Overview

Insurance software sits between rating rules you can't change and systems you can't replace

Rates and forms are filed with each state. Carriers expose quoting through their own portals and interfaces. Agencies run an agency management system, carriers run a policy administration system, and both hold sensitive personal data. So most useful insurance software is not a new core system; it is a faster quote intake, a portal where policyholders get documents and file a first notice of loss, a tool that compares carrier answers, or an integration that stops staff re-keying the same applicant three times.

We build that software: web apps and portals for agents, policyholders and adjusters, intake and comparison tools, dashboards, and integrations with the agency, policy and claims systems you run, plus AI features with the controls regulators now expect.

This page is about software. For agency websites and lead generation, see our insurance marketing page.

What makes this hard

What makes insurance software different

Insurance is regulated state by state, rated by rules that must match what was filed, and built on data people expect to be protected.

  • Rates and forms are filed

Insurers file rates and policy forms with each state, many through the NAIC's SERFF system. Any rating or quoting logic you build has to match what was filed, and change only when the filing does.

  • Data security law is state by state

The NAIC's Insurance Data Security Model Law (#668) has been adopted in versions by many states; the NAIC state page lists them. Systems holding applicant and policyholder data need to support your security program and incident response.

  • AI use is under scrutiny

The NAIC adopted a model bulletin on insurers' use of AI in December 2023, expecting AI-supported decisions to follow existing insurance law and be governed. AI in underwriting or claims needs records of how it was used.

  • Carrier systems set the limits

Agencies quote through carrier portals, comparative raters and data feeds, each with its own access rules. We confirm what each carrier and system allows before designing around it.

  • Claims start at a bad moment

A first notice of loss comes from someone after an accident or a storm, often on a phone. Intake has to be short, work on mobile and capture photos without losing anything.

How we work

How we build insurance software that fits your filings and your systems

We start with the process: how a quote request, a policy change or a claim moves through your team today, and which systems it touches. The first release targets the step where most time or errors pile up.

Rules are kept separate from screens. Rating factors, eligibility rules and form choices live in configuration you can update when a filing changes, with a record of which version applied to each quote. Integrations use the published interfaces of your agency, policy or claims systems.

Data is protected throughout: minimum collection, encryption, role-based access and audit logs that support your security program. For AI, such as summarizing claim notes or pre-filling applications, a person stays responsible for decisions and the system records what the AI contributed.

What's included

Custom software for independent agencies, MGAs, smaller carriers, adjusters and insurtech startups.

  • Mobile-friendly first notice of loss and claims intake with photo upload
  • Rating and eligibility rules kept in versioned, updatable configuration

  • AI features for summaries and pre-filling, with human decisions and usage records
  • Encryption, access control and audit logs that support your data security program

The process

How the work runs

Four stages, so filings, carrier access and data rules are settled before building.

  1. Process and systems review

We map quotes, policy changes and claims today, and list the systems, carriers and states involved.

  2. Scope and design

We agree the first release, separate rules from screens and test designs with agents or staff.

  3. Build and test

We build with tests that check rating and eligibility rules against known cases, then pilot with one team.

  4. Launch and support

We train users, monitor integrations and update rules as filings and carriers change.

FAQ

Questions agencies and carriers ask about custom software

Can you build a rating engine?

We can build rating and eligibility logic that matches your filed rates and rules, with versioning so you can show which rules applied to each quote. Your actuarial and compliance teams confirm the rules themselves.

Can you integrate with our agency management system?

Usually, through the vendor's published APIs or partner program. What is available varies by vendor, so we confirm it during discovery.

Do you replace policy administration systems?

No. We build portals, intake, workflow tools and integrations around your core systems. Replacing a policy administration system is a much larger project best run with specialist vendors.

Can we use AI in claims or underwriting?

Yes, with governance. We keep a person responsible for decisions, record what the AI contributed, and help you document use in line with your state's approach to the NAIC AI bulletin. Your compliance team should review it.

How long does it take?

A focused intake tool or portal can take a few weeks to a few months, depending on integrations. You get a timeline after discovery.

What does custom software cost?

It depends on scope, integrations and how much of the work is new versus connecting what you already have. Our pricing page lists our plans and lets you estimate a custom build. Request a proposal above and we will quote from your actual requirements.

Wondering what this costs? Every service has published pricing — no discovery call required to see it.
