MCPA Exam Day: Booking, Rules and What to Expect

This lesson is part of Learn MCP, our free course on the Model Context Protocol, within The MCP Guide.

In this lesson you will walk through the MCPA (Model Context Protocol Associate) exam from purchase to result. You will learn how booking works, what ID and room you need, what happens at check-in, how the exam screen behaves, and how results, retakes and badges work.

Every fact here comes from official Linux Foundation pages we opened on 28 October 2026: the MCPA exam page and the candidate handbook, FAQ and instructions it links to. Some handbook pages cover all Linux Foundation multiple-choice exams and don't name the MCPA. Where that matters, we say so. Rules change, so re-read the official pages before your exam.

This is the last lesson of the Learn MCP course and its exam prep module.

Key Takeaways

  • As of October 2026, the MCPA is an online, proctored, multiple-choice exam lasting 90 minutes, costing $250 for the exam alone, with one retake, 12-month eligibility and a two-year credential.
  • The exam is delivered through PSI's Bridge platform and the PSI Secure Browser; run the PSI system check well before exam day.
  • You need an original, unexpired, government-issued photo ID whose name exactly matches the verified name in your exam checklist.
  • Book at least a day ahead, change or cancel at least 24 hours before, and start within 30 minutes of your slot or you become a no-show.
  • No notes, tools or websites are allowed during multiple-choice exams, and results arrive by email within 24 hours.

Step 1: Confirm the exam basics

Here is what the exam page listed when we checked:

The Linux Foundation's launch press release in September 2026 gave a 120-minute length. The exam page says 90 minutes, and that is the figure to plan around. Our article on the MCPA certification covers the background.

The general multiple-choice instructions say these exams have 60 questions, with an exception noted only for a different exam (CNPA). The multiple-choice FAQ says a score of 75% or above is needed to pass. Neither page names the MCPA, so confirm both figures in your exam checklist. The handbook's language table lists the MCPA in English only.

Step 2: Book your slot

After purchase, you work through an exam preparation checklist in the Linux Foundation's My Portal, then schedule with PSI. The scheduling page says:

  • You have 12 months from registration to schedule and take the exam, plus any retake.
  • You can pick a slot up to 90 days out. The earliest slot is the next day, because exams need 24 hours' lead time.
  • You can cancel or reschedule up to 24 hours before the start. Inside 24 hours, no changes are possible.
  • A no-show forfeits the exam fee and the retake.

The refund policy allows a refund request only if you bought the exam less than three business days ago and have not scheduled or taken it.

Step 3: Prepare your computer

The multiple-choice instructions list the setup requirements:

  • Run the PSI Online Proctoring System Check on the computer you will use.
  • One active monitor only. Dual monitors are not supported.
  • A working webcam you can move to show the room, a microphone and a reliable internet connection.
  • No virtual machines, even if the system check passes.
  • Close every other application and browser window.

The instructions strongly advise against using a work-provided computer, because security software can disrupt the exam software. They also suggest plugging in your laptop and pausing antivirus scans if you can.

Step 4: Prepare your ID and room

ID. The ID must be a valid, unexpired, original, physical government-issued document, not a photocopy or electronic copy. It must show your name, photo and signature (biometric IDs without a signature are accepted). The first and last name must exactly match the verified name in your exam checklist. The handbook says the verified name can't change once you start the exam launch process.

Room. The exam rules require a quiet, private, well-lit, walled room with the door closed. No one else may be in the room. Public places such as coffee shops are not allowed. Your desk must be clear of notes and electronics, and the instructions also ask for no papers hanging on the walls.

Step 5: Check in

The Taking the Exam page describes the sequence:

  1. Click "Take Exam" in My Portal up to 30 minutes before your slot. Depending on proctor availability, you may need to wait until your start time.
  2. Install and open the PSI Secure Browser, which checks for extra monitors and blocked software.
  3. Accept the certification and confidentiality agreement.
  4. Photograph your ID and take a selfie for comparison.
  5. A check-in specialist reviews them and asks you to scan the room and workspace with your webcam. The handbook says the wait for a specialist should not exceed 15 minutes.
  6. A proctor releases the exam.

You must start within 30 minutes of the scheduled time, or you are marked a no-show with no refund or rescheduling.

Step 6: Know the rules during the exam

From the exam rules page:

  • Talk to no one except the proctor, and don't read questions aloud.
  • Stay in view of the webcam; leave only with the proctor's permission.
  • No eating or gum. Clear liquids only, in a label-free clear bottle or glass.
  • No devices in your ears, on your face or on your body unless medically necessary.
  • Don't write on anything outside the exam screen.

The allowed resources page is blunt: candidates are not permitted to access tools, resources or external sites during Linux Foundation multiple-choice exams. So there is no spec to look things up in.

Step 7: Use the exam screen well

The multiple-choice exam interface page explains:

  • Use Previous and Next to move between questions.
  • Flag questions to revisit; flagged items appear on a review screen.
  • After the last question, "Review Exam" opens the review screen, which has the "Finish Exam" button.
  • The timer does not stop if you request a break, and lost time is not added back after a disconnect.

A simple approach: answer what you know, flag what you don't, and keep about ten minutes for the review screen. If you disconnect, the handbook says you can relaunch from the PSI dashboard and redo self check-in.

Step 8: Results, retakes and your badge

The scoring page says a score report is emailed within 24 hours, barring problems, and is also shown in the portal. The Linux Foundation does not report performance on individual questions.

If you don't pass, the retake policy grants one retake per purchase, to be used within 12 months of the original purchase. Rescoring is not available for multiple-choice exams.

If you pass, the handbook says the Linux Foundation issues a digital badge through Credly. Employers can check your status with the certification verification tool using your certificate ID and last name. The FAQ says certifications last two years and are renewed by retaking and passing the exam before they expire.

Try it

Make your own exam-day checklist now:

  1. Run the PSI system check on the exact computer you'll use, on the same network.
  2. Compare your ID name, letter by letter, with the verified name in your checklist.
  3. Choose your room and remove everything from the desk and walls.
  4. Put your exam time, the "Take Exam" opening time (30 minutes earlier) and the last reschedule time (24 hours earlier) in your calendar.
  5. Do one timed run of our practice questions, flagging and reviewing as you would on the day.

Recap

You learned the exam basics from the official page, how booking windows and refunds work, what computer, ID and room you need, how check-in runs, the rules during the exam, how to use the exam screen, and what happens after. Keep the 4-week study plan and the study guide close as you finish preparing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use notes or the MCP spec during the exam?

No. The allowed resources page says candidates may not access tools, resources or external sites during Linux Foundation multiple-choice exams, and the rules require a clear desk.

Can I take breaks?

The interface page says requesting a break through the pause function does not stop the timer. Leaving the desk needs the proctor's permission. Plan to sit for the full 90 minutes.

What happens if my internet drops?

You can relaunch from the PSI dashboard and repeat self check-in to resume. The timer keeps running, and lost time is not added back, so use a stable, preferably wired, connection.

How do employers check that I passed?

They can use the Linux Foundation's certification verification tool with your certificate ID and last name. It shows your name, the certification, its status and the date achieved. Hiring managers can also read our guide on hiring an MCP developer.

Can I share questions after the exam?

No. The certification and confidentiality agreement prohibits disclosing exam content, including in study guides or discussion groups. Our practice questions are original for that reason.
