Shopify Page Builder Apps vs Theme Sections: Performance, Lock-In and Costs

This guide is part of our Shopify resource hub: plans and fees, setup, every major feature, apps, marketing, operations, comparisons and migrations.

Page builder apps let you design Shopify pages by dragging elements onto a canvas instead of working within your theme's sections. A few years ago they filled a real gap. Today, Shopify's own theme editor does much of what they used to: Online Store 2.0 themes support sections on every page, and the Horizon theme family (launched in May 2025) is built on theme blocks that can be nested and rearranged, with AI block generation built in.

That doesn't make page builders obsolete. They still offer more layout freedom, landing page templates, A/B testing and funnels that most themes don't. But they come with trade-offs: extra code on the pages they build, a monthly subscription, and content that may depend on the app to render. If you uninstall, you need to know what happens to those pages.

This guide compares page builders with native theme sections and blocks as of October 2026, explains the performance and lock-in trade-offs, and lists well-known page builder apps with pricing from their App Store listings. It's part of our Shopify hub.

Key Takeaways

  • Online Store 2.0 themes support sections on every template, up to 25 sections per template and 1,250 blocks across them.
  • Shopify's Horizon themes are built on theme blocks and include AI block generation, which covers many layouts that once needed a page builder.
  • Page builders still add value for landing pages, campaign templates, A/B testing and teams that want design freedom without a developer.
  • Every app can affect speed; Shopify lists installed apps among the biggest factors in store performance.
  • Lock-in is the main risk: ask how pages are stored, whether they render without the app, and what code is left behind on uninstall.
  • Most page builders price by the number of published pages or sections, from free single-page plans to a few hundred dollars a month.

Native options: sections, blocks and Horizon

Online Store 2.0 sections and blocks

In Online Store 2.0 themes, every page template is built from sections, and sections contain blocks. You add, remove and reorder them in the theme editor without code. Shopify's theme structure documentation sets the limits: up to 25 sections per template and up to 1,250 blocks across all sections in a template. You can create several templates (for example, a different product template for a bundle) and assign them to specific products, collections or pages.

Horizon and theme blocks

Shopify launched Horizon in its Summer '25 Edition. The Horizon collection is a set of 10 free themes built on one system. Shopify describes Horizon as built using theme blocks, which can be nested inside each other, giving more layout flexibility than older section-and-block themes. Horizon also includes AI tools for generating blocks, and Shopify Magic's theme and theme-block generation is free on every plan.

Dynamic content with metafields and metaobjects

Much of what stores use page builders for is repeated content per product: size charts, ingredient lists, comparison tables, FAQs. Storing that in metafields and metaobjects and connecting it to theme blocks as dynamic sources keeps it consistent across products and editable in one place. Our guide to Shopify metafields and metaobjects explains how.

Canvas

On 1 October 2026, Shopify announced Canvas, a design surface where merchants build with Sidekick, rolling out over the following days. Shopify says Canvas isn't replacing the existing editor yet. It's worth watching, but too new to plan a site around.

When a page builder still makes sense

  • Campaign landing pages that marketing launches often and that don't fit your theme's templates.
  • A/B testing and funnels. Several builders include page-level A/B tests, heatmaps or sales funnels on higher plans.
  • Older themes. If you're on a vintage (pre-2.0) theme and can't migrate yet, a builder can give you flexible pages in the meantime.
  • Design-led teams without developers who need pixel-level layout control.

When it doesn't: if you mainly want a few new homepage or product page layouts, a modern theme (or a developer building a few custom sections) is usually faster, cheaper over time and easier to maintain. Our comparison of custom versus premium themes looks at the cost side.

Performance trade-offs

Shopify's web performance guide names the apps you've installed as one of the biggest factors in store speed, and advises checking that each app creates enough value to offset any performance cost. Page builders are no exception. The pages they produce can carry extra markup, CSS and scripts compared with native sections, and features like animations, sliders and video add weight.

How to manage it:

  • Measure real users. Use Shopify's Web Performance reports, which are based on Core Web Vitals from actual visitors, to compare builder pages with native ones.
  • Use the builder only where it adds value. Building your entire store in a page builder puts all of it on the app's code path.
  • Keep media lean. Compress images, limit autoplay video and avoid stacking several sliders.
  • Check the Built for Shopify badge. Among its requirements, an app must not reduce the storefront Lighthouse performance score by more than ten points.

Our guide to improving Shopify page speed covers the wider picture.

Lock-in and what happens on uninstall

This is the question to ask before you build anything important.

  • How are pages stored? Some builders publish content into your theme as templates or sections; others render content from the app. Ask the vendor whether a published page still displays, and looks right, if you cancel.
  • What's left behind? Shopify warns that some apps add code to your theme that isn't removed automatically when you uninstall. Its uninstall guide suggests checking the listing or contacting the developer for removal steps first.
  • Does it edit theme files? Shopify's preferred approach is theme app extensions (app blocks and app embeds), which don't edit theme code. Built for Shopify apps must not use the Asset API to modify theme files, with narrow exceptions. Ask how the builder installs itself.
  • Can you export? Check whether you can export pages or templates, and in what format.
  • Pricing changes. Many plans cap published pages or sections. If the price rises, can you unpublish selectively without breaking navigation?

Before switching builders or removing one, list every page it powers, rebuild them natively or in the new tool, set redirects for any URL changes, and only then uninstall. Our guide on customizing a theme without breaking it covers safe workflows.

How to evaluate a page builder

  • Pricing basis: published pages, sections, AI credits or features. Count the pages you'll realistically keep live.
  • Theme compatibility: whether it works with your theme, including Horizon, and whether it can build sections you use inside the native editor.
  • SEO controls: editable titles, meta descriptions and URLs, heading structure, image alt text, and no duplicate structured data.
  • Markets and languages: support for translated content and Shopify Markets if you sell internationally.
  • Integrations: reviews, subscriptions and other apps you rely on should render inside builder pages.
  • Collaboration: drafts, version history and roles if several people edit.
  • Support and reviews: read recent reviews and check how the developer responds to issues.

A decision checklist

  1. List the pages you want to build and why your current theme can't do them.
  2. Try a Horizon theme or your theme's latest version on a duplicate first; many layouts are now possible natively.
  3. If you still need a builder, trial it on one landing page and measure real-user performance against a native page.
  4. Get a written answer on uninstall behavior and exports.
  5. Price the plan for the number of pages you'll keep live a year from now.

Conclusion

Native sections, theme blocks and Horizon now cover much of what page builders were installed for. Builders still earn their place for campaign landing pages, testing and design-heavy teams, but they add code and a dependency. Use them where they add clear value, measure performance with real-user data, and understand exactly what happens to your pages if you leave. If you'd rather have custom sections built into your theme instead, eSEOspace's Shopify website design team does that work.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a page builder app with a modern Shopify theme?

Often not. Online Store 2.0 themes support sections on every page, and Horizon themes add nested theme blocks and AI block generation. A builder is most useful for frequent campaign landing pages and built-in A/B testing.

Do page builders slow down Shopify stores?

They can. Shopify lists installed apps among the biggest factors in store speed. Compare builder pages with native pages using Shopify's Web Performance reports before rolling a builder out widely.

What happens to my pages if I uninstall a page builder?

It depends on the app. Some pages may stop displaying or lose styling, and some apps leave code in your theme. Ask the developer before you build, and rebuild important pages before uninstalling.

Is Horizon free?

Yes. The Horizon collection on the Shopify Theme Store lists 10 themes, all free.

How many sections can a Shopify page have?

Up to 25 sections per template, with up to 1,250 blocks across all sections in that template.
