15 October 2025, every Shopify store can create up to 2,048 variants per product. Each product can still have only three options (for example Size, Color and Material). Stores with 500,000 or more variants face a daily limit of 10,000 new variants via apps or CSV, which doesn't apply on Plus.
- Check your theme and apps: Shopify notes some themes and apps don't support more than 100 variants. Test a large product before you rely on it.
- Use clear option names: "Size" and "Color," not "Option 1."
- Show unavailable combinations clearly rather than letting shoppers pick a variant that can't be bought.
- Consider separate products when variants are really different products (different materials with different descriptions and reviews). On Plus, combined listings can group separate products on one page.

Categories, metafields and structured data
Standard Product Taxonomy and category metafields
Shopify says "all of your products should be assigned to a specific category" in its Standard Product Taxonomy. Choosing a category unlocks category metafields, which are standard attributes for that category. For a shirt, that includes size, neckline, sleeve length, fabric, target gender and color. Standard categories also make it easier to sell on channels that require a standardized product type, such as Google and Meta.
Custom metafields
For anything the taxonomy doesn't cover (care instructions, ingredients, warranty length, compatibility), create custom metafield definitions. You can create up to 256 definitions per resource type. Connect them to theme blocks so they display the same way on every product. Our metafields and metaobjects guide explains setup.
Structured data
Search engines read schema.org markup to understand products. Shopify's Liquid structured_data filter converts a product into schema.org markup: a Product for products without variants, or a ProductGroup for products with variants. Many current themes use it, but older or custom themes may output incomplete or duplicate markup, especially when a review app adds its own. Test a few product URLs with a rich results testing tool and make sure price, availability and reviews appear once and correctly.
Data quality for AI shopping
Agentic Storefronts, which Shopify says is "active by default for eligible stores," lets customers discover and buy your products in AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. Those channels rely on the product data in Shopify Catalog. According to Shopify's Spring '26 Edition announcement, "AI searches powered by Shopify Catalog convert at 2x the rate of those using scraped data."
Shopify's own recommendations for AI channels are practical:
- Use clear, concise product titles.
- Add detailed specifications, structured data and product attributes.
- Include sizing guides, material information and care instructions.
- Use high-quality images with descriptive alt text.
- Include comparison information with similar products.
The free Shopify Knowledge Base app lets you view and customize the FAQs that AI shopping agents use to answer questions about your store. In practice, the same work that improves your product page (precise titles, complete attributes, honest descriptions) is what improves your visibility in AI channels. See our guide to writing AI-friendly product pages.
Reviews, trust and the buy box
- Reviews near the title: a star rating and review count under the title, linking to full reviews lower down.
- Photo reviews: customer photos show real-world fit and color.
- Honest moderation: publish negative reviews and reply to them. Inauthentic reviews are another risk signal Shopify Payments watches for.
- Shipping and returns in the buy box: a one-line delivery estimate and return window next to Add to cart.
- Accelerated checkout: Shop Pay and other wallet buttons on the product page shorten the path for returning buyers.
A product page checklist
- Title names the product plainly, with no variants or promotional text.
- Category set from the Standard Product Taxonomy, with category metafields filled.
- At least front, back, detail, scale and in-use images, with alt text, and an image for every variant.
- Description leads with the benefit and answers sizing, materials, care and compatibility.
- Options named clearly, unavailable combinations handled.
- Shipping estimate and return window visible near Add to cart.
- Reviews displayed, with structured data appearing once.
- SEO title under about 70 characters and meta description under about 160.
- Page tested on mobile for speed and layout.
Conclusion
The best Shopify product pages are clear, complete and accurate: a plain title, media that answers questions, well-structured variants, filled-in category attributes and copy that tells the truth. That work now pays off three ways, on your storefront, in search and in AI shopping channels that read your catalog directly. Frequently asked questions
How many images can a Shopify product have?
Up to 250 media items (images, videos or 3D models) per product. Images must be under 20 MB and can be up to 5000 x 5000 px.
How many variants can a Shopify product have?
Up to 2,048 variants since 15 October 2025, with a maximum of three options per product. Some themes and apps don't support more than 100 variants, so test before you rely on large variant counts.
Does Shopify add product schema automatically?
Shopify provides a Liquid filter, structured_data, that outputs schema.org Product or ProductGroup markup, and many themes use it. Whether your store outputs it depends on your theme, so test your product pages.
What are category metafields?
They're standard attributes, such as size, color or fabric, that become available when you assign a product to a category in Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy. They help filters, feeds and other sales channels understand your products.
Do product pages affect selling in ChatGPT and other AI channels?
Yes. Agentic Storefronts uses the product data in Shopify Catalog, so clear titles, complete attributes and accurate descriptions affect how your products appear in AI channels as well as on your own store.
