Best MCP Courses and Certifications in 2026

This list is part of our best-of MCP lists, within The MCP Guide. Entries are checked against each vendor's own pages; inclusion is editorial and not paid.

The best MCP courses and certifications in 2026 start with the official Model Context Protocol Associate (MCPA) exam from the Linux Foundation. For learning, Anthropic, Hugging Face and Microsoft all offer free courses, and the Linux Foundation now runs paid live classes with RX-M.

Which one you need depends on your goal. A manager who wants to understand MCP needs something short and plain. A developer building servers needs code labs. Someone who wants proof of skill needs the MCPA.

We opened every course page on this list on 28 October 2026 and took prices from those pages. If you want a free, plain-English starting point first, try our free course. It is not ranked here, because we made it.

Key Takeaways

  • The MCPA is the only official MCP certification we found: $250, 90 minutes, online and proctored, valid for two years.
  • Anthropic's two MCP courses on its own Academy site are free, while the Anthropic course on Coursera is included with Coursera Plus.
  • Hugging Face's MCP course offers two free certificates, one for fundamentals and one for building a full use case.
  • Microsoft's MCP for Beginners is a free, MIT-licensed curriculum in six programming languages that names spec 2026-07-28 as current.
  • The Linux Foundation's live MCP classes with RX-M cost $1,995 for two days and $995 for one day.

How we chose

We included a course or certification only if it met these tests:

  1. Real and open. We could open its official page on 28 October 2026.
  2. About MCP itself. MCP is the main subject, not a single lesson inside a general AI course.
  3. Clear cost. The official page states a price, says it is free, or names the subscription that includes it.
  4. Trustworthy publisher. It comes from the protocol's stewards, a major AI company, a university, or a well-known learning platform.

We did not include paid courses from small sellers we could not check, and we did not rank our own course. The order below starts with certification, then live training, then free and subscription courses.

Pros

  • Certificate you can share on LinkedIn.
  • Short and beginner-friendly.
  • Published by Anthropic.

Cons

  • Requires a paid subscription for the certificate.
  • May overlap with the free Academy course of the same name.

Checked against: Coursera course page on 28 October 2026.

6. Hugging Face MCP Course: free course with certificates

What it is. The Hugging Face MCP Course is built with Anthropic. It moves from fundamentals and architecture to an end-to-end use case and a deployed app using Hugging Face tools.

You can audit it or earn one of two certificates. The fundamentals certificate needs Unit 1. The completion certificate needs the build units.

Best for: Builders who want a free certificate and a finished project to show.

Pricing: Free. The page says "The certification process is completely free."

Pros

  • Two free certificates.

10. Official MCP documentation: the free reference

What it is. The official MCP docs are not a course, but they include step-by-step guides to build servers, build clients and build MCP Apps. They also cover architecture and security best practices.

The MCPA is aligned to the 2026-07-28 specification, so the spec itself is required reading for the exam. Our guide on how to read the MCP specification makes it easier.

Best for: Anyone studying for the MCPA, and developers who want the source of truth.

Pricing: Free.

Pros

  • Always matches the current spec.
  • Free and maintained by the protocol project.
  • Covers servers, clients and extensions.

Checked against: MCP documentation on 28 October 2026.

Which path fits you

If you lead a team and just need the concepts, start with a short free course and the official docs. If you build servers, take Anthropic Academy or Microsoft's curriculum, then a hands-on project. If you need proof for a client or employer, study the spec and sit the MCPA.

Our MCPA study plan maps these resources to the exam domains.

Next step

Rolling MCP out to staff takes more than one course. See our staff training playbook for a plan, or browse more lists in the MCP Guide's best-of section.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official MCP certification?

Yes. The Model Context Protocol Associate (MCPA) from the Agentic AI Foundation and Linux Foundation Education launched on 14 September 2026. The exam page lists $250, 90 minutes, multiple choice, and two years of validity.

What is the best free MCP course?

It depends on your language and goal. Anthropic Academy suits Python developers, Microsoft's curriculum covers six languages, and Hugging Face offers free certificates. All three are free as of October 2026.

Do I need to code to learn MCP?

Not to understand it. The official docs' architecture pages explain the ideas in plain terms. Most courses on this list do assume some programming, especially the live Linux Foundation classes.

Do any courses prepare you for the MCPA?

We did not find a course labeled as official MCPA prep. The Linux Foundation's RXM404 covers similar ground, and the exam page recommends knowledge of JSON-RPC, LLM APIs, OAuth 2.1 and reading server manifests.

Are Coursera MCP certificates worth paying for?

They show completion, not a proctored skill test. If you only want to learn, a free course may be enough. If you want a verifiable credential, the MCPA is stronger.
