Warp MCP: What It Offers, Pricing and Alternatives

This spotlight is part of our MCP company spotlights, within The MCP Guide. Building an MCP company? See SEO and GEO for MCP companies.

Warp is an agentic development environment built around a terminal, with its own coding agent and cloud agents. Warp's agents act as MCP clients: you connect Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and the agent can call their tools and read their resources.

Checked against: Warp's MCP servers documentation on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not test Warp's products.

Key Takeaways

  • Warp's docs describe MCP servers as plugins that extend its local agents "with custom tools or data sources."
  • You can add servers in the app, paste a JSON mcpServers block, or let Warp detect config files, including Claude Code and Codex files.
  • Warp supports command-based local servers plus URL servers over Streamable HTTP and SSE.
  • Teams can share a server, and Warp scrubs sensitive environment values before sharing.
  • Warp has a Free plan; paid plans start with Build at $20 a month, according to its pricing page.

What Warp offers for MCP

Warp is an MCP host, not a server vendor. Our MCP server explainer covers the server side.

Where to find it. According to the MCP servers page, you open MCP settings from Settings > Agents > MCP servers, from Warp Drive, or from the Command Palette.

Adding servers. Click Add and fill in one of two server types:

  • Command servers take a command and args, with optional env and working_directory. Warp starts them at launch and shuts them down on exit.
  • URL servers take a url and optional headers.

Warp says configs from most MCP clients "can be directly copied and pasted." You can paste a full mcpServers object to add several servers at once.

File-based servers. Warp reads its own ~/.warp/.mcp.json and project .warp/.mcp.json files. It also detects servers defined for Claude Code (~/.claude.json, .mcp.json), Codex and other agents. Global Warp servers start automatically. Servers from other tools start only if you turn that option on. Project-scoped servers never auto-start.

Transports. The docs say Warp supports "Streamable HTTP and SSE, along with custom headers and environment variables." Command servers in the examples run in stdio mode. Our MCP transports guide explains these options.

Sign-in. Servers can use environment variables, OAuth or bearer-token headers. OAuth opens a browser flow, and Warp stores credentials on the device. You must sign in again on a new machine.

Team sharing. A share icon publishes a server to your team. Warp scrubs sensitive env values, and teammates are prompted to fill them in. Warp also provides some ready-made servers under Shared.

Cloud agents. Warp's cloud agent MCP page says you can pass servers with --mcp on the oz agent run command or in an agent config file. Each server uses a Warp-shared reference (warp_id), stdio, or a Streamable HTTP/SSE URL. Cloud runs cannot complete browser logins, so OAuth servers must be authorized once in the web app and referenced by warp_id.

Who it's for

Warp suits developers who want MCP tools inside the terminal where they already run commands and coding agents. Teams get extra value from shared server configs, so new members do not rebuild each setup by hand.

Because Warp reads Claude Code and Codex configs, it can reuse servers you set up elsewhere. Compare options in our MCP clients roundup.

Pricing

These figures come from Warp's pricing page, checked on 28 October 2026. The page does not mention MCP by name.

Warp also prices Warp Factories, its fleet-of-agents product, separately on the same page.

Security and trust

Warp's security page says it "has obtained a SOC 2 Type 2 attestation from an accredited third party," with the report available through its Trust Center. The pricing page says Warp "has Zero Data Retention policies with all contracted LLM providers."

For MCP, Warp says project-scoped servers need manual approval for each session and config edits need explicit approval. Our MCP security best practices cover what to check before you connect any server.

The open-source client lives in Warp's GitHub repository, so you can read the code yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Does Warp support MCP?

Yes. Warp's docs describe MCP support for its local agent and its cloud agents. Connected servers show their tools and resources once they are running.

Can Warp use the MCP servers I set up for Claude Code?

Yes. Warp's docs say it detects Claude Code config files, including ~/.claude.json and project .mcp.json files, as well as Codex configs. Servers from other tools auto-start only if you enable that setting.

Which MCP transports does Warp support?

Warp supports command-based local servers, shown in stdio mode in its examples, and URL servers over Streamable HTTP and SSE. Cloud agents accept stdio, Streamable HTTP/SSE, or a Warp-shared server reference.

Is MCP free in Warp?

Warp's docs don't say which plans include MCP, and its pricing page doesn't mention MCP by name. There is a Free plan, and agent usage is priced on every plan, so check the pricing page for how agent work is billed.
