Shopify Upsell and Cross-Sell Apps: Native Options, Checkout Rules and What to Evaluate

By: Irina Shvaya | October 1, 2026
This guide is part of our Shopify resource hub: plans and fees, setup, every major feature, apps, marketing, operations, comparisons and migrations.

Upselling (offering a better or bigger version of what a customer is buying) and cross-selling (offering something that goes with it) are the most direct ways to raise average order value on Shopify. You can do a lot without paying for an app: Shopify's free Search & Discovery app powers related and complementary product recommendations, and the free Shopify Bundles app creates fixed bundles and multipacks.

Where apps come in is placement and intelligence: offers in the cart drawer, at checkout, on a post-purchase page before the thank-you page, plus A/B testing and AI-driven recommendations. Placement is also where Shopify's plan rules matter. Offers inside the checkout's information, shipping and payment steps are Plus-only, while thank-you page and post-purchase offers are available more broadly.

This guide explains the native options, where offers can appear on each plan as of October 2026, what to evaluate in an app, and a neutral table of well-known apps with pricing from their App Store listings on 1 October 2026. It's part of our Shopify hub. Apps are listed alphabetically, not ranked.

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify Search & Discovery (free) shows related and complementary product recommendations, automatically or with up to 10 hand-picked products of each type per product.
  • Shopify Bundles (free, all plans) creates fixed bundles and multipacks, with real-time inventory, up to 30 components per fixed bundle.
  • Pre-purchase offers inside checkout's information, shipping and payment steps require Shopify Plus; thank-you page blocks and post-purchase offers are available on other plans.
  • Post-purchase extensions are still in beta for developers, and some payment providers that need the card's CVV retained aren't supported.
  • Upsell app pricing is often tied to orders or to the upsell revenue the app generates, so model the cost at your real volume.

Native options first

Product recommendations with Search & Discovery

Shopify's product recommendations come in two types: related products (similar to the product being viewed) and complementary products (often bought in addition to it). Shopify generates recommendations automatically from purchase history, product descriptions and related collections. With the free Shopify Search & Discovery app you can override them, choosing up to 10 complementary and up to 10 related products per item.

Your theme needs a product recommendations section and a complementary products section to display them. Check your theme's product template for both before you start. This is the cheapest, fastest cross-sell you can set up: hand-pick complementary items for your top 20 products, and let the automatic recommendations handle the rest.

Bundles with Shopify Bundles

The free Shopify Bundles app is available on all plans. It creates fixed bundles (a set of products sold together) and multipacks (several units of one product), lets customers pick variants such as size or color for products in the bundle, and updates inventory in real time so you don't oversell. Limits from Shopify's documentation:

  • Up to 30 components in a fixed bundle.
  • Up to 3 options and 100 variants in total per bundle.
  • Bundles must be sold through the Online Store or headless storefronts; other sales channels aren't supported.
  • Discount codes and automatic discounts work, allocated across components by weighted price.
  • If a component's price changes, the bundle price doesn't update automatically, so you adjust it manually.

Also note that bundles aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app.

Both native apps have modest App Store ratings (2.7 for Search & Discovery and 2.8 for Shopify Bundles when we checked on 1 October 2026). They are basic, but still worth trying first: they're free, use Shopify's own data and add little to page weight.

Discounts and Shopify Functions

Volume pricing, tiered discounts and "buy X get Y" offers can be built with Shopify's native discounts or with apps that use Shopify Functions. Public App Store apps that contain Functions work on any plan; only custom apps with Functions require Plus. Since Shopify Scripts stopped running on 30 June 2026, Functions are the way to customize discount logic. Our article on Shopify apps vs Shopify Functions explains the difference.

Post-purchase page (after payment, before thank-you)Post-purchase checkout extensions (beta; apps need access approval for live stores)No Plus requirement stated; needs an app approved for post-purchase extensions
Thank you and Order status pagesBlocks added in the checkout and accounts editorAll plans

A few details matter here. Shopify's product offers documentation confirms checkout UI extensions for the information, shipping and payment steps are available only on Plus. It also says post-purchase checkout extensions are in beta: developers can use them freely on development stores, but need to request access to use them on a live store. Ask any post-purchase app you consider to confirm it's approved for live stores.

The post-purchase page also has limitations. Shopify says third-party payment providers that require the customer's CVV to be retained aren't supported (it names Braintree, Payflow Pro, PayPal Payments Pro and Eway as possible examples), and during extreme load such as flash sales, post-purchase pages may not be shown. If you run a big sale, don't count on post-purchase revenue for every order.

Since 26 August 2026, all stores' Thank you and Order status pages have been on the new extensible version, so old "additional scripts" offers are gone. Our Shopify checkout extensibility guide covers the current setup.

What to evaluate in an upsell or cross-sell app

Placements you'll actually use

Map the placements you want (product page, cart drawer, checkout, post-purchase, thank-you page) against your plan. A listing that advertises "in-checkout upsells" may note that they require Shopify Plus; Zipify OCU's listing, for example, says exactly that.

Recommendation logic

Can you set manual rules (if product A, offer B), use automatic or AI recommendations, or combine both? Can you exclude out-of-stock items, products already in the cart and low-margin items? For smaller catalogs, simple manual rules are often enough.

Testing and analytics

You want A/B testing of offers and clear reporting on take rate and incremental revenue, not just "revenue influenced." Check how the app attributes orders and compare against Shopify's own reports.

Pricing, performance and customer experience

Pricing model

Upsell apps commonly charge by monthly order volume or by the upsell revenue they generate. Revenue-based pricing aligns cost with results but rises as you grow; order-based pricing is predictable but charges even if offers convert poorly. Model both at your expected volume.

Performance and discount stacking

Cart drawers and pop-ups add script weight to every page. Test speed before and after, and prefer apps built on app blocks. Also check how the app's discounts combine with your existing discount codes, so a bundle discount plus a sitewide code doesn't wipe out your margin. For Built for Shopify bundle apps, Shopify requires static bundles created through the GraphQL Admin API or customized bundles through a cartTransform function, so discounts and inventory stay native.

Customer experience

The best offers are relevant, cheaper than the main item and easy to decline. Too many offers, especially pop-ups before checkout, can lower conversion. Our list of underrated CRO ideas includes several low-friction alternatives.

A simple rollout plan

  1. Start native. Turn on product recommendations, hand-pick complementary products for your best sellers, and create two or three bundles with Shopify Bundles.
  2. Measure a baseline. Record average order value and conversion rate for four weeks.
  3. Add one app placement at a time. A post-purchase offer is low-risk because the order is already placed; a cart drawer offer affects every shopper.
  4. A/B test the offer, not just the design. Price point and product choice usually matter more than button color.
  5. Check speed and margin monthly. Remove placements that don't pay for their page weight or discount cost.

Upsells are one lever among many in checkout. Our checkout optimization guide covers the rest.

Conclusion

Shopify gives you solid free tools for cross-selling: Search & Discovery recommendations and Shopify Bundles. Apps add placements (cart drawer, post-purchase, thank-you page and, on Plus, inside checkout), testing and smarter recommendations. Match the app to the placements your plan allows, model its order- or revenue-based pricing, watch page speed, and test offers one at a time. Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify have a free upsell feature?

Yes, for cross-selling. The free Shopify Search & Discovery app shows related and complementary product recommendations, and the free Shopify Bundles app creates fixed bundles and multipacks. Your theme needs recommendation sections to display them.

Can I add upsells to Shopify checkout without Plus?

Not in the information, shipping and payment steps: checkout UI extensions there are Plus-only. On other plans you can use post-purchase offers (through apps with access to post-purchase extensions) and blocks on the Thank you and Order status pages.

What's the difference between a post-purchase upsell and a thank-you page offer?

A post-purchase upsell appears after payment but before the thank-you page, and can add items to the order the customer just placed. A thank-you page offer appears on the order confirmation page itself, using blocks added in the checkout and accounts editor.

How many products can a Shopify bundle have?

With Shopify Bundles, a fixed bundle can have up to 30 components, with up to 3 options and 100 variants in total per bundle.

How are upsell apps priced?

Most charge by monthly orders or by the upsell revenue they generate, often with a free tier for development stores or low volume. Some, like Zipify OCU, cap the monthly fee. Check the listing and model the cost at your expected volume.
