This article is part of our MCP Guide: what the Model Context Protocol is, how to use it safely, and how to choose servers, tools and help. Want a second opinion on your setup? Request a free MCP readiness review.
The best MCP servers for developers are the official ones from the tools your team already uses: GitHub or GitLab for code, Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare for hosting, and Sentry for errors. Add Playwright or Chrome DevTools for browser testing, and Figma, Linear or Atlassian for design and tickets.
An MCP server lets an AI app such as Claude Code, Cursor or ChatGPT use a tool directly. Instead of copying an error log into a chat, the AI can read it from Sentry itself. That saves time, but it also gives the AI real access, so official servers with clear permissions matter.
Every server on this list is published by the company that owns the product. We checked each one against the vendor's docs or repo on 28 October 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Use the vendor's own MCP server whenever one exists, because unofficial copies in directories can request more access than they need.
- Most servers here are remote servers with OAuth sign-in, so you do not paste long-lived keys into config files.
- GitHub, Linear and Supabase offer read-only modes, and GitLab and GitHub let you limit which groups of tools load.
- Pricing is usually tied to your existing plan, with Atlassian billing MCP calls against Rovo credits and Figma planning usage-based pricing for canvas writes.
- Browser tools like Playwright MCP and Chrome DevTools MCP are free and open source, but both expose browser content to the AI.
How we chose
We included a server only if it passed these tests:
- Official. Published by the product's own company, on its own docs site or GitHub organization.
- Live and documented. We could open its setup docs on 28 October 2026.
- Clear access model. The docs explain how it signs in (OAuth, tokens) and, where relevant, how to limit scope.
- Clear cost. The docs state pricing or plan rules, or the server is open source.
We focused on tools a web or software team touches every week: code hosting, deploys, errors, databases, browsers, design and tickets. We did not install these servers for this review. Claims come from vendor docs, linked inline.

1. GitHub MCP Server: repos, issues and pull requests
What it is. The GitHub MCP Server is GitHub's official server. The remote version runs at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ and signs in with OAuth or a personal access token. A local version runs in Docker or from source.
You choose which toolsets to load, such as repos, issues and pull requests. The README says "read-only mode takes priority," so write tools are skipped when --read-only is set.
Best for: Any team whose code lives on GitHub.
Pricing: GitHub's docs say it is "available to all GitHub users regardless of plan type." Tools tied to paid features, such as Copilot cloud agent, need that same paid license.
Pros
- Read-only mode overrides everything else.
- Toolsets keep the tool list short and focused.
- Remote and local options, MIT licensed.
Cons
- In Copilot Business and Enterprise orgs, the "MCP servers in Copilot" policy must be on to use it in Copilot.
- GitHub Enterprise Server users must bring their own OAuth or GitHub App.
Checked against: GitHub MCP Server repo on 28 October 2026.
2. GitLab MCP server: GitLab projects and CI pipelines
What it is. GitLab's docs say the MCP server became generally available in GitLab 19.5. It runs on GitLab.com, Self-Managed and Dedicated. Default toolsets cover core, merge requests, work items, repository and CI. Wikis and code security are opt-in.
Sign-in uses OAuth with an mcp scope or a fine-grained personal access token. GitLab says "listing a tool does not grant access," because every call still checks your permissions.
Best for: Teams on GitLab who want the AI to read merge requests and CI results.
Pricing: Available on Free, Premium and Ultimate tiers. GitLab Duo Agent Platform tools need Premium or Ultimate with Duo turned on, or GitLab credits.
Pros
- Generally available, not beta.
- Works on self-managed and dedicated instances.
- Every call is checked against your GitLab permissions.
Cons
- An admin must turn on MCP access for the group or instance first.
- Legacy personal, project and group access tokens are rejected.
Checked against: GitLab MCP server docs on 28 October 2026.
3. Sentry MCP: production errors without the copy and paste
What it is. Sentry's MCP server runs at https://mcp.sentry.dev/mcp and signs in with OAuth. Sentry lists "searching errors, analyzing performance, triaging issues" as its core jobs. You can scope the URL to one organization or project, and Sentry says "scoping to a project is recommended when possible."
The source repo adds a local stdio option for self-hosted Sentry. Its AI-powered search tools need an LLM provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic. Other tools work without one.
Best for: Developers fixing bugs reported in production.
Pricing: No separate MCP price is listed on Sentry's MCP page. You need a Sentry account.
Pros
- Project scoping limits what the AI can see.
- Works with self-hosted Sentry through the local version.
- OAuth sign-in on first connection.
Cons
- AI search tools need a separate LLM provider key.
- The local stdio version is described as "still a work in progress."
Checked against: Sentry MCP on 28 October 2026.
4. Vercel MCP: deploys, logs and analytics
What it is. Vercel MCP is "Vercel's official MCP server," a remote server with OAuth at https://mcp.vercel.com. It can search Vercel docs, manage projects and deployments, analyze deployment logs, and query visitors and page views.
Vercel says it "only supports AI clients that have been reviewed and approved by Vercel." The approved list includes Claude Code, Claude, ChatGPT, Codex CLI, Cursor, VS Code with Copilot and Windsurf (now Devin Desktop).
Best for: Website teams hosting Next.js or other front ends on Vercel.
Pricing: Vercel says MCP "is available on all plans."
Pros
- Client allowlist reduces the risk of rogue apps connecting.
- Requires explicit consent per client to block confused deputy attacks.
- Covers docs, deploys, logs and analytics in one server.
Cons
- The AI gets the same access as your Vercel user account.
- Clients not on Vercel's list cannot connect.
Checked against: Vercel MCP docs on 28 October 2026.
5. Netlify MCP Server: build and deploy Netlify sites
What it is. The Netlify MCP Server lets agents "use the Netlify API and CLI." It can create and deploy projects, change access controls, manage form submissions, and manage environment variables and secrets. Netlify's docs recommend the remote server at https://netlify-mcp.netlify.app/mcp. A local @netlify/mcp package exists for teams that must run servers locally.
Best for: Agencies and website teams deploying marketing sites on Netlify.
Pricing: No separate MCP price is listed in Netlify's MCP docs.
Pros
- Covers deploys, forms and environment variables.
- Remote server stays up to date automatically.
- Local option for locked-down environments.
Cons
- Troubleshooting may require a personal access token in your config.
- Netlify recommends Node.js 22 or higher for the local version.
Checked against: Netlify MCP docs on 28 October 2026.
6. Cloudflare MCP servers: the full Cloudflare API in one server
What it is. Cloudflare's docs recommend one main server at https://mcp.cloudflare.com/mcp. It covers the whole API, including DNS, Workers, R2 and Zero Trust, plus docs. It signs in with OAuth, or an API token for automation.
Cloudflare says its "Code Mode" approach uses about 1,000 tokens no matter how many API endpoints exist. Separate servers cover docs, containers, browser rendering and more.
Best for: Teams running DNS, Workers or security settings on Cloudflare.
Pricing: No MCP-specific price is given on Cloudflare's MCP docs page.
Pros
- One server covers the entire Cloudflare API.
- Cloudflare says Code Mode uses about 1,000 tokens.
- OAuth for people, API tokens for CI.
Cons
- Broad API access means you should limit the token's permissions.
- The MCP page gives no pricing, so check costs for the products the AI will touch.
Checked against: Cloudflare MCP servers docs on 28 October 2026.
7. Supabase MCP: database and edge functions with guardrails
What it is. Supabase's MCP server runs at https://mcp.supabase.com/mcp with OAuth sign-in. Tools cover tables, migrations, SQL, logs, security advisors, edge functions and docs.
Supabase gives three ways to limit risk. Add ?read_only=true to run queries as a read-only Postgres user. Add ?project_ref=<id> to lock it to one project. Use ?features= to load only some tool groups. Supabase warns that prompt injection is the main risk and advises connecting to production only when a task needs it.
Best for: App teams building on Supabase who want the AI to read schemas and write migrations.
Pricing: No separate MCP price is listed. Branching tools are marked as paid-plan features.
Pros
- Read-only mode, project scoping and feature filters.
- Clear, specific security guidance in the docs.
- Local endpoint for the Supabase CLI stack.
Cons
- Runs with your developer permissions, so it is not for end users.
- Supabase itself warns against casual production use.
Checked against: Supabase MCP docs on 28 October 2026.
8. Playwright MCP: browser automation from Microsoft
What it is. Playwright MCP is Microsoft's browser automation server. It "uses Playwright's accessibility tree, not pixel-based input," so it does not need a vision model. You add it with npx @playwright/mcp@latest.
Microsoft is candid about limits. The README says coding agents may do better with the Playwright CLI and skills, because "CLI invocations are more token-efficient." It also says "Playwright MCP is not a security boundary."
Best for: QA and front-end developers who want the AI to click through a site and check flows.
Pricing: Free and open source (Apache-2.0).
Pros
- Text-based page structure is fast and precise.
- Works in VS Code, Cursor, Claude Code and more.
- Good for long-running, exploratory testing.
Cons
- Heavier on tokens than the Playwright CLI.
- Not a security boundary, so do not point it at sensitive sessions.
Checked against: Playwright MCP on GitHub on 28 October 2026.
9. Chrome DevTools MCP: performance and debugging in Chrome
What it is. Chrome DevTools MCP lets an agent "control and inspect a live Chrome browser." It records performance traces, reads network requests and console messages, and takes screenshots. It comes from the Chrome DevTools GitHub organization, and Google handles its usage data.
Two defaults to know. Usage statistics are on by default; turn them off with --no-usage-statistics. Performance tools may send trace URLs to Google's CrUX API; turn that off with --no-performance-crux.
Best for: Website teams chasing Core Web Vitals and front-end bugs.
Pricing: Free and open source (Apache-2.0).
Pros
- Real performance traces, not guesses.
- Source-mapped stack traces for console errors.
- Clear opt-out flags for data sharing.
Cons
- Exposes browser content to the AI app, so avoid logged-in sensitive sessions.
- Only Chrome and Chrome for Testing are officially supported.
Checked against: Chrome DevTools MCP on GitHub on 28 October 2026.
10. Figma MCP server: design context for code
What it is. Figma's guide says the server gives AI agents design context to generate code from Figma files. It can extract variables and components and, with Code Connect, reuse your real components. Figma recommends the remote server at https://mcp.figma.com/mcp. It can also write native content back to the canvas.
Best for: Design and front-end teams turning Figma frames into components.
Pricing: Available on Starter, Professional, Education, Organization, Government and Enterprise plans. The desktop server needs a Dev or Full seat on a paid plan. Writing to the canvas is free during beta, and Figma says it "will eventually become a usage-based paid feature."
Pros
- Code Connect keeps generated code consistent with your design system.
- Remote server needs no desktop app.
- Reads FigJam and Make resources too.
Cons
- Canvas writing will move to usage-based pricing.
- Some features need specific seats or plans.
Checked against: Figma MCP server guide on 28 October 2026.
11. Linear MCP: issues and projects
What it is. Linear's MCP server can find, create and update issues, projects and comments. The default endpoint is read-write at https://mcp.linear.app/mcp. A separate read-only endpoint at https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly exposes only read tools. Sign-in uses OAuth 2.1, or an API key.
Best for: Product and engineering teams that plan work in Linear.
Pricing: Linear's MCP docs do not state a plan requirement.
Pros
- Dedicated read-only endpoint.
- Read-only OAuth scope blocks write APIs at the token level.
- Useful for standups, bug triage and turning plans into issues.
Cons
- Read-write is the default, so you must choose read-only on purpose.
- The older SSE endpoint is deprecated, so old setup guides may break.
Checked against: Linear MCP docs on 28 October 2026.
12. Atlassian Rovo MCP Server: Jira, Confluence and Bitbucket
What it is. Atlassian's docs describe a remote server at https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp. It covers Jira, Jira Service Management, Confluence, Bitbucket, Loom and more. OAuth 2.1 is the main sign-in, and Atlassian says it "ensures all actions respect users' existing access controls and permissions." API tokens are optional.
Best for: Teams whose tickets and docs live in Jira and Confluence.
Pricing: MCP calls use Rovo credits from a shared organization pool. Atlassian says usage depends on context volume and reasoning depth.
Pros
- One server for many Atlassian products.
- Respects existing user permissions.
- Atlassian advises least privilege and audit-log review.
Cons
- Credit-based billing makes costs harder to predict.
- Version 1 users move to v2 automatically on 1 March 2027.
Checked against: Atlassian Rovo MCP Server docs on 28 October 2026.
How to roll these out safely
Start small. Pick the two or three servers that match your daily work, not all twelve.
- Start read-only. GitHub, Linear and Supabase support it. Move to write access only after the team trusts the setup.
- Scope tightly. Lock Sentry and Supabase to one project. Load only the GitHub or GitLab toolsets you need.
- Keep approvals on. Supabase and Vercel both advise human confirmation for tool calls.
- Use the vendor's address. Copy the server URL from the vendor's docs, not from a directory listing. Our MCP directories guide explains what listings do and do not verify.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best MCP servers for developers?
Start with the official servers for tools you already use. For most web teams that means GitHub or GitLab, your host (Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare), Sentry for errors, and Playwright or Chrome DevTools for testing.
Are official MCP servers safer than community ones?
They are usually easier to trust because the vendor publishes the address and documents permissions. Many offer OAuth, read-only modes or project scoping. Prompt injection is still possible, so keep approvals on.
Which MCP servers support read-only mode?
Among the servers here, GitHub has a --read-only flag. Linear has a read-only endpoint and a read-only OAuth scope. Supabase has ?read_only=true. Others rely on your account permissions.
Do these MCP servers cost extra?
Most do not charge separately. GitHub and Vercel say MCP works on all plans, and Playwright and Chrome DevTools are open source. Atlassian bills MCP calls against Rovo credits, and Figma plans usage-based pricing for canvas writes.
Is there an MCP server for up-to-date library docs?
Yes. Context7 by Upstash supplies version-specific library docs to coding agents. Its docs are community-contributed, and Context7 says it "cannot guarantee the accuracy," so treat results as a starting point.
Do I need a developer to set these up?
Remote servers with OAuth usually need only the server URL and a sign-in in apps like Claude or Cursor. Local servers, CI setups and permission policies usually need a developer. Our Claude Code consulting team can help plan the rollout.
