BalanceMCP MCP Server: Tools, Setup and Security

This profile is part of our MCP server directory, within The MCP Guide. Profiles are checked against each vendor's own documentation. Need a server built? See MCP development.

The BalanceMCP MCP server lets an AI app run a double-entry ledger: import bank statements, categorize transactions, reconcile accounts and produce reports. BalanceMCP (eSEOspace marketing client) publishes and hosts the server itself. Its site says, "Your AI can finally manage your finances."

Checked against: BalanceMCP's tools page on 28 October 2026. eSEOspace did not install or test this server.

eSEOspace works on BalanceMCP's website and search marketing. We did not build its software. Read more in our BalanceMCP client spotlight.

Key Takeaways

  • BalanceMCP is a remote server at https://balancemcp.com/api/mcp, reached over HTTP with a bearer API key.
  • It has 19 tools: 8 that change the books and 11 that only read.
  • The Free plan is $0 "forever" and includes all 19 tools; a $9 Plus plan is marked "Coming soon."
  • Automatic bank feeds are "still being built," so statements are imported by hand as PDF or CSV.
  • Its security page says there are no read-only or scoped keys yet, no SOC 2 and no third-party penetration test.

What it can do

BalanceMCP's tools page lists two groups.

Tools that change your books (8):

  • create_book, manage_accounts, import_statement and categorize_transactions
  • create_rule saves how a recurring charge should be categorized
  • post_journal_entry for manual entries such as depreciation or accruals
  • reverse_entry undoes a posted entry
  • lock_period closes the books through a date

Tools that only read (11):

  • list_books, list_transactions and reconcile_account
  • Reports: trial_balance, profit_and_loss, balance_sheet, general_ledger and cash_position
  • find_anomalies flags possible duplicate charges or price increases
  • spending_summary and export_book

How to connect it

BalanceMCP's any MCP client guide gives this config. Your key comes from your BalanceMCP Connect page.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "balancemcp": {
      "url": "https://balancemcp.com/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_KEY"
      }
    }
  }
}

The guide notes that some clients use "servers" instead of "mcpServers", or "serverUrl" instead of "url". If your client only supports local servers, it suggests the open-source mcp-remote package as a bridge.

The Connect your AI page has separate guides for Claude, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), VS Code and Zed. For claude.ai, it says to add BalanceMCP as a custom connector and paste the endpoint and your key.

Security notes

BalanceMCP's security page and permissions page are direct about strengths and gaps.

Guardrails it describes:

  • Unbalanced entries are refused by a Postgres trigger, not by a prompt.
  • Journal entries and lines can't be updated or deleted "for every caller." Mistakes are fixed with reversals.
  • Locked periods can't receive postings, and locks can't be moved backward.
  • Write tools that change existing records default to a preview, though the site says, "The preview is a default, not a gate."
  • Every authenticated tool call is logged, with keys, tokens and passwords redacted. The log is append-only by database trigger.
  • Keys are stored as "a cryptographic hash of it, not the key itself."

Gaps it lists:

  • "There is no read-only or scoped key yet." Any key can call all 19 tools.
  • "We have not obtained SOC 2 or any other certification."
  • "We have not had a third-party penetration test performed."
  • There is no approval workflow. A write sent with confirm set to true happens immediately.

Because every key is all-or-nothing, treat a BalanceMCP key like a password. Our guides to excessive permissions and the MCP security center explain why that matters.

Alternatives

  • LedgerMCP, an MCP-native ledger with read-only keys and paid bank feeds (built by eSEOspace).
  • Xero or QuickBooks Online, if you already keep books in a major platform.

Frequently asked questions

Is BalanceMCP free?

Yes. BalanceMCP's site lists a Free plan at $0 "forever" with all 19 tools. A Plus plan at $9 a month is marked "Coming soon" and is not yet for sale.

Does BalanceMCP connect to my bank?

Not yet. The site says automatic bank connections are "still being built," so you import PDF or CSV statements by hand.

Can I give an AI read-only access to BalanceMCP?

Not today. BalanceMCP's security page says there is no read-only or scoped key yet, so any key can post and reverse entries.

Did eSEOspace build BalanceMCP?

No. BalanceMCP is an eSEOspace marketing client. We work on its website and search marketing, not its software.
