Connecting ChatGPT to Shopify lets you manage a store from a chat. You can add products, check orders, set inventory, create discount codes and ask about sales. Shopify publishes an official Shopify plugin for ChatGPT, which you install from ChatGPT and approve in your Shopify admin.

Before you start
You need a ChatGPT account and, to manage an existing store, a Shopify store you can sign in to. Shopify says standard Shopify plan pricing applies and there is no extra Shopify fee for the plugin. Any ChatGPT subscription is paid to OpenAI.
OpenAI's plugins article says the plugin directory is available across ChatGPT plans, but installing a given plugin depends on your plan, workspace, role and region. In a managed ChatGPT workspace, an admin may need to enable the app.
Shopify says to use a desktop browser for setup. Your Shopify staff permissions also cap what the plugin can do. A user who can't edit products can't give ChatGPT that power.
Where MCP fits
OpenAI says its Apps SDK builds on the Model Context Protocol. As of October 2026 the old Apps SDK docs address redirects to OpenAI's Plugins docs, which describe plugins that include an MCP server for live data and actions. Shopify does not publish a server URL for this plugin. Shopify's public UCP endpoint at https://{shop}/api/ucp/mcp serves shopping agents, not store admin, so it is not the way to manage your own store.
Steps
Shopify's authorization guide says connecting takes two steps, each with its own confirmation.
- In ChatGPT, open the Shopify plugin install page, or go to Settings > Plugins and select Shopify.
- Select Install plugin if shown, then Connect if prompted.
- ChatGPT connects to Shopify and redirects you to your Shopify admin. On the install page, review and approve the data access level the plugin requests. Read-only access lets it view data; write access lets it edit data and take actions.
- Return to ChatGPT and start a new conversation.
- Type @Shopify in your message. Shopify says that if you don't, ChatGPT sometimes replies with admin instructions instead of making the change.
Some tools prompt you to connect only when you first ask for something that needs your store. You can also ask the plugin to create a new store before you sign up for Shopify, then save it to an account.

Shopify suggests one task at a time and short, specific analytics questions.

Permissions and safety
Shopify's considerations page sets out the limits and your responsibilities.
- Blocked actions. The plugin can't issue refunds, cancel or capture orders, mark orders as paid, process returns, or create and adjust gift cards. Shopify says these stay blocked even with write access.
- Read-only areas. The plugin reads orders and customer records but doesn't change them.
- Confirmations. Shopify says the plugin asks you to confirm before it publishes a theme, and before changes it makes through the Shopify Admin API to pages, menus, metafields, markets and translations.
- Data leaves Shopify. Once you authorize sharing, your data is governed by OpenAI's terms and privacy policy. You are responsible for changes the tool makes.
- ChatGPT approvals. OpenAI's app permissions article lists Always ask and Allow read actions, among others. Pick one of those while you build trust.

If it doesn't work
- ChatGPT gives general advice. Shopify says that if this happens after you name the plugin, the problem is plugin access in ChatGPT, not your store. Contact OpenAI for that.
- It keeps asking for the old store. After switching stores, start a new conversation. An older conversation can keep the earlier connection.
- A batch stops partway. Shopify says the plugin changes items one at a time. Finish large batches in your Shopify admin.
- "Disabled by admin." OpenAI's troubleshooting article says to ask your workspace administrator to review the plugin.
