Social Media Calendar with MCP: A Step-by-Step Playbook

This playbook is part of our MCP playbooks, within The MCP Guide. Want help setting it up for your team? Request a free MCP readiness review.

A social media calendar is the plan for what goes out, on which channel, and when. A marketer or agency account manager usually builds it each week in a scheduling tool, copying ideas from a spreadsheet and writing captions per channel. With MCP (Model Context Protocol), an AI app can read your channels and last week's results, draft posts as drafts, and leave scheduling to a person who reviews them.

This playbook uses two official servers that publish documentation: Buffer and Hootsuite. Buffer names every tool. Hootsuite describes capabilities but not tool names. Both were checked against vendor docs on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not test either server.

Key Takeaways

  • Buffer's server at https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp has tools for channels, posts, ideas and templates, plus a review_weekly_posts prompt.
  • Buffer's create_post can save a draft, add to the queue, share now or schedule a custom time. Use drafts by default.
  • Buffer says the connection covers your whole account, with no per-organization scoping.
  • Hootsuite's Perch server covers drafting, scheduling, the content library and performance review, but Hootsuite publishes no tool names.
  • A person approves every post. Public mistakes are hard to take back.

What you need

  • An MCP client. Buffer documents Claude and Claude Code and lists guides for ChatGPT, Cursor and others. Hootsuite names ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and Gemini.
  • Buffer (recommended for this playbook because its tools are named). The Buffer MCP docs call https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp "the only Buffer MCP endpoint." See our Buffer MCP server profile.
  • Or Hootsuite. Hootsuite's MCP page lists four servers. Perch, at https://mcp.hootsuite.com/perch, is the one for calendars. Lumen, at /lumen, covers listening. See our Hootsuite MCP server profile.
  • A content plan. Themes for the week, links you want to promote, and any dates to avoid.

To connect Buffer in Claude, Buffer's Claude guide says to open Customize, then Connectors, search for Buffer, click Connect and approve access. For Claude Code it gives:

claude mcp add --transport http buffer https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp

Buffer lists post statuses including draft, needs_approval, scheduled, sending, sent and error.

The workflow

  1. Map the channels. The AI calls list_channels so it knows which profiles exist. Ask it to repeat the list back to you, so nothing goes to the wrong brand.
  2. Review the current week. Run the review_weekly_posts prompt. Buffer says it reviews the posts scheduled for the current week and groups them by channel. list_posts with a status filter shows drafts and posts waiting for approval.
  3. Check what worked. get_aggregated_post_metrics returns post metrics. Ask for a short summary by channel and post type, with the numbers Buffer returned.
  4. Collect ideas. Pull existing ideas with list_ideas. Save new ones from your plan with create_idea, so the backlog lives in Buffer and not in a chat.
  5. Draft posts as drafts. Ask the AI to call create_post with the draft option for each slot, using a template from list_post_templates where you have one. Ask for one caption per channel, not one caption copied everywhere.
  6. Review in Buffer. A person opens the drafts, checks facts, links, tags, images and tone, and edits them. edit_post can apply changes you dictate.
  7. Schedule. The reviewer schedules from Buffer, or approves a create_post or edit_post call that sets the time. Buffer's own advice is to leave the approval prompts on.

On Hootsuite, follow the same shape with Perch. Hootsuite says Perch lets you "Draft posts, schedule at the best time, use your content library, and review performance from chat." Because tool names are not published, read the tool list in your client before you rely on a step.

Example prompts

  • "List my Buffer channels and tell me which brand each one belongs to. Don't create anything."
  • "Run review_weekly_posts and show me gaps: days with no post on each channel."
  • "Summarize last month's post metrics by channel. Use only the numbers Buffer returns."
  • "Save these five blog topics as Buffer ideas in the November group."
  • "Draft three LinkedIn posts and three Instagram captions for next week from these ideas. Save them as drafts only, and list the draft IDs."

Guardrails

  • Drafts by default. Buffer says create_post can publish immediately and delete_post cannot be undone. Tell the AI to use the draft status, and keep your client's approval prompts on.
  • Whole-account reach. Buffer says "the connection covers your whole account," with no per-organization scoping. Agencies managing many brands should consider a separate Buffer account per client. Our page on excessive permissions explains the risk.
  • Check the URL. Buffer warns you to check any one-click install from a third-party list. Only mcp.buffer.com/mcp is Buffer's.
  • Untrusted sources. If the AI drafts from web pages or comments, hidden instructions can ride along. Read MCP prompt injection.
  • Rate limits. Buffer says MCP and API keys share one set of limits over 15-minute, 24-hour and 30-day windows, and a limit hit returns a 429 with a Retry-After value.
  • Human in the loop. The MCP tools specification says users should be able to deny tool calls and see confirmation prompts. For public posts, that review is the whole point.
  • Keep brand calls human. Crisis replies, regulated claims and anything about pricing or health should be written or approved by a person.

The MCP security hub covers more controls.

What to measure

  • Hours spent building the weekly calendar, before and after.
  • Share of AI drafts published with light edits, heavy edits or not at all.
  • Gaps in the calendar each week (days or channels with no post).
  • Posts that needed a correction after going live.
  • Engagement trends from get_aggregated_post_metrics or your platform analytics, compared with your own baseline.

Frequently asked questions

Which social media schedulers have official MCP servers?

As of October 2026, Buffer and Hootsuite both document official remote servers. Buffer publishes its tool names. Hootsuite publishes capabilities by server but not tool names.

Can the AI publish posts without me?

Buffer's create_post can share a post immediately, so yes, if you approve that call. This playbook keeps every post as a draft until a person schedules it.

Can I limit the AI to one client's channels in Buffer?

Not within one account, according to Buffer. It says there is no per-organization scoping. Use separate accounts if you need hard separation between clients.

Does Hootsuite work the same way?

Hootsuite says your AI tool can only use the data and actions you authorize, tied to your Hootsuite account. For Gemini and Copilot, its page says setup requires IT administrator access.
