Shopify Subscription Apps: Shopify Subscriptions, Selling Plans and What to Evaluate
Shopify Subscription Apps: Shopify Subscriptions, Selling Plans and What to Evaluate

Subscriptions on Shopify run through apps, but every modern subscription app sits on the same native foundation: Shopify's selling plans, subscription contracts and stored payment methods. Customers subscribe in Shopify's own checkout, renewals are billed through your payment provider, and orders land in your admin like any other order. The app you choose decides the experience around that core: the product page widget, the customer portal, retention tools, analytics and pricing.
Shopify offers a free first-party app, Shopify Subscriptions, which covers the basics well. Third-party apps add build-a-box, advanced cancellation flows, loyalty, deeper analytics and migration help, and they charge for it in very different ways, from flat monthly fees to a percentage of every renewal.
This guide explains how subscriptions work on Shopify as of October 2026, what the native app does and doesn't do, what to evaluate, and a neutral comparison of well-known apps with pricing taken from their App Store listings on 1 October 2026. It's part of our Shopify hub. Apps are listed alphabetically, not ranked.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify Subscriptions is a free first-party app that handles auto-billed subscriptions, discounts, skip/pause/cancel and POS sales.
- All modern subscription apps use Shopify's selling plan and subscription contract APIs, so checkout and orders stay native.
- To sell subscriptions you need a supported gateway: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen or Stripe.
- New Built for Shopify requirements for subscription apps take effect on 1 December 2026, including customer account UI extensions and theme app blocks.
- Third-party pricing models range from free tiers to monthly fees plus 1% or more of subscription revenue, so model total cost at your expected volume.
How subscriptions work on Shopify
Shopify's subscription documentation describes two main models:
- Pay per delivery ("subscribe and save"). The customer pays for each delivery, and a new order is created at each interval.
- Prepaid. The customer pays once upfront and receives products on a schedule until the term is fulfilled.
Underneath, there are four building blocks:
| Building block | What it does |
|---|---|
| Selling plan groups and selling plans | Define the purchase options attached to products and variants, for example a "Subscribe and save" group containing "Deliver weekly" and "Deliver monthly" plans |
| Policies | Each plan carries billing, delivery and pricing policies, such as a recurring 10% discount or a fixed price for the subscription's duration |
| Subscription contracts | The agreement between customer and merchant for recurring purchases, created when the customer checks out |
| Customer payment methods | Stored payment methods used to bill renewals without the customer going through checkout again |
Two practical details from the selling plans documentation: subscription-specific shipping rates are configured in the app through delivery profiles, and they don't appear in Shopify's Shipping and delivery settings. And legacy subscription apps built before these APIs can keep serving existing installs, but all new installs and apps should use the Subscription APIs.
At checkout, Shopify shows the delivery frequency and a purchase option agreement: by proceeding, the customer confirms they understand they're buying a subscription. That disclosure refers to your cancellation policy and can't be removed, so publish a clear subscription policy in Settings > Policies.
Requirements before you start
According to Shopify's subscription considerations:
- Payment gateway. You must use Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen or Stripe, subject to your region and the gateway's terms. With Shopify Payments, customers can use accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. Without Shopify Payments active, third-party transaction fees apply.
- Payment methods. Customers need a method that can be billed for renewals. Local, manual or non-card methods might not be available for subscriptions.
- Sales channels. Subscriptions work on the online store, Shopify POS, the Shop app and custom storefronts. Subscription-only products (with no one-time option) can be sold only on the Online Store channel.
- Draft orders and gift cards. Subscriptions can't be used with draft orders, and gift cards apply only to the first payment.
Plan costs matter too, because third-party gateway fees fall by plan (2% on Basic down to 0.2% on Plus). Our Shopify pricing plans guide lays out the full fee table.
The native option: Shopify Subscriptions
Shopify Subscriptions is free and built and supported by Shopify. Its listing and help pages describe:
- Auto-billed subscriptions renewing weekly, monthly or yearly, with several frequency options per plan.
- Discounts as a dollar amount, percentage, buy X get Y or fixed amount.
- Customer self-service through customer accounts: skip, pause, resume or cancel, and update payment and shipping details.
- A subscription widget for product pages and customizable email templates for confirmations and payment reminders.
- Reporting on active, paused and canceled subscriptions.
- Selling subscriptions in person through Shopify POS.
- Transferring existing subscription contracts into the app.
Limitations to check: Shopify states that bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app, and the order edits API doesn't support subscriptions. There's no built-in build-a-box, loyalty program or advanced retention flows. On 1 October 2026 the listing showed 3.7 stars from 836 reviews, a sign that some merchants outgrow it.
It's a sensible default for stores launching a straightforward replenishment offer (coffee, supplements, pet food) that want zero added fees. Many stores start here and move to a third-party app when they need bundles, gifting or deeper retention tooling.
What to evaluate in a subscription app
Native APIs and Built for Shopify status
Shopify is raising the bar for this category. New Built for Shopify requirements for subscription apps take effect on 1 December 2026. According to the requirements, a BFS subscription app must use the selling plan, subscription contract and customer payment method APIs; add subscription options to product pages with an Online Store 2.0 theme app block; show the plan name, price and savings on product, cart and order pages, matching your theme's styling; let customers manage subscriptions through customer account UI extensions; and support the Customer Account API for authentication. If you're still on legacy customer accounts, the customer portal is one more reason to upgrade.
Customer portal and retention tools
Most churn decisions happen in the portal. Look for one-click skip, swap and reschedule, passwordless access, and a cancellation flow that offers alternatives (pause, skip, discount) without hiding the cancel button. Making cancellation hard is a poor customer experience, and rules on automatic renewals and cancellation vary by state and country, so get advice on the rules where you sell.
Failed payment recovery (dunning)
Renewals fail when cards expire or are declined. Check how many retries the app makes, on what schedule, and how it notifies customers.
Bundles, build-a-box and prepaid
If you plan to sell curated or customer-built boxes, confirm the app supports them, because the native app doesn't combine bundles with subscriptions. Check prepaid support and gifting if those are part of your model.
Pricing model
This is where apps differ most. Some charge a flat monthly fee, some cap free plans by subscriber count or subscription revenue, and some add a percentage per transaction. A 1% fee on $50,000 of monthly subscription revenue is $500 a month on top of the plan fee, so model it.
Migration and data portability
Ask how the app migrates existing contracts and payment methods in and out. Moving subscribers between apps is the riskiest part of switching, and a good vendor will have a documented, zero-downtime process.
Integrations
Check connections to your email and SMS platform, loyalty program, help desk and analytics. Subscription lifecycle emails (upcoming renewal, failed payment, win-back) are where much of the value is. Our guide to abandoned cart, post-purchase and win-back flows covers the email side.
Well-known Shopify subscription apps compared
Listed alphabetically. Pricing models, ratings and Built for Shopify status are as shown on each app's Shopify App Store listing on 1 October 2026. Plans change often, so confirm on the listing before installing.

| Shopify Subscriptions (Shopify) | First-party subscriptions with discounts, self-service and POS support | Free | Not shown | 3.7 (836) |
| Skio, a Recharge Company (Skio) | Subscriptions with customer portal, cancel-flow builder, build-a-box and migration | Scale $599/month (or $5,988/year) + 1% + 20¢ transaction fee | Not shown | 5.0 (242) |
| Smartrr Subscriptions (smartrr) | Subscriptions with branded portal, prepaid and sequential subscriptions, loyalty on higher tiers | Launch $99, Grow $299, Excel from $499 per month, each + 1% of subscriber GMV | Not shown | 5.0 (71) |
"Not shown" means the badge wasn't displayed on the listing when we checked. Note that Skio's listing describes it as "a Recharge Company."
A worked cost comparison
Imagine a store with 1,000 active subscribers at $40 per renewal, or $40,000 in monthly subscription revenue. Using the listing prices above:
- Shopify Subscriptions: $0 in app fees.
- A plan at $99/month + 1.0% per transaction: about $99 + $400 = $499 a month.
- A plan at $99/month + 1.49% + 19¢ per transaction: about $99 + $596 + $190 = $885 a month.
- A flat-fee plan with 0% transaction fees: the plan fee only, but check which tier your revenue or subscriber count falls into.
These figures exclude payment processing, which you pay regardless. The cheapest app isn't automatically right: a better portal and dunning can easily recover more revenue than the fee difference. But you should know the number before you choose.
Launch checklist
- Confirm your gateway supports subscriptions and that Shopify Payments is active if you want accelerated checkouts.
- Upgrade to current customer accounts so subscribers get a modern portal.
- Publish a subscription policy covering renewal timing, skipping and cancellation.
- Set up subscription shipping rates in the app if they differ from one-time orders.
- Test the full journey: subscribe, receive the confirmation, skip, change frequency, update a card and cancel.
- Build lifecycle emails for upcoming renewals, failed payments and win-back.
Conclusion
Shopify's subscription stack is native at the core, which makes the app decision mostly about portal quality, retention tools, bundles and price. Start with Shopify Subscriptions if your offer is simple; consider a third-party app when you need build-a-box, advanced cancellation flows or deeper analytics, and model the transaction fees at your real volume. From 1 December 2026, the Built for Shopify badge in this category will also signal support for customer account extensions and Shopify's subscription APIs. If no app fits your model, eSEOspace's Shopify app development team builds custom subscription features on the same APIs.
