Figma MCP Server: Tools, Setup and Security

This profile is part of our MCP server directory, within The MCP Guide. Profiles are checked against each vendor's own documentation. Need a server built? See MCP development.

The Figma MCP server gives AI coding tools design context, such as components, variables and layout, so they can turn a frame into code. Its newer tools also let agents create and edit content in Figma Design, FigJam and Figma Slides. Figma publishes it as a remote server at https://mcp.figma.com/mcp and as a desktop server that runs through the Figma app.

Checked against: Figma's guide to the MCP server on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test this server.

Key Takeaways

  • Figma recommends the remote server, which does not need the desktop app.
  • Figma publishes 41 tools plus one prompt; many write tools are remote-only.
  • Write to canvas is free during its beta, and Figma says it will become a usage-based paid feature.
  • The desktop server needs a Dev or Full seat on a paid plan; writing outside drafts on the remote server needs a Full seat.
  • Only clients listed in Figma's MCP catalog can connect.

What it can do

Figma's tools and prompts article lists 41 tools in groups:

  • Design to code: get_design_context, get_metadata, get_screenshot, get_variable_defs, get_motion_context, get_figjam and download_assets.
  • Code to design: use_figma, generate_figma_design, create_new_file, upload_assets, generate_diagram, html_to_figma and generate_image. All are remote-only.
  • Design systems and Code Connect: get_libraries, search_design_system, get_code_connect_map and add_code_connect_map.
  • Generative plugins and shaders: list, read, create and update tools.
  • Figma Make: import_codebase.
  • Account: whoami.
  • Figma Weave: weave_run_tool, weave_run_model and related tools, which need a paid standalone Weave account and use Weave credits.

Figma also offers a prompt, create_design_system_rules, that writes a rules file for turning designs into code that fits your project. generate_image uses Figma AI credits.

One workflow difference matters. Figma says prompting with your current selection works only with the desktop server. With the remote server, you paste a link to a frame or layer.

How to connect it

Figma's remote server installation guide recommends its plugin for Claude Code:

claude plugin install figma@claude-plugins-official

Or add the server by hand:

claude mcp add --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp

Add --scope user to make it available in every project. Then use /mcp and choose Authenticate. For Codex:

codex mcp add figma --url https://mcp.figma.com/mcp

For VS Code, Figma's mcp.json example is:

{
  "inputs": [],
  "servers": {
    "figma": {
      "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp",
      "type": "http"
    }
  }
}

VS Code's MCP server docs still support .vscode/mcp.json "for compatibility" but label it deprecated in the guided setup flow, as of October 2026. Servers that prompt for values with ${input:...} aren't forwarded to Copilot harness sessions.

Cursor users can run /add-plugin figma or add the URL to mcp.json. A browser page opens on first use, and you click Allow access.

Security notes

The write-to-canvas tools change what Figma's server can do. It is no longer a read-only design source.

  • Write tools. use_figma creates, edits and inspects content in Figma files. Keep approval on for shared files. See MCP permissions and approvals.
  • File access. You need edit or view permission on the file. Writing to a Figma Specs document needs edit access.
  • Paid runs. Figma says the agent must confirm costs before paid Weave runs. Still, watch AI and Weave credit use.
  • Fonts. Figma notes the server and Figma Agent can access fonts uploaded to your account.
  • Approved clients only. Figma limits connections to clients in its MCP catalog, which narrows the field. Our page on MCP supply chain risks explains why that helps.

More guidance is in the MCP security hub.

Alternatives

Next step

Figma MCP pays off when designers and developers share a design system and want code that matches it. Check seat types before rollout, since the desktop server needs Dev or Full seats. eSEOspace offers Claude Code development for teams wiring up design-to-code workflows. Frequently asked questions

Should I use the remote or desktop Figma MCP server?

Figma recommends the remote server. The desktop server runs through the Figma desktop app and supports prompting with your current selection. Many write tools are remote-only.

Which Figma plans support MCP?

Figma lists Starter, Professional, Education, Organization, Government and Enterprise for the server. The desktop server needs a Dev or Full seat on a paid plan. Figma for Government supports the desktop server only.

Does write to canvas cost extra?

Figma says write to canvas is free during the beta period and will eventually become a usage-based paid feature. generate_image uses Figma AI credits, and Weave tools use Weave credits.

Does the Figma MCP server have rate limits?

Yes. Figma's rate limits page lists them, as of October 2026. View and Collab seats get up to 20 tool calls a month. Full and Dev seats get up to 200 a day on Professional and Organization plans, and up to 600 a day on Enterprise. The limits apply to tools that read Figma data, some tools are exempt, and Figma says it may change them at any time.
