Shopify Product Review Apps: What to Evaluate and How the Main Options Compare

By: Irina Shvaya | October 1, 2026
This guide is part of our Shopify resource hub: plans and fees, setup, every major feature, apps, marketing, operations, comparisons and migrations.

Shopify doesn't include product reviews out of the box anymore. Its own Product Reviews app shows as "not currently available on the Shopify App Store," so collecting and displaying reviews means choosing a third-party app. The good news is that the category is mature: several review apps have thousands of App Store reviews, generous free tiers and integrations with Google, Meta and the Shop app.

The decision is less about which app is "best" and more about which features you'll actually use. A small store might only need automated review requests and star ratings with structured data. A larger brand might need photo and video reviews, Google product ratings, syndication to social channels, and moderation workflows that hold up under the FTC's rules on reviews.

This guide covers what Shopify itself provides, what to evaluate in a review app, and a neutral comparison of well-known apps with pricing taken from their App Store listings on 1 October 2026. It's part of our Shopify hub. Apps are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify's own Product Reviews app is no longer available in the App Store, so reviews require a third-party app.
  • Shopify defines standard product metafields (reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count) that review apps should write to, so themes can show ratings consistently.
  • Google Product Ratings needs at least 50 reviews across all your products, submitted directly or through a supported aggregator.
  • Review markup helps search engines read your ratings, but Google says it doesn't guarantee stars in results and asks sites not to aggregate reviews from other websites.
  • The FTC's rule on consumer reviews, in effect since 21 October 2024, bans incentives conditioned on positive (or negative) sentiment and certain review suppression practices.
  • Pricing ranges from free plans to order-volume tiers, so model the cost at the order volume you expect next year.

What Shopify provides natively

There's no first-party reviews app to install today, but Shopify does provide the plumbing review apps build on:

  • Standard rating metafields. Shopify's list of standard metafield definitions includes "Product rating" (reviews.rating) and "Product rating count" (reviews.rating_count). Shopify says product rating apps should write to these and update them when a rating changes, and themes that display ratings should read them. In practice, this lets your theme show stars on collection pages and in search without depending on one app's custom code.
  • Theme app extensions. Modern review apps add their widgets as app blocks in the theme editor rather than editing theme files, which keeps uninstalls cleaner.
  • Shopify Flow. To earn the Built for Shopify badge, a reviews app must provide a Flow trigger that starts a workflow whenever a new review is collected, and an admin block on customer detail pages showing that customer's reviews. That gives you native automation, such as tagging customers who leave reviews or alerting support about 1-star reviews.

What to evaluate in a review app

Collection: requests, timing and forms

Most reviews come from automated request emails sent after fulfillment or delivery. Check whether you can time requests from delivery (not just fulfillment), send reminders, request via SMS as well as email, and let customers review several products from one message. A mobile-friendly form matters: many customers leave reviews from their phone.

Photo and video reviews

Visual reviews are where apps differ most. Some include photo and video reviews on free plans, others reserve video for paid tiers. Check upload limits, whether you can offer a discount for a photo review (allowed, as long as it isn't conditioned on a positive review), and how media galleries affect page weight.

Google product ratings and store ratings

Stars in Google Shopping ads and free listings come from Google's Product Ratings program, not from your on-site markup. According to Google's Product Ratings overview, you need at least 50 reviews across all your products, and reviews reach Google either through a supported reviews aggregator or through a feed you submit in Merchant Center. Ratings can take up to two weeks to appear after onboarding. If Google Shopping matters to you, confirm the app can send that feed and on which plan. Google treats reviews of your business overall separately, under store ratings.

Structured data and review snippets

Review apps usually add Product structured data with aggregate ratings so search engines can read them. Three points from Google's review snippet guidelines are worth knowing:

  • Google doesn't guarantee that stars will show in results, even with valid markup.
  • Marked-up review content must be readily visible on the page.
  • Google says "Don't aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites." Think carefully before marking up reviews imported from Amazon, Etsy or another platform.

Also note the self-serving rule: if a business controls the reviews about itself, pages using LocalBusiness or Organization markup aren't eligible for star review features. Store-wide testimonials marked up as Organization reviews are a common mistake. Product reviews on product pages are the standard use. Check that your theme and app don't output duplicate rating markup, which happens when both add their own. Our article on product page SEO mistakes covers related issues.

Syndication

Many apps can push reviews to other surfaces: the Shop app, Meta (Facebook and Instagram shops), TikTok Shop and Google. If you sell on those channels, check which plan includes syndication; it's often a paid-tier feature.

Moderation, AI features and data portability

Moderation and the FTC rule

Every app lets you moderate reviews, but how you moderate matters legally. The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule (16 CFR Part 465) went into effect on 21 October 2024. Among other things, it prohibits:

  • Fake reviews, including AI-generated reviews attributed to people who don't exist.
  • Compensation or incentives conditioned on a review expressing a particular sentiment, positive or negative.
  • Undisclosed reviews by company insiders (such as officers and managers).
  • Certain review suppression practices, such as using threats or intimidation to prevent or remove negative reviews.

Set clear moderation rules: remove spam, abuse, personal data and off-topic content, and apply the same rules to positive and negative reviews. The FTC's guidance gives the example that a business may exclude reviews that only discuss customer service, as long as it does so equally for positive and negative ones. On incentives, the FTC says the rule "does not prohibit giving incentives for reviews, as long as there isn't an express or implied requirement that the reviews have to express a particular sentiment." If you're unsure, get legal advice.

Q&A, AI summaries and replies

Many apps now add product Q&A, AI-generated review summaries and AI-assisted replies. These are useful on high-review products, but check that summaries are clearly labeled and that you can edit or turn them off.

Performance, data and integrations

Review widgets load on your most important pages. Test product page speed before and after installing, and prefer apps that use app blocks. Check that you can export all reviews (including media) if you switch apps, and that the app imports from your current provider. Finally, check integrations with your email platform, help desk and loyalty program.

How to choose: a short decision path

  1. List the must-haves. Request emails, star ratings, structured data and import/export are table stakes. Decide whether you need video, Google product ratings, social syndication or loyalty.
  2. Price it at next year's volume. Most paid plans scale with monthly orders, so a store doubling its orders may jump a tier.
  3. Install on a duplicate theme first. Check the widget design, mobile layout and page speed.
  4. Test the request flow end to end. Place a test order, mark it delivered and leave a review with a photo.
  5. Check the markup. Use Google's Rich Results Test on a product page to confirm one clean set of rating data.
  6. Write moderation rules down. Decide what gets removed and why, so the team applies it consistently.

Reviews also feed conversion work beyond the product page: email flows, ads and landing pages. Our ecommerce CRO tips cover how to use social proof well, and our guide to writing AI-friendly product pages explains why structured, readable review content helps AI shopping assistants too.

Migrating between review apps

Switching is common as stores grow. Before you move:

  • Export every review with ratings, dates, verified-buyer status and media from the current app.
  • Confirm the new app imports from your current provider (Judge.me's listing, for example, names Yotpo, Loox, Amazon and Etsy) and keeps the original dates.
  • Remove the old app's widgets and any leftover theme code, so you don't output two sets of stars or two sets of structured data.
  • Re-check Google Merchant Center if product ratings were coming through the old app's feed.

Conclusion

Product reviews on Shopify run through third-party apps, and the mature options cover the basics well. Choose based on the features you'll use (video, Google ratings, syndication, loyalty), price the plan at the order volume you expect, check that the app writes Shopify's standard rating metafields and outputs clean structured data, and moderate within the FTC's rules. If you want your reviews, structured data and product pages working together for search, that's part of what eSEOspace's Shopify SEO services cover.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have a free built-in reviews app?

Not anymore. Shopify's Product Reviews app listing says it is "not currently available on the Shopify App Store." Several third-party apps, including Judge.me, Junip, Loox, Okendo and Yotpo, list free plans with limits.

How do I get star ratings in Google search results?

Use a review app that adds valid Product review markup, with reviews visible on the page. Google may then show review snippets, but it doesn't guarantee them. Stars in Google Shopping come separately from Google's Product Ratings program, which needs at least 50 reviews across your products.

Can I offer a discount for leaving a review?

The FTC says its rule doesn't prohibit incentives for reviews, as long as there's no express or implied requirement that the review express a particular sentiment. A discount for any honest review is allowed in principle; a discount for a 5-star review isn't. Get legal advice for your specific program.

Can I delete negative reviews?

You can remove reviews that break clear content rules (spam, abuse, personal information, reviews about the wrong business). Apply those rules equally to positive and negative reviews, as the FTC's guidance describes. Hiding reviews just because they're negative misleads customers.

Can I import reviews from Amazon or Etsy?

Several apps support importing them. For structured data, note that Google's guidelines say not to aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites, so consider displaying imported reviews without including them in your review markup.
