Shopify Liquid Themes vs Hydrogen (2026): When Is Headless Worth It?

This guide is part of our Shopify resource hub: plans and fees, setup, every major feature, apps, marketing, operations, comparisons and migrations.

Every Shopify storefront is built one of two ways. The standard way is a theme written in Liquid, Shopify's templating language, hosted and rendered by Shopify and edited by merchants in the theme editor. The headless way separates the frontend from Shopify's backend: you build a custom storefront, usually with Hydrogen (Shopify's React-based framework), host it on Oxygen or elsewhere, and pull products, carts and customers through Shopify's APIs.

As of October 2026, a Liquid theme is the right choice for most stores. Online Store 2.0 and the Horizon theme family give merchants flexible, block-based pages with no hosting to manage, and nearly every Shopify app supports themes. Hydrogen is worth it when you need an experience a theme can't deliver, when you're combining Shopify with a separate CMS or other systems, or when you already have a React team and the budget to run a custom frontend long term.

This guide compares the two on architecture, performance, cost, team skills and app compatibility, using Shopify's developer documentation. For more context, see our Shopify vs headless commerce guide and the Shopify hub.

Key Takeaways

  • Liquid themes are hosted by Shopify, edited visually in the theme editor and supported by most apps through theme app extensions.
  • Hydrogen is a React Router-based framework; Oxygen hosting is included "at no extra charge" on paid plans, but development and maintenance aren't.
  • Basic, Grow and Advanced get 1 public headless storefront environment; Plus gets 25.
  • Many apps add storefront features through theme app extensions, which plug into Online Store 2.0 themes, so headless builds need apps that support custom storefronts or custom integration work.
  • Shopify itself advises making sure a merchant can handle "the added costs and complexity" of a custom storefront and has development resources after launch.

How a Liquid theme works

Shopify's theme architecture docs describe a theme as layout files, templates, section groups, sections, blocks and snippets. JSON templates hold sections that merchants can add, remove and reorder; sections contain blocks; Liquid generates the HTML. Online Store 2.0 introduced sections on every page, and the Horizon theme family (10 free themes launched in May 2025) is built on theme blocks for more layout flexibility. Each template can hold up to 25 sections and 1,250 blocks.

What you get with a theme:

  • No hosting to run: Shopify serves the storefront from its own infrastructure and CDN.
  • Merchant editing: marketers change pages in the theme editor without a developer.
  • App compatibility: theme app extensions let apps add app blocks and app embeds without editing theme code. Shopify says they "can integrate with Online Store 2.0 themes."
  • Low starting cost: Horizon themes are free, and paid Theme Store themes ranged from $100 to $500 (one-time) on 1 Oct 2026.

The limits: you work within Shopify's routing (/products/, /collections/, /pages/), Liquid's server-rendered model and the section-and-block structure. Complex app-like interactions are possible with JavaScript but can get heavy. See our Shopify themes guide for choosing and customizing one.

How Hydrogen and Oxygen work

Shopify's Hydrogen fundamentals page describes three parts:

  • Hydrogen: "React Router apps that are preconfigured with Shopify-specific features," with components and utilities pre-wired for the Storefront API. Hydrogen moved from Remix to React Router 7 in May 2025.
  • React Router: handles routing, data loading, server-side rendering and progressive enhancement.
  • Oxygen: "Shopify's global serverless hosting platform," a worker-based runtime built on Cloudflare's open-source workerd, with preview environments, GitHub deployments and rollbacks.

You install the Hydrogen sales channel to publish products to the storefront and manage Oxygen deployments. Oxygen is available on Starter, Basic, Grow, Advanced, Plus and Pause and build plans, but not on the Agentic plan. Since 2026 it's also available on development stores and trial plans for building before launch. You can self-host Hydrogen instead, and a developer preview released in June 2026 moves Hydrogen's commerce logic into a framework-agnostic core that can deploy to Vercel with a Next.js starter.

Checkout stays on Shopify: a headless cart created through the Storefront API returns a checkout URL that sends shoppers to Shopify's checkout, so checkout customization follows the same plan rules as a theme store.

Performance

Both approaches can be fast, and both can be slow. Shopify describes Hydrogen as fast by default because React Router apps "default to server-side rendering" and progressive enhancement "typically deliver[s] smaller bundle sizes." Oxygen runs at the edge with strict limits: workers must be 10 MB or less, start in 400 milliseconds or less and use at most 128 MB of memory.

Liquid themes are also server-rendered by Shopify, and well-built Online Store 2.0 and Horizon themes perform well. In practice, theme performance problems usually come from app scripts, oversized images and third-party tags rather than Liquid itself. Shopify's script tag deprecation helps here: apps can no longer create or update storefront script tags after 1 Oct 2026, and existing ones stop running on 1 Mar 2027, pushing apps toward theme app extensions. Our guide to improving Shopify page speed covers the common fixes.

The honest summary: headless can deliver a faster, more app-like experience for complex frontends, but a disciplined theme build often closes most of the gap at a fraction of the cost. Measure your current Core Web Vitals and find the real bottlenecks before assuming headless will fix them.

Cost and team requirements

The platform side is similar: Hydrogen and Oxygen are free with a paid Shopify plan, and the Hydrogen sales channel app lists the price as "Free." The difference is people and time.

  • Theme store: a theme (free or $100 to $500), customization by a Shopify developer, apps for extra features, and merchants managing content themselves.
  • Hydrogen store: a React team (in-house or agency) to build the storefront, rebuild features that apps would have provided through the theme, integrate a CMS if marketers need to edit content, and keep the codebase current as Hydrogen, React Router and the Storefront API evolve. Shopify releases a new API version every quarter, and each is supported for at least 12 months.

Shopify's own custom storefront guide puts it plainly: "before taking on the commitment, make sure that the merchant is comfortable with taking on the added costs and complexity of managing a custom storefront solution. The merchant should also have development resources available to manage the ongoing integration after launch."

App compatibility

This is the factor teams most often underestimate. Many apps add their storefront UI (Shopify's examples include product reviews, prices, ratings and 3D models) through theme app extensions, which plug into Online Store 2.0 themes. On a headless storefront, those blocks don't render automatically. You'll need to:

  • Check whether each app supports headless storefronts or offers an API or SDK. Shopify maintains a collection of apps for custom storefronts on the App Store.
  • Rebuild the frontend for apps that only expose data through APIs.
  • Replace apps that only work with themes, or build the feature yourself.

Backend apps (ERP sync, fulfillment, email, Shopify Flow automations and Shopify Functions) work the same either way, because they act on Shopify's backend rather than the storefront. Audit your app list before choosing Hydrogen; a long list of storefront apps is a strong argument for staying on a theme.

SEO considerations

Hydrogen's server-side rendering means search engines receive full HTML, but you're responsible for things a theme gives you by default: meta tags, canonical URLs, structured data, sitemaps, redirects and URL structure. Shopify recommends keeping product URLs at /products/:handle or adding server-side redirects to them, and supporting cart permalinks. Oxygen doesn't support proxies in front of deployments, because they can conflict with its bot mitigation and "cause SEO issues." When moving an existing theme store to headless, treat it like a migration and map every URL; our Shopify to Hydrogen migration guide covers the steps.

When headless is worth it

Choose Hydrogen (or another headless stack) when

  • You need an experience a theme can't reasonably deliver, such as a highly interactive configurator or an app-like browsing flow.
  • Content and commerce must live together from a headless CMS, or you're serving several frontends (web, app, in-store screens) from one Shopify backend. See our overview of headless CMS development.
  • Your team already works in React and can own the frontend long term.
  • You're on Plus and want multiple custom storefronts (up to 25 public environments).

Stay with a Liquid theme when

  • Marketers need to edit pages daily without developers.
  • You rely on several storefront apps that use theme app extensions.
  • Your performance issues trace to apps, images and scripts rather than the theme architecture.
  • You don't have budget for ongoing frontend development.

Conclusion

A Liquid theme on Online Store 2.0 or Horizon is the efficient default: hosted, editable by merchants and compatible with the app ecosystem. Hydrogen gives you full control over the frontend with free Oxygen hosting, but you pay for that control in development, app integration and ongoing maintenance. Go headless when a specific requirement justifies it, not as a general performance upgrade. eSEOspace builds both theme and headless Shopify storefronts through our Shopify development services.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hydrogen free?

The framework is free, and Oxygen hosting is included at no extra charge on paid Shopify plans (not the Agentic plan). The real cost is building and maintaining a custom React storefront.

Is Hydrogen faster than a Liquid theme?

It can be, thanks to server-side rendering and edge hosting, but a well-optimized theme is often fast enough. Slow theme stores are usually slowed by apps, images and third-party scripts, which you'd need to fix on either architecture.

Do Shopify apps work with Hydrogen?

Backend apps do. Apps that add storefront features through theme app extensions don't render on a headless storefront automatically, so you need apps that support custom storefronts or custom integration.

Can I use the theme editor with Hydrogen?

No. The theme editor works with themes. Headless stores usually manage content through a headless CMS, Shopify metaobjects or custom tools.

Which Shopify plan do I need for Hydrogen?

Any paid plan from Basic up includes Oxygen and 1 public headless storefront environment. Plus includes 25.
