Producing design assets means turning one approved idea into many versions: social posts, ad sizes, slides and web images. Marketers and in-house designers spend hours on resizes, copy swaps and exports. With MCP (Model Context Protocol), an AI app can work through the Canva and Figma MCP servers, so a request like "make this in three sizes with the new headline" becomes a draft you review instead of a manual task.
This playbook covers both servers. It is part of our MCP playbooks series. Everything below was checked against Canva's and Figma's docs on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test either server.
Key Takeaways
- Canva's MCP server can generate, edit, resize and export designs, and edits run inside a transaction you commit or cancel.
- Canva's brand template, brand kit, autofill and
resize-designtools need Canva Pro or above. - Figma's remote server at
https://mcp.figma.com/mcpcan read design context and, with its write tools, create and edit content in Figma files. - Figma says write to canvas is "free during the beta period and will eventually become a usage-based paid feature."
- Each person signs in with their own account, and the AI can only touch files that person can access. A designer still approves every final asset.
What you need
An MCP client and one or both servers.
| Server | Best for | Sign-in | Plan notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva MCP server | Marketing graphics, social sizes, slides, exports | Per-user OAuth | Many tools on all plans; brand templates, autofill and resize need Pro or above |
| Figma MCP server | Product and web design, design systems, assets for developers | Figma account sign-in | Writing outside drafts needs a Full seat; desktop server needs a Dev or Full seat on a paid plan |
Canva. Canva's tools page lists tools including generate-design, search-designs, search-brand-templates, create-design-from-brand-template, autofill-design, start-editing-transaction, perform-editing-operations, commit-editing-transaction, cancel-editing-transaction, get-design-thumbnail, resize-design, get-export-formats, export-design and comment-on-design. A shared cap of 300 requests per minute per user applies across all of that user's MCP clients. Canva's MCP overview names PDF, PNG, JPG, PPTX and MP4 among export formats.
On access, Canva's permissions page says "Canva requires each user to authenticate individually" and that "editing operations are only available on designs and assets for which you have edit permissions."
Figma. Figma's tools and prompts article lists 41 tools. For assets, the useful ones are get_design_context, get_screenshot, get_variable_defs, download_assets, search_design_system, use_figma, upload_assets and generate_image. download_assets, use_figma, upload_assets and generate_image are remote-only, and generate_image uses Figma AI credits. Figma's server guide says you need "an MCP client listed in the Figma MCP catalog."
The workflow
- Start from an approved master. Pick a brand template in Canva or a frame in Figma that a designer has signed off. The AI adapts approved work; it does not invent your brand.
- Find the source. In Canva, the AI uses
search-brand-templatesorsearch-designs. Figma describes its remote server as "link-based," so you paste a link to the frame you want it to use. - Pull brand context. In Figma,
get_variable_defslists the variables and styles used, andsearch_design_systemfinds components in your libraries. In Canva,list-brand-kitsshows your brand kits (Pro and above). - Create the variants. In Canva,
create-design-from-brand-templateorautofill-designfills a template with new copy, andresize-designmakes other sizes. In Figma,use_figmacreates and edits content in the file. - Edit inside a transaction. Canva edits start with
start-editing-transaction, apply throughperform-editing-operationsand stay pending untilcommit-editing-transaction. Useget-design-thumbnailto preview before you commit, andcancel-editing-transactionto discard. - Review. A designer checks every variant. In Canva, the AI can leave notes with
comment-on-design. In Figma,get_screenshotcaptures a frame for quick review in chat. - Export and hand off. Canva's
get-export-formatsandexport-designproduce files. In Figma,download_assetsexports renders and source images for developers or ad platforms.
Example prompts
- "Search my Canva brand templates for 'webinar promo'. Create a design from the best match with the headline 'Spring Planning Workshop, 12 May'. Show me a thumbnail before you commit."
- "Resize the approved design to Instagram story and LinkedIn post sizes. List the new design links."
- "Check
get-export-formatsfor this design, then export it as PNG. Tell me if any premium element blocks the export." - "Here is a Figma frame link. Use
get_variable_defsto list the colors and text styles it uses, thendownload_assetsto export its images." - "Using
use_figma, duplicate this banner frame into three versions with the headlines below. Work in my drafts file only."
Guardrails
- Brand control first. Work from approved templates and libraries. Canva's brand template tools and Figma's
search_design_systemkeep the AI inside your system. - Use Canva's transaction as an approval gate. Nothing is committed until
commit-editing-transactionruns. Keep that step for a person. Our lesson on MCP permissions and approvals shows how to set client prompts. - Write in drafts. In Figma, writing outside your drafts needs a Full seat. Have the AI work in a draft file and let a designer move approved work into shared files.
- Watch credits and limits. Figma's
generate_imageuses AI credits, and Weave tools use Weave credits. Canva shares a 300-requests-per-minute cap across a user's clients. - Licensing still applies. Canva says exports of designs with premium elements may fail with
license_required. Check rights for any stock or AI-generated image before it runs in an ad.
See the MCP security hub for broader rules on connecting third-party servers.
What to measure
- Time from approved master to full asset set, before and after.
- Number of variants a designer rejects or fixes, and the reasons.
- Brand issues caught in review, such as wrong fonts or colors.
- AI or Weave credits used per campaign in Figma.
- Turnaround time on resize and copy-swap requests from other teams.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need Canva Pro to use the Canva MCP server?
Not for everything. Canva's tools page lists many tools on all plans, including generate-design and export-design. Brand templates, brand kits, autofill and resize-design need Pro or above, and Free users get "a limited trial" of resizing.
Can the Figma MCP server create designs, or only read them?
Both. Its read tools give design context to AI coding tools, and write tools such as use_figma create and edit content in Figma files. Figma says write to canvas needs the remote server and is free during the beta.
Can the AI see every design in our company account?
No. Canva says each user authenticates individually and operations match that user's access. Figma's remote server article says you need "Edit or view only permissions to that file." The AI sees what the signed-in person can see.
Should I use Canva or Figma for this?
Use the tool your team already designs in. Canva fits template-driven marketing graphics and quick resizes. Figma fits product, web and design-system work, especially when developers need the assets.
