Shopify SEO Apps: What They Can and Can't Do for Your Store
Shopify SEO Apps: What They Can and Can't Do for Your Store

An SEO app can save a Shopify store real time, but it can't do your SEO for you. The useful jobs are mechanical: bulk-editing title tags and meta descriptions, filling in image alt text, compressing images, finding broken links and redirecting them, and adding structured data your theme doesn't already output. The jobs no app can do (choosing what each page should rank for, writing content people want, earning links) are still yours.
Shopify also handles more SEO natively than many app listings suggest. It generates your sitemap and robots.txt, adds canonical tags, serves images through a CDN (often as WebP), and lets you edit titles, descriptions, URLs and alt text in the admin. Before you install anything, it's worth knowing which features you'd be paying for twice.
This guide covers Shopify's built-in SEO as of October 2026, what SEO apps can and can't do, which claims to be skeptical of, and a neutral comparison of well-known apps with pricing from their App Store listings. It's part of our Shopify hub.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify automatically generates sitemap.xml and robots.txt, adds canonical tags, and its themes include product structured data and title tags by default.
- SEO apps are most useful for bulk meta and alt text edits, image compression, 404 monitoring and redirects, and extra structured data.
- SEO apps are one of the few categories Shopify allows to edit theme files, so check what an app changes and how to undo it before you install.
- Be skeptical of "speed boost" scores, backlink submission features and IndexNow promises; Google lists automated link building as link spam and doesn't use IndexNow.
- Shopify allows up to 100,000 URL redirects (20,000,000 on Plus), and only from URLs that return a 404.
- The apps we checked run from free plans to about $100 a month, so the bigger cost is the time and risk of the changes they make.
What Shopify does for SEO natively
According to Shopify's SEO overview:
- Canonical tags are generated automatically to prevent duplicate content.
- Your sitemap.xml and robots.txt files are generated automatically.
- Themes generate title tags that include your store name.
- Themes include structured data (schema markup) for products.
- SSL certificates are on by default.
- You can edit the title tag, meta description and URL of products, collections, pages and blog posts, and set image alt text.
A few more native tools are worth knowing:
- Title and description guidance. Shopify lets you enter up to 70 characters in a page title but suggests keeping it to about 60 to avoid truncation, and recommends meta descriptions of around 160 characters.
- robots.txt.liquid. You can customize robots.txt by adding a robots.txt.liquid template. Shopify calls this an unsupported customization and warns that incorrect use "can result in loss of all traffic."
- URL redirects. Built into the admin under Content > Menus > View URL redirects, with filtering, bulk editing and export.
- Image delivery. Shopify's web performance guide says images are automatically optimized through its image CDN and are often served as WebP.
- Web Performance reports based on Core Web Vitals from real visitors.
- Knowledge Base app. Shopify's guide to optimizing for AI describes it as a free first-party app for customizing the FAQs that AI agents use.

What SEO apps can do well
Bulk meta titles, descriptions and alt text
Editing titles and descriptions product by product is slow on a large catalog. Apps let you apply templates (for example, "Product name | Collection | Brand") across hundreds of products, generate drafts with AI, and fill missing alt text. This is the most common reason to install one. Templates are a starting point: your best-selling and highest-traffic pages deserve hand-written titles.
Broken links and redirects
Apps can monitor 404s that real visitors hit and suggest or create redirects. Shopify's own redirect rules apply regardless of the app:
- You can redirect only from URLs that return a 404. If a URL still loads a page, the redirect won't work.
- Paths starting with /apps, /cart, /orders, /services and similar can't be redirected, and fixed paths such as /products and /collections can't be either.
- Stores can have up to 100,000 redirects, or 20,000,000 on Plus.
Shopify's URL redirect documentation lists the rest. Redirects matter most after a migration; our 301 redirect map guide covers that.
Structured data
Shopify themes already include product markup, so an app adding a second Product block can create duplicate or conflicting data. Where apps help is filling gaps: breadcrumbs, organization details, FAQ markup, return policy and shipping details in your product data, or fields your theme leaves out. After installing, test a product page with Google's Rich Results Test and confirm there's one clean set of product data.
Image compression and file names
Many apps compress images and rename files. Since Shopify already serves optimized images from its CDN, the gains are biggest when you upload very large originals. Check whether the app keeps backups of originals and for how long.
Audits and Search Console data
Audit features flag missing titles, thin descriptions, broken links and missing alt text. Some apps pull Google Search Console data into the admin. These are convenient, but they won't tell you which pages to prioritize; that takes keyword and revenue data together.
What SEO apps can't do, and claims to question
"Speed boost" scores
Some apps advertise lazy loading, minification and "instant page speed-up." Treat percentages and scores with caution. Shopify's web performance guide names installed apps among the biggest factors that affect speed and advises evaluating whether each app creates enough value to offset any performance cost. A speed app is still an app. Measure with Shopify's Web Performance reports (real-user data) before and after, rather than trusting a lab score shown inside the app. Our guide to improving Shopify page speed covers the causes that matter more, such as unused apps, heavy themes and oversized media.
Backlink submission
Be wary of features that "submit backlinks" or list your store on directories automatically. Google's spam policies define link spam as creating links primarily to manipulate rankings, and list "using automated programs or services to create links to your site" and "low-quality directory or bookmark site links" as examples.
Instant indexing
Several apps offer IndexNow submission. IndexNow's participating search engines include Bing, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yandex and Yep, but not Google. It can help with those engines; it won't speed up Google indexing. For Google, submit your sitemap in Search Console and use URL inspection.
AI search files
Some apps now generate llms.txt or agents.md files for AI search. Shopify's own guide to optimizing a store for AI focuses on detailed product information, structured product attributes and FAQs, and doesn't call for these files. For selling through AI channels, Shopify's agentic storefronts use your product catalog data directly; see our guide to Shopify agentic commerce.
Rankings themselves
No app can guarantee rankings. An "SEO score" of 100 means the app's checklist passes, not that the page answers what searchers want.
How to evaluate an SEO app
- What it changes, and where. Built for Shopify rules generally bar apps from editing theme files through the Asset API, but SEO apps are one of the listed exceptions. Shopify's SEO FAQ notes that an SEO app may create extra Liquid files that generate title tags, and that missing titles or H1s are usually caused by custom code or an app. Ask what the app writes to your theme and how it's removed.
- Uninstall behavior. Shopify warns that some apps add theme code that isn't removed when you uninstall. Edits saved to Shopify's own fields, such as meta titles, alt text and redirects, generally live in Shopify rather than in the app; injected scripts and markup may not be cleaned up.
- Overlap with your theme. Check for duplicate structured data, duplicate breadcrumbs and conflicting canonical or noindex tags.
- Pricing limits. Plans cap images, AI generations, audited pages or keywords. Check the cap that matches your catalog size.
- Built for Shopify, reviews and support. The badge requires, among other things, that the app not reduce storefront Lighthouse performance by more than ten points. Read recent reviews, not just the average.
- Markets and languages. If you sell in several languages, confirm the app handles translated titles and descriptions.

All five listings showed the Built for Shopify badge on the day we checked. Several of the features listed (backlink submission, IndexNow, llms.txt) are the ones we suggest treating with caution above; their presence on a listing isn't a recommendation.
A safe way to install an SEO app
- Record a baseline. Export Search Console performance, note Web Performance report figures, and save a copy of a few product pages' source.
- Duplicate your theme before letting any app edit theme files.
- Turn on one feature at a time. Start with bulk alt text or meta templates on a small collection, then review the output by hand.
- Check structured data with the Rich Results Test for duplicates.
- Re-measure after two to four weeks using real-user performance data and Search Console, not the app's internal score.
- Document what the app changed so you can remove it cleanly later.
Conclusion
Shopify covers the technical foundations of SEO out of the box. An SEO app earns its place by saving time on repetitive work: bulk meta and alt text, 404 monitoring, redirects and filling structured data gaps. Be skeptical of speed scores, automated backlinks and indexing promises, check what the app writes to your theme, and measure results with Search Console and real-user data. If you'd rather have a specialist handle keyword strategy, technical fixes and content, that's what eSEOspace's Shopify SEO services do.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an SEO app on Shopify?
Not necessarily. Shopify generates sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags and product structured data, and lets you edit titles, descriptions, URLs and alt text. An app is worth it mainly for bulk editing on large catalogs and for 404 monitoring.
Can an SEO app hurt my store?
It can if it adds duplicate structured data, conflicting tags, heavy scripts, or theme code that stays after uninstalling. Duplicate your theme first and test changes one at a time.
Will an SEO app make my store faster?
Sometimes, for example by compressing very large images. But any app can also add weight. Check Shopify's Web Performance reports before and after rather than relying on the app's own score.
How many redirects can a Shopify store have?
Up to 100,000 URL redirects, or 20,000,000 on Shopify Plus. Redirects work only from URLs that return a 404.
Does IndexNow help with Google?
No. Google isn't an IndexNow participant. Use Google Search Console to submit your sitemap and inspect URLs.
