Overview

Most of the people on your website already have a policy

An insurance agency site does two unrelated jobs on one homepage. Existing policyholders arrive wanting an auto ID card, a certificate of insurance for a job site, a payment link, or the claims number for the carrier that actually holds their policy. Prospects arrive wanting a price. When the service traffic has nowhere obvious to go, it lands in the same contact form and the same phone queue as the new business, and your producers spend the morning emailing COIs instead of quoting.

The prospect is harder still. They came from a comparison ad or a near-me search, they want a number without a phone call, and the first thing most agency sites ask them for is a VIN, a date of birth, a driver's licence number, prior carrier and current limits. That is a rating conversation, not an introduction, and it is asked before the visitor knows whether you write their line at all. A website built for an insurance agency separates the service path from the quote path and asks for ZIP, line of business and renewal date first, leaving the rating questions for the point where the visitor has already decided to talk to you.

This page is about marketing an agency or brokerage. If you are a carrier, MGA or program administrator that needs a rating engine, policy or claims administration, or a policyholder portal actually built, that is a software engagement and we cover it separately under insurance software development. If you are a bank, credit union, RIA or a broader financial services firm, start with our banking, financial and legal page instead.

What makes this hard

What makes marketing an insurance agency different

Almost every buying query here carries a place and a line together, from "homeowners insurance near me" to "contractor general liability in Sacramento", which is why local SEO and your Google Business Profile category do more work in this vertical than any single service page. What complicates it is that you cannot legally chase all of that demand.

📋

Your marketing has two reviewers

Appointed carriers control how their name and logo may appear and usually require sign-off on anything co-branded, and state insurance departments regulate advertising separately under long-standing NAIC model language on advertisements. A claim that reads fine to a copywriter can fail either review, so approvals have to be built into the publishing process rather than discovered after launch.

Licensing draws the map, not ambition

You can only solicit where you hold a resident or nonresident licence and an appointment for the carrier in question. Content and location pages aimed at a state you cannot bind in generate enquiries you have to turn away, which is wasted spend at best and a compliance question at worst.

🧮

The quote form is the leak

Full rater intake asks for VIN, DOB, licence numbers, prior carrier and loss history before any value has been exchanged, and personal lines shoppers abandon it. The fix is a short qualifying step that hands off to your comparative rater or agency management system, not a longer form with a nicer button.

The calendar is not yours

Medicare annual enrollment runs October 15 to December 7 with a separate Medicare Advantage open enrollment window at the start of the year, marketplace open enrollment sits over the same weeks, and most commercial books renew on January 1. In coastal states, carriers stop binding property risks once a named storm is in the box, so the ad you are running in September can be selling something nobody can write.

Shared leads arrive pre-shopped

A lead bought from an aggregator is usually sold to several agencies at once, so the prospect is fielding calls before you dial and the conversation starts on price. A quote request that comes through your own site is the only one nobody else received.

⚖️

You cannot say what people want you to say

Describing coverage on a public page edges toward advice, and "you're covered" language on a website has a way of reappearing in an errors and omissions claim. Coverage explainers have to describe what a form generally does, say plainly that the policy language governs, and stay away from testimonials that turn on a claim outcome.

How we work

How we structure an agency site

We split the site by line and by buyer rather than by the word "services". Personal lines pages for auto, home, renters, umbrella, flood and life are shopping pages. Commercial pages are organised by the coverage a business is being asked to produce, which means general liability, workers compensation, commercial auto, a business owner's policy, professional liability and cyber, and then by class of business, because a roofing contractor and a restaurant are searching for different things and being underwritten by different appetites. If you are an MGA or wholesaler, the buyer is a retail producer instead, and the pages that matter are appetite guides, submission requirements and who to contact for a hard-to-place risk.

Then we give the policyholders their own front door. A service hub with ID cards, certificate requests, payment links and a carrier-by-carrier claims phone and portal directory keeps the day-to-day traffic out of the sales path and off your producers' inboxes, and it is the single fastest conversion improvement most agency sites can make, because the quote path stops competing with a customer service queue. The intake that remains asks the few things that let you route the request: ZIP, line, current carrier and renewal date, then a handoff into your rater or agency management system so nothing is retyped.

Local search work follows the licence map. We set the Google Business Profile primary category to what you actually are, whether that is an insurance agency or a more specific auto, home, life or health agency category, keep the service area inside the states you are licensed in, and build office pages only where there is a licensed producer to answer the phone. Captive agents get a narrower version of the same work, because the corporate template site is not yours to rebuild, so what actually moves is the profile, the reviews, and whatever local pages your carrier's brand rules actually permit.

What's included

What we build for agencies and brokers

The pieces that recur across independent agencies, brokerages, wholesalers and captive offices:

Personal lines pages for auto, home, renters, condo, umbrella, flood and life, written for shoppers rather than for underwriters
Commercial pages organised by coverage and by class of business, so a contractor, a restaurant and a trucking operation each land somewhere that names their exposure
A policyholder service hub with ID card access, certificate of insurance requests, payment links and a carrier-by-carrier claims phone and portal directory
Short quote intake that captures ZIP, line, current carrier and renewal date, then hands off to your comparative rater or agency management system instead of an inbox
Google Business Profile categories, service areas and location pages restricted to the states you are licensed and appointed in
Producer bios that carry national producer number, licensed states, lines written and languages spoken
Disclaimer and disclosure handling for Medicare and marketplace content, and carrier logo usage kept inside what your appointments allow
A change log your carrier marketing contact or compliance reviewer can read as a diff rather than re-reading the whole site

The process

How the engagement runs

Five stages, with the compliance review treated as a step rather than a surprise.

1

Licence and appointment map

We start with the states you are licensed in, the carriers you are appointed with and the lines you actually want more of. That map decides what the site may advertise and where, before anyone writes a page.

2

Traffic split audit

We separate service traffic from new business traffic in your analytics and call data. Most agencies find that the pages getting the most visits are the ones existing clients use, and that the quote path is buried under them.

3

Build, rater and AMS handoff

Design and development, the service hub, and intake wired into your comparative rater and agency management system so a submission lands in the workflow your producers already use.

4

Compliance pass before launch

One structured review cycle covering carrier logo and name usage, coverage language, required disclosures on any Medicare or marketplace content, and anything that reads as a promise of coverage.

5

Local SEO and renewal-season content

Profile and citation work across the states on the map, then class-of-business and coverage content published ahead of the dates it matters, which means before January 1 renewals and before enrollment opens, not during.

FAQ

Questions agencies and brokers ask us

Should we put a full comparative rater on the website?
Usually not as the first thing a visitor meets. A full rater needs VIN, driver's licence and loss history before it can return anything, and most personal lines shoppers quit partway through. We put a short qualifying step in front of it and pass what the visitor gave us into the rater or your agency management system, so the abandoned attempt still arrives as a named lead your producer can call.
We buy shared leads. Does organic actually beat that?
It is a different kind of lead rather than a cheaper version of the same one. An aggregator lead is sold to several agencies at once, so the conversation opens on price and speed to dial decides it. A quote request from your own site came to you alone and usually arrives further along, because the person read your commercial lines page and worked out you write their class of business. Most agencies keep both and simply stop letting the purchased volume hide how little the site produces.
We are captive. How much of this applies to us?
The corporate site is not yours to rebuild, so the work moves to what you do control: your Google Business Profile and its categories, review generation from the book you already have, local content within your carrier's brand rules, and the intake and follow-up that happens after someone finds your office. We check what your agreement permits before building anything, because the brand rules in a captive contract are usually stricter than the state advertising rules.
We write Medicare. Does that change the site?
Substantially. Medicare Advantage and Part D marketing is governed by CMS rules that reach into what a website may say, which plans may be named, the disclaimer third-party marketing organisations have to carry, and the review process for marketing materials. We keep that content in its own section with the required disclosures attached, avoid plan-specific claims that need review you have not obtained, and time publication around the October to December enrollment window rather than dropping it in the middle.
We are licensed in several states. Should the site target all of them?
Only the ones where you hold the licence and the carrier appointment to actually bind the business. Ranking in a state you cannot write is a stream of enquiries you have to decline. If expanding is the plan, the nonresident licences and appointments come first and the content follows, not the other way round.
Do you work with other kinds of businesses?
Yes. We build for a range of verticals and keep a separate page for each so the advice stays specific rather than generic. You can see the full list on our industries page.
