SEO Content Briefs with MCP: A Step-by-Step Playbook

This playbook is part of our MCP playbooks, within The MCP Guide. Want help setting it up for your team? Request a free MCP readiness review.

An SEO content brief tells a writer which query to target, what already ranks, which subtopics to cover and how the page should link into the site. Content strategists and SEO leads usually build one by hopping between a keyword tool, a SERP check and a spreadsheet. With MCP (Model Context Protocol), an AI app can call an SEO data provider's server directly, so the research and the first draft of the brief happen in one conversation.

This playbook uses hosted servers from Ahrefs and Semrush, and DataForSEO's open-source server. It is part of our MCP playbooks series. Details were checked against each vendor's docs on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test these servers.

Key Takeaways

  • Ahrefs, Semrush and DataForSEO all publish official MCP servers, and each one charges your normal API units or credits for every call.
  • Ahrefs has a content-helper tool group that returns "the core topics the pages ranking for a keyword cover," which maps closely to a brief.
  • Semrush's server covers all SEO API endpoints and read-only Projects API methods, but its docs do not list individual tool names.
  • DataForSEO's server has one api_request tool that can reach its SERP, Labs and Content Analysis APIs, among others.
  • The AI drafts the brief. An editor still owns search intent, angle, expertise and the final outline.

What you need

Pick one SEO data server. You rarely need two for a brief, and each one costs units.

ServerHow it connectsWhat it covers for briefsCost model
Ahrefs MCP serverHosted, https://api.ahrefs.com/mcp/mcpKeywords Explorer, SERP overview, Content Helper, Site ExplorerLite plan or higher; API units
Semrush MCP serverHosted, https://mcp.semrush.com/v2/mcpAll SEO API and Trends API endpointsEligible plans; API units

Any client that supports remote MCP over HTTP works. Ahrefs and Semrush both document claude mcp add commands for Claude Code. Optionally, add Google's Analytics MCP server if you want the brief to note how your existing pages perform.

Ahrefs. The Ahrefs MCP introduction says the server is for "users with a Lite plan or higher." OAuth-created keys default to a 200,000-unit monthly cap. The tool categories page lets you load only the groups you need with a tools URL parameter, for example ?tools=keywords-explorer,serp-overview,content-helper.

Semrush. Semrush's MCP docs say eligible Standard API plans include 50,000 API units. The server uses OAuth by default, with an Apikey header as a fallback.

DataForSEO. The README lists four tools: docs_index, docs_list_sections, docs_search and api_request. The AI reads the docs to find the right endpoint, then calls it. DataForSEO's MCP page names the SERP API, Keywords Data APIs, DataForSEO Labs API and Content Analysis API among the APIs it can reach.

The workflow

  1. Start with a seed topic and a page goal. Tell the AI the topic, the audience, the conversion you want and the URL it will live on. This is human input, not data.
  2. Find the target keyword. With Ahrefs, the AI uses the keywords-explorer group for volume, matching terms and related terms. With Semrush, it calls the SEO API through the server. With DataForSEO, it uses api_request against a Keywords Data or Labs endpoint.
  3. Read the SERP. Ahrefs' serp-overview group returns the results for a keyword. DataForSEO's SERP API does the same through api_request. Ask the AI to classify the intent of the top results.
  4. Extract the topics the winners cover. Ahrefs' content-helper group is built for this. With other servers, ask the AI to summarize the headings and subtopics from the ranking pages it found.
  5. Check your own coverage. Ahrefs' site-explorer-reports group includes organic keywords and top pages. Ask whether your site already ranks for the keyword, so you update a page instead of creating a duplicate.
  6. Draft the brief. Include target keyword, secondary terms, intent, a proposed H2 outline, questions to answer, internal links and sources the writer should cite.
  7. Editor review. An editor checks the angle, removes anything the data does not support and adds first-hand expertise the AI cannot know.

Example prompts

  • "Using Ahrefs keywords-explorer, find the 10 closest matching terms for 'commercial roof inspection' in the US with search volume. Pick one primary keyword and explain why."
  • "Use serp-overview for that keyword. For each top-10 result, label the page type and intent."
  • "Run content-helper for the keyword and turn the core topics into a proposed H2 outline. Mark which topics every top result covers and which only a few cover."
  • "Using DataForSEO, call docs_search to find the right SERP endpoint, then use api_request to get the top 10 organic results for the keyword in the United States."
  • "Check site-explorer-reports for example.com. Do we already rank for this keyword or close variants? If so, which URL?"

Guardrails

  • Watch the meter. Every call uses API units or credits. Ahrefs' default 200,000-unit cap per OAuth key is a useful ceiling; set lower limits for junior users. Our page on resource exhaustion explains runaway tool loops.
  • Load fewer tools. Ahrefs' tools parameter and Semrush's read-only Projects access both reduce what the AI can touch. Ahrefs' management group can change projects and keyword lists, so leave it out of a brief setup.
  • Respect the terms. Ahrefs says using its MCP endpoint "via custom scripts, bridges, or standalone HTTP/JSON-RPC clients is unsupported and not permitted." Use a supported client.
  • Keep the editor in charge. Data shows what ranks, not what your reader needs from you. Expertise, claims and tone stay human.

What to measure

  • Time to produce a brief, before and after.
  • Editor change rate: how much of the AI's outline survives review.
  • API units or credits used per brief, from your vendor's usage page.
  • Duplicate-content catches: briefs where step 5 found an existing page to update.
  • Ranking and traffic for published pages over the following months, compared with briefs made the old way.

Frequently asked questions

Which SEO MCP server is best for content briefs?

It depends on the tool you already pay for. Ahrefs has a dedicated content-helper group for topic coverage. Semrush covers its full SEO API. DataForSEO is pay-as-you-go and reaches many APIs through one api_request tool.

Does the AI write the article too?

It can, but this playbook stops at the brief on purpose. A brief is easy to check against data. A full draft needs expertise, sources and voice that an editor has to supply.

How much does a brief cost in API units?

None of the vendors publish a per-brief figure. Ahrefs and Semrush point to their API unit guides, and DataForSEO links per-API pricing. Track units per brief for a few weeks to learn your own number.

Can I get Google Search Console data into the brief?

Google does not publish an official Search Console MCP server as of October 2026. Ahrefs' server has a gsc tool group for keywords, pages and positions if you connect Search Console in Ahrefs.
