Shopify Loyalty and Referral Apps: What to Evaluate Before You Install
Shopify Loyalty and Referral Apps: What to Evaluate Before You Install

Shopify gives you the building blocks for a loyalty program, but not the program itself. The admin includes store credit, customer segments, discounts, Shopify Messaging and Shopify Flow. Points, VIP tiers and referral tracking come from apps in the Shopify App Store, and there are many to choose from.
Most loyalty apps do the same core job: customers earn points for purchases and other actions, then redeem them for discounts, free shipping, products or store credit. Referral programs give a reward to the existing customer and a discount to the friend they invite. The differences between apps show up in pricing (usually tied to monthly orders), where customers can redeem (online, at checkout, in store), and how well the app fits the rest of your stack.
This guide explains what Shopify provides natively, what to check before you commit, and a neutral comparison of well-known apps with pricing models taken from their App Store listings on 1 October 2026. It's part of our Shopify hub. Apps are listed alphabetically, not ranked.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify's admin has no built-in points or VIP-tier program, but native store credit, customer segments, Flow and Messaging cover a lot of the plumbing.
- Native store credit works only with the current version of customer accounts (not legacy accounts) and only on the online store, POS and Shop.
- Most loyalty apps price by monthly orders, so model the cost at next year's order volume, not today's.
- Redeeming points inside checkout depends on checkout UI extensions, which Shopify limits to Plus for the information, shipping and payment steps.
- Referral apps differ most in fraud controls and in fee structure; one well-known app adds a success fee on referral sales.
- Points are a liability you're promising to honor, so set expiry rules and reward values on purpose, not by default.
What Shopify provides natively
Before you install anything, it helps to know which loyalty features Shopify already handles.
Store credit
Shopify has native store credit that you can issue from a customer's profile. Shopify's store credit documentation lists loyalty and referral rewards as typical uses. The details that matter for a loyalty program:
- Customers can apply store credit at checkout only when they're signed in through customer accounts or using Shop Pay. Store credit isn't available for legacy customer accounts, which Shopify deprecated on 26 February 2026.
- Store credit works as a payment method only on the online store, Shopify POS and Shop. It can't be used on draft orders or edited orders.
- Customers apply their full balance; they can't choose a partial amount.
- You can issue less than $15,000 USD of store credit on a single customer account.
- Expiration is set each time you issue credit. There's no store-wide default expiry, and Shopify tells merchants to check local laws first.
- For stores created on or after 12 May 2025, orders paid partly with store credit are charged third-party transaction fees on the store credit amount. The fee is waived on Plus with Shopify Payments.
Several loyalty apps can issue rewards as Shopify store credit rather than one-off discount codes, which keeps the balance visible in the customer's account. If you're still on legacy accounts, read our guide to Shopify customer accounts first.
Segments, discounts, Messaging and Flow
Without an app, you can approximate a simple VIP program: build a customer segment (for example, customers with three or more orders), give that segment a discount, and email it through Shopify Messaging. Shopify Flow, which is free on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, can tag customers when they cross a spend threshold. What you don't get natively is a points ledger, a rewards widget, tier progress, or referral links with attribution and fraud checks. That's what the apps add.
Sidekick App Extensions
In the Spring '26 Edition (17 June 2026), Shopify said Sidekick App Extensions were live for 15+ partners, naming Klaviyo, Loop and Smile. In practice, that means some apps can now be queried or managed through Sidekick in your admin. It's a nice extra, not a reason to choose an app on its own.
How loyalty and referral programs work
Points programs
Customers earn points for purchases (usually per dollar spent) and for actions such as creating an account, a birthday, following you on social media or leaving a review. They redeem points for rewards. The economics come down to two numbers you set: how many points a dollar earns, and what a point is worth when redeemed. A program that gives 1 point per $1 and lets 100 points buy a $5 reward is effectively a 5% rebate, before you account for points that are never redeemed.
VIP tiers
Tiers reward your best customers with better earn rates, exclusive products, early access or free shipping once they pass a spend or order threshold. On many apps, tiers sit on a higher plan than basic points, so check which plan you'd need.
Referral programs
The referrer shares a link or code; the friend gets a first-order discount; the referrer gets points, credit or a discount after the friend's order. The weak points are self-referrals and coupon-sharing sites. Look for fraud controls (several listings name "anti-cheat" or "fraud protection" features) and rules such as rewarding the referrer only after the friend's order is fulfilled.
Store credit, gift cards and cashback
Some apps focus on credit rather than points: they issue store credit or gift cards as rewards, for returns or for cashback campaigns. These can work well if you want a reward customers understand without a points conversion.
What to evaluate in a loyalty app
Pricing model and order caps
Nearly every app on our table prices by monthly orders, with overage charges once you pass the plan's cap. A plan that looks cheap at 400 orders a month can cost several times more at 2,500. Price the plan at the order volume you expect in 12 months, including peak months like November and December.
Where customers can redeem
- Online store: every app covers this, usually through a widget and a loyalty page.
- Checkout: Shopify's checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps are available only on Plus, which is why several listings mark "Redeem at checkout" as a Plus feature. On other plans, redemption usually happens before checkout (in the widget or cart).
- In store: if you sell in person, confirm the app supports Shopify POS on the plan you'd buy. See our Shopify POS guide for the POS side.
- Customer accounts: apps that use customer account extensions can show balances and tiers inside the account page.
Built for Shopify, reviews and support
The Built for Shopify badge means an app met Shopify's requirements for performance, design and integration. Among them, the app must not reduce the storefront Lighthouse performance score by more than ten points. The badge isn't a guarantee, but it's a useful filter. Read recent reviews (sorted by newest) rather than relying on the star average, and look at how the developer responds to problems.
Integrations
Loyalty data is most useful in email and SMS. Check that the app passes points balances and tier status to your email platform, and whether that integration is on your plan; several listings cap integrations by tier. Also check reviews apps (points for reviews), subscription apps (points on renewals) and help desks. Our guide to Shopify email and SMS apps covers that side.
Data ownership and exit
Ask how you'd leave. Can you export every customer's points balance, tier and referral history? Will the next app import it? Customers notice when points disappear in a migration, so this matters more than it seems on day one.
Performance
Loyalty widgets load on every page. Test page speed on a duplicate theme before and after installing, and prefer apps that add their widgets through app embeds and app blocks rather than editing theme code.

"Not shown" means the listing didn't display the badge when we checked, not that the app is poor. Ratings and review counts change daily.
Designing the program before you pick the app
The app is the easy part. The decisions that determine whether a program pays for itself are yours:
- Set the reward value deliberately. Work out the effective rebate (points per dollar times the value of a point) and compare it with your gross margin by product category. A 5% rebate on a 20% margin product is a quarter of your profit.
- Decide what earns points. Purchases, account creation and reviews are common. Be careful with actions that are easy to game, such as social follows.
- Exclude what you can't afford to discount. Several apps let you exclude collections or products from earning or redemption. Gift cards and low-margin items are common exclusions.
- Choose an expiry policy. Points that never expire are a growing liability. Points that expire too fast annoy customers. Check local rules on expiring credit before you decide, and say clearly what happens.
- Plan the referral reward. A common pattern is a discount for the friend and a reward for the referrer only after the friend's order is fulfilled and past your return window.
- Write the terms. Publish program terms next to your other store policies, covering earning, redemption, expiry, and your right to change or end the program. Our guide to Shopify store policies covers where policies live.
Measuring whether loyalty works
Loyalty apps report "loyalty-attributed revenue," and those numbers deserve skepticism: your best customers would have bought anyway. Better questions are whether members' repeat purchase rate and time between orders improve relative to similar non-members, and whether that lift exceeds the cost of rewards and the app. If you can, compare a period before launch with a period after, or hold back a group of customers from promotions. Track redemption rate too: a very low rate means customers don't value the rewards, and a very high one may mean the rewards are too generous.
Switching loyalty apps
If you move apps, export every member's balance, tier and lifetime spend, confirm the new app can import them, and tell customers before the switch. Remove the old app's widgets and app embeds afterward, and check that no old discount codes are still active. If rewards were issued as Shopify store credit, those balances stay in Shopify regardless of the app.
Conclusion
A loyalty or referral program on Shopify means choosing an app, but the native pieces (store credit, segments, Flow and Messaging) matter more than they used to. Decide the economics first, price the app at next year's order volume, check where customers can redeem on your plan, and make sure you can take your data with you. Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have a built-in loyalty program?
Not a points or tier program. Shopify has native store credit, customer segments, discounts, Shopify Messaging and Shopify Flow, which you can combine into a basic VIP offer. Points, tiers and referral tracking need an app.
Can customers redeem points at checkout?
Inside checkout itself, generally only on Shopify Plus, because checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps are Plus-only. On other plans, customers usually redeem in a widget or the cart before checkout, or apply rewards issued as store credit when signed in.
Can I use loyalty points in my retail store?
Many loyalty apps support Shopify POS, but often only on certain plans. Check the plan's feature list on the App Store listing. Native Shopify store credit also works on POS.
Are free loyalty plans worth it?
They're a good way to test the idea. Free plans are capped by monthly orders (between under 100 and 400 orders on the listings we checked) and usually lack tiers, a dedicated loyalty page or integrations.
How do referral apps prevent abuse?
Common controls include blocking self-referrals, limiting rewards per customer, and releasing the referrer's reward only after the friend's order is fulfilled. Ask the developer exactly which checks run on your plan.
