Auth0 MCP: What It Offers, Pricing and Alternatives

This spotlight is part of our MCP company spotlights, within The MCP Guide. Building an MCP company? See SEO and GEO for MCP companies.

Auth0 is the customer identity platform owned by Okta. Its MCP offer, Auth for MCP, signs users in before their AI agents connect to your MCP server, issues scoped tokens, and helps your server call other APIs on the user's behalf. Auth0 also publishes a beta MCP server for managing an Auth0 tenant.

Checked against: Auth0's Auth for MCP docs on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not test Auth0's products.

Key Takeaways

  • Auth0 says Auth for MCP helps you "implement the authorization parts of the MCP spec with OAuth 2.1 and OpenID Connect."
  • Auth0 supports manual, CIMD and DCR client registration, and recommends CIMD for production.
  • Token Vault stores and refreshes third-party tokens, such as Google or Jira, so your MCP server can call those APIs for the user.
  • The open-source Auth0 MCP Server (MIT) is labeled beta and "not recommended for production use."
  • Auth0's docs say it completes SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001/27017/27018 audits each year.

What Auth0 offers for MCP

The Auth for MCP overview lists four jobs:

  • Protect your MCP server. Clients get an access token before connecting. Users sign in through an identity provider such as Okta, Entra ID, Ping or Google Workspace.
  • Discovery and registration. Auth0 validates client metadata, issues credentials and exposes discovery endpoints.
  • Call your own APIs. With On-Behalf-Of token exchange, your MCP server trades the client's token for a short-lived token scoped to an internal API. This avoids token passthrough.
  • Call third-party APIs. Token Vault manages tokens for services like Google, Microsoft, Jira and Notion. Auth0 says, "Token Vault eliminates manual credential handling."

Auth0 also has a quickstart for controlling access to MCP tools with Auth0 FGA (fine-grained authorization), using roles, groups and time limits.

Client registration

Auth0's registration guide covers three methods: manual registration in the Dashboard or CLI, CIMD and DCR. It says: "For production MCP deployments, we recommend using CIMD registration for its security and scalability." That matches the current spec's preference for Client ID Metadata Documents.

The overview links SDKs for JavaScript and Python, a guide to testing with MCP Inspector, and a Cloudflare guide.

Auth0 MCP Server

Separately, the Auth0 MCP Server lets Claude, Cursor or Windsurf (now Devin Desktop) manage your Auth0 tenant. You can create apps, deploy Actions and read logs with plain-English requests. It is MIT licensed. Its README says it is "currently in beta" and "Not recommended for production use or critical workloads."

It supports a read-only setup with npx @auth0/auth0-mcp-server init --read-only. That is a sensible default for a tool with admin access to your identity system.

Who it's for

Auth for MCP fits teams that already use Auth0 or Okta, and companies whose MCP server must call other APIs as the signed-in user. Token Vault is the main difference from simpler auth layers. It suits servers that touch Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or other OAuth services.

Pricing

Auth0's pricing page shows, in its default B2C view, as of October 2026:

  • Free: $0 per month, up to 25,000 monthly active users, with "Secure Agentic AI workflows" listed.
  • Essentials: from $35 per month.
  • Professional: from $240 per month.
  • Enterprise: contact sales.

The pricing page no longer names Auth for MCP; that name now appears only in Auth0's docs. Instead it sells an "Auth0 for AI Agents" add-on on Essentials and Professional plans, which "adds 50% to the base price (rounded up to the dollar)" and includes unlimited Token Vault. Without the add-on, the comparison table lists 2 Token Vault connections on Free, 3 on Essentials and Professional, and 4 on Enterprise. Prices change with the user count you pick, so check the calculator. B2B plans are priced differently.

Security and trust

Auth0's compliance page says it undergoes an annual SOC 2 Type 2 audit covering all five Trust Services Criteria. It says it has an annual ISO 27001/27017/27018 audit, is CSA STAR certified, and offers PCI-compliant deployment models. It also says it can sign a HIPAA Business Associate Agreement, though "HIPAA compliance is not available on Azure deployments."

Auth0 adds that it is a certified FAPI OpenID Provider for two profiles, which matters in finance.

Alternatives

  • Descope offers an Agentic Identity Hub with a credential vault called Connections.
  • Stytch offers Connected Apps for MCP clients.
  • WorkOS offers AuthKit as an OAuth server for MCP.
