Shopify Email and SMS Apps: Going Beyond Shopify Messaging

By: Irina Shvaya | October 1, 2026
This guide is part of our Shopify resource hub: plans and fees, setup, every major feature, apps, marketing, operations, comparisons and migrations.

Every Shopify store already has an email and SMS tool: Shopify Messaging, the app formerly called Shopify Email. Since December 2025 it covers email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns, includes 10,000 free emails a month, and keeps your data inside Shopify. For many small stores that's enough.

Stores usually move to a third-party platform when they need more: deeper segmentation, more sophisticated automated flows, predictive analytics, advanced A/B testing, or a dedicated SMS program with its own compliance tooling. The market is crowded, and pricing models vary widely, from contact-based tiers to monthly minimums plus per-message fees.

This guide explains what Shopify Messaging covers, what to evaluate in an alternative (flows, segmentation, deliverability, SMS compliance), and a neutral table of well-known apps with pricing taken from their App Store listings on 1 October 2026. It's part of our Shopify hub. Apps are listed alphabetically, not ranked, and nothing here is legal advice.

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email) sends email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns, with 10,000 free emails each month and then $1 per 1,000 emails.
  • Third-party platforms earn their cost through flows, segmentation, predictive analytics and testing; buy for the features you will actually run.
  • Deliverability depends on authenticating your domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC); Gmail requires all three plus one-click unsubscribe for senders of more than 5,000 messages a day.
  • US marketing texts sent with automated systems need prior express written consent under the TCPA, and opt-outs such as "STOP" must be honored within 10 business days.
  • Built for Shopify email and SMS apps must use web pixels instead of script tags, sync customer data and support Shopify segments.

What Shopify Messaging already does

According to Shopify's Shopify Messaging documentation, the app lets you create and send email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing campaigns, and it's available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. SMS marketing arrived on 10 December 2025, when Shopify Email was renamed, and is available in select regions. The Spring '26 Edition added WhatsApp campaigns and SMS automations.

Email pricing, per Shopify's help center:

Monthly email volumePrice
First 10,000 emails each monthFree
Up to 300,000$1 per 1,000 additional emails
After 300,000$0.65 per 1,000
After 750,000$0.55 per 1,000

Strengths: it uses Shopify's customer data and segments directly, templates pull products and discounts from your store, Sidekick can edit emails for you. It also works with Shopify Flow and Shopify Forms. For a full walkthrough, see our Shopify Messaging guide.

When stores outgrow it, the reasons tend to be the same: they want branching flows with many steps and conditions, predictive fields such as expected next order date, more advanced testing, or an SMS program with dedicated keywords, two-way conversations and compliance tooling.

What to evaluate in an email or SMS platform

Flows (automations)

Flows do most of the work in ecommerce email: welcome series, abandoned cart and checkout, browse abandonment, post-purchase, replenishment and win-back. Compare how flows branch (by behavior, order history, channel), whether email and SMS run in one flow, and how easy it is to test variations. Our article on abandoned cart, post-purchase and win-back flows covers which ones to build first.

Segmentation and data sync

Check which Shopify data syncs (orders, products, tags, discounts, customer events) and how quickly. Shopify's Built for Shopify requirements for email and SMS marketing apps are a useful checklist: a BFS app must use web pixel extensions rather than script tags, sync customer information to and from Shopify, let you target any segment defined in the Shopify admin (and expose that through a customer segment action extension), and use Shopify's visitors API to identify shoppers who share an email or phone number. An app that does all of that keeps Shopify as your source of truth.

Deliverability, attribution and pricing

Deliverability

Your platform can only do so much if your domain isn't set up properly. Google's email sender guidelines require all senders to use SPF or DKIM and keep spam rates reported in Postmaster Tools below 0.3%. Bulk senders (more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts) must use SPF, DKIM and DMARC, align the From domain, and support one-click unsubscribe on marketing messages. Check that the platform supports a branded sending domain, gives clear DNS instructions, handles one-click unsubscribe, and offers tools such as list cleaning and engagement-based sending. If you use more than one sender (Shopify for order notifications, another app for marketing), make sure each one is authenticated on your domain.

Analytics and attribution

Every platform reports "attributed revenue," but definitions differ (attribution windows, opens versus clicks). Compare against your own Shopify sales data and GA4 rather than taking dashboards at face value. Our guide to email marketing metrics explains which numbers matter.

Pricing model

Email platforms usually price by contacts (profiles), sometimes by send volume. SMS is priced by message or credit, often with carrier fees on top, and MMS costs more than SMS. Price your list size and send frequency 12 months out, and check whether unsubscribed or inactive profiles still count toward your bill.

SMS compliance: TCPA basics for US stores

Text marketing carries legal risk that email doesn't. The Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the FCC's rules in 47 CFR 64.1200 set the main federal rules. The basics, as of October 2026:

  • Prior express written consent. Advertising or telemarketing texts sent to mobile numbers using an automatic telephone dialing system require the recipient's prior express written consent. In practice, that means a clear opt-in (checkbox or keyword) with disclosure of what they're signing up for, and records of it.
  • Quiet hours. Telephone solicitations to residential subscribers are prohibited before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., local time at the recipient's location.
  • Opt-outs. Consumers can revoke consent by any reasonable means, including replying "stop," "quit," "end," "revoke," "opt out," "cancel" or "unsubscribe." Revocations must be honored within a reasonable time, not exceeding 10 business days. Compliance with these revocation rules has been required since 11 April 2025.
  • The rules are moving. In September 2026 the FCC circulated a draft order that would, among other things, let senders designate an exclusive means to revoke consent, and seek comment on revisiting the 10-business-day window. Check the current status before you finalize your program.

State laws can add their own requirements. A good SMS platform helps with compliant opt-in forms, keyword handling, quiet-hour sending and consent records, but compliance is still your responsibility. Get legal advice before launching SMS marketing.

Switching platforms without losing performance

  1. Export consent with contacts. Keep opt-in dates, sources and SMS consent records. Never import SMS numbers without documented consent.
  2. Authenticate the new sender on your domain before the first send, and keep a single SPF record and a single DMARC record.
  3. Warm up gradually. Start with your most engaged subscribers and increase volume over a few weeks, rather than blasting the whole list from a new platform on day one.
  4. Rebuild core flows first: welcome, abandoned checkout, post-purchase and win-back.
  5. Turn off duplicates. Make sure the old platform's flows and Shopify's own marketing automations aren't sending the same message.
  6. Remove leftover code from the old app's pop-ups and tracking scripts, and update your privacy policy if the data processors changed.

Conclusion

Start with Shopify Messaging: it's included, covers email, SMS and WhatsApp, and is free for the first 10,000 emails each month. Move to a third-party platform when you'll genuinely use deeper flows, segmentation, predictive analytics or a dedicated SMS program, and price it at next year's list size. Whatever you choose, authenticate your sending domain and treat SMS consent and opt-outs as a legal requirement, not a setting. Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify Email still available?

It's now called Shopify Messaging. Shopify renamed it on 10 December 2025 when it added SMS, and WhatsApp campaigns followed in the Spring '26 Edition. The first 10,000 emails each month are free.

Do I need a separate SMS app for Shopify?

Not necessarily. Shopify Messaging supports SMS marketing in select regions. Dedicated SMS apps add features such as opt-in keywords, two-way conversations and more detailed compliance tooling, usually priced per message plus carrier fees.

What consent do I need to send marketing texts in the US?

Under the FCC's TCPA rules, marketing texts sent to mobile numbers with automated systems require prior express written consent. You must also honor opt-outs such as "STOP" within 10 business days and avoid sending solicitations before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. local time. Get legal advice for your program.

Why do my marketing emails go to spam?

Common causes are an unauthenticated sending domain, missing DMARC, spam complaint rates above Google's 0.3% threshold, and sending to unengaged or purchased lists. Authenticate your domain, add one-click unsubscribe and send to engaged subscribers first.

Which email app integrates best with Shopify?

Look for an app that syncs customer data both ways, uses Shopify segments, and tracks behavior with web pixels rather than script tags. Those are among Shopify's Built for Shopify requirements for email and SMS apps, so they make a good checklist even for apps without the badge.
