Inventory reorder is the routine of checking what's running low, working out how much to buy and placing orders with suppliers. In a small Shopify store, the owner or an operations lead often does it from memory and a spreadsheet. Shopify's official AI connectors let an assistant read stock levels and sales data from your store, so it can draft the reorder list for you to approve.
A note on MCP (Model Context Protocol, the standard that connects AI apps to business tools): OpenAI says its Apps SDK builds on MCP (its developer docs now file this under Plugins), and Shopify publishes official connectors for Claude, ChatGPT and other AI apps. Shopify's help pages don't publish a server URL for these, so this playbook follows Shopify's documented actions, as of October 2026.
Key Takeaways
- Use Shopify's official AI plugin or connector for store admin data, not the public shopping endpoint.
- The documented inventory actions are
get-inventory-levelsandset-inventory, andrun-analytics-queryanswers sales questions. - Shopify documents no purchase order action for its AI plugin, so placing supplier orders stays with you.
- Connect with read-only access for planning; you can't lower access later without reinstalling.
- Measure stockouts and overstock, not how fast the list got made.
What you need
- A Shopify store and a staff account allowed to view products and inventory. Shopify says an AI tool "can only access data, or make changes to your store, within the data access level" your user has.
- An AI app with Shopify's official connector. Shopify lists connectors or plugins for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Microsoft Copilot, Muse and Perplexity on its AI tools page. Our ChatGPT and Shopify setup guide walks through one of them.
- Supplier facts you keep yourself: lead time per supplier, minimum order quantities and pack sizes. Shopify's AI docs don't describe a place for these.
- For background on Shopify's MCP servers, including the shopper-facing ones, see our Shopify MCP server profile.
Shopify's ChatGPT plugin guide lists these relevant actions:
| Job | Documented action |
|---|---|
| Find products and variants | search_products, get-product |
| Check stock by location | get-inventory-levels |
| Adjust stock at a location | set-inventory |
| Sales and order history | run-analytics-query, list-orders, get-order |
The workflow
- Connect read-only. When you approve the connector in your Shopify admin, choose read-only access. Shopify's authorization guide says read-only "lets it view data," and write access lets it edit data and take actions.
- Pick the products to watch. Use
search_productsto list active products in the categories you restock. Ask for variants, since you reorder by size or color, not by product. - Read stock by location.
get-inventory-levelslets you "Check the stock for every variant of a product across your locations," per Shopify's guide. - Read sales velocity. Use
run-analytics-queryfor units sold per variant over the last 30 or 90 days. Shopify says the plugin answers questions about sales, orders, products and fulfillment, and that it reads this data without changing it. - Do the reorder math in the chat. Give the AI your rule, for example: reorder when stock covers fewer days than supplier lead time plus a safety buffer. It applies your numbers. Shopify's docs don't describe a reorder-point feature, so the rule is yours.
- Draft the reorder list. One row per variant: on hand, units sold, days of cover, suggested quantity, supplier. Round to pack sizes you supplied.
- A person places the order. Shopify's plugin documents no purchase order action. Email the supplier or use your purchasing tool. If you raise purchase orders in QuickBooks Online, Intuit's open-source MCP server documents
create_purchase_order, but keep a person approving it. - Record received stock. When goods arrive, update counts in Shopify.
set-inventorysets a quantity at a location with a reason such as received, correction or damaged. This needs write access, so many teams do it in the admin instead.
Example prompts
- "Which store are you connected to?" (Shopify:
get-shop-info) - "Show stock for every variant of our three best-selling products across all locations." (Shopify:
run-analytics-query,get-inventory-levels) - "How many units of each variant in the Candles collection sold in the last 30 days?" (Shopify:
run-analytics-query) - "Using a 21-day supplier lead time and 7 days of safety stock, list variants with fewer days of cover than 28, and suggest order quantities in packs of 12." (calculation on the data above)
Guardrails
- Plan read-only, write rarely. Shopify says you can't lower an approved access level: "To give a tool less access, uninstall the integration, and then install it again." Start read-only.
- Know the hard limits. Shopify says the plugin can't issue refunds, cancel or capture orders, mark orders paid, or change plan, payment, tax or domain settings, even with write access.
- Use the right endpoint. Shopify's storefront endpoint at
https://{shop}/api/ucp/mcpgives AI agents product search, carts and store-policy answers. It is not a store admin tool, so don't use it for inventory. - Keep buying human. The AI drafts; a person commits money to a supplier.
- Watch for unsafe edits. Product titles and notes are outside text. See excessive permissions in MCP and the MCP security center.
What to measure
- Stockouts per month on reordered variants.
- Days of cover for your top sellers, each week.
- Overstock: variants with far more cover than your target.
- Supplier lead time actuals against the lead times you assumed.
- Manual corrections to the AI's suggested quantities.
Start with a month of your current numbers so you have a baseline.

Frequently asked questions
Can the AI create purchase orders in Shopify?
Shopify's AI plugin guide lists no purchase order action as of October 2026. Use the AI to draft the list, then order from your supplier or purchasing tool yourself.
Can it change inventory counts?
With write access, yes. set-inventory sets quantities at a location with a reason such as received, correction or damaged. Keep it read-only if you only need planning.
Does it work with Claude as well as ChatGPT?
Shopify lists a Shopify connector for Claude alongside the ChatGPT plugin and others. The action names in this playbook come from Shopify's ChatGPT plugin guide.
Is the Shopify plugin an MCP server?
OpenAI says its Apps SDK for ChatGPT builds on MCP; as of October 2026 the old Apps SDK docs address redirects to OpenAI's Plugins docs. Shopify's help pages call these connectors and plugins and don't publish a server URL, so connect through each AI app's directory.
